Change A Nightster Derby Cover

The Derby cover allows you to personalize your Harley-Davidson Nightster bike.

The Harley-Davidson Nightster motorcycle offers a customizable feature known as a "Derby" cover. This changeable plate mount allows owners to express themselves with various images. The derby cover is a 10-inch circle plate located by the kick starter. The Nightster motorcycle comes bearing a plate with the Harley logo, but changing the Nightster Derby plate is easy.

Instructions

1. Unscrew the five screws that attach the old Derby cover to the motorcycle. Since all replacement covers come with new replacement screws and washers, you can discard the old. Replacing the screws also prevents rust.

2. Alight the new cover with the plate socket. There will a notch on the top of the cover that will fit into a notch in the socket. Rotate it until it slips in, then hold it firmly in place.

3. Place a washer over the top screw hole, then screw in one of the new screws. The plate is now stable enough to let go.

4. Screw in the other four screws, with washers. Once the top screw is attached, the order does not matter.

Improve The Fit Of High Volume Boots

High volume boots are a kind of boot designed for individuals with wide, flat feet. The problem with this kind of boot is that every person's feet are different. Although a person may need some of the high volume features, they may not need all of them. Making small changes to the boot will improve its overall fit and make it work for each individual person. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Make sure you actually need high volume boots. High volume boots are designed for individuals that have a high instep, wide heels, wide toes and a somewhat flat arch. If your feet do not have these features, they will not fit well inside high volume boots. Even if the shoes are slightly too big, however, you can make them fit better with different techniques.

2. Put the boots on with the socks that you normally wear with the boots. Check the fit. Do the boots feel too large or too snug? There are different fitting techniques for each problem. Check to see if your feet feel scrunched against the heel or toe bed and if the level of instep support is comfortable. Make note of any area where you feel discomfort.

3. Adjust the boot to make it larger if it feels too tight in any way. Fill a plastic bag with water and slide it inside the boot. Place the boot outside in freezing weather, or in the freezer wrapped in another plastic bag. Allow the bag to freeze overnight. The next day thaw the ice inside the boot. The process of freezing the bag inside the boot will slightly expand the inside of the boot.

4. Wear slightly thinner socks if the boots feel too tight. Make sure that the issue is not that you need a bigger shoe size. If you have not bought a new pair of boots in several years, it is possible that your foot size has changed and you need to replace the boots with a different size.

5. If the boot feels too big, place a thick insole in the bottom of the boot. A thick insole will take up some of the space inside the boot, making it fit snugly. Add a heel spacer to the back of the boots to push your foot toward the front of the shoe. This will also take up some of the extra space.

6. Wear thick socks if you need a little less space inside the shoe. The thick socks will contour to the shape of your foot and the inside of the boot acting as an insulating buffer layer that will improve the fit of the boot.

Night Rod Specifications

Harley-Davidson introduced the Night Rod for the 2006 model year. The cruiser borrowed elements from previously introduced models in the VRSC family, notably the V-Rod and the Street Rod. According to Motorcycle USA, "In the flesh, the Night Rod is possibly the most attractive VRSC yet." The Night Rod's sinister styling with blacked-out engine, wheels, forks and swing arm sets it apart from the other VRSC models.

Engine Specs

The Harley-Davidson Night Rod has Harley-Davidson's trademarked Revolution engine. The Revolution is a 1250-cubic-centimeter, liquid-cooled, double overhead cam (DOHC), fuel-injected, 60 degree V-twin cylinder engine with four valves per cylinder. It has a bore (cylinder diameter) of 104.9 mm, a stroke (piston traveling distance) of 71.9 mm and a compression ratio of 11.5 to 1. The Night Rod generates 125 horsepower at 8,250 revolutions per minute (rpm) with a maximum torque of 85 foot-lbs. at 7,000 rpm.

Racing Helmet Safety

Whether professional or amateur, racing helmet safety is important in motorsports.

Whether you are a professional or an amateur, racing helmets provide sophisticated, scientifically derived levels of head protection and safety for racers. This holds true for all participants in any kind of racing.

Function

Racing helmets absorb the impact when a racer is in a crash. The outer shell of the helmet might crack to dissipate this impact, but it is the shock-absorbing foam on the inside that does the bulk of the work. Visors on full-face helmets protect a racer's eyes from debris, and in the case of open-wheel auto or motorcycle racing, from wind.

Standards

As of 2010, five racing helmet standards govern helmets sold in the U.S. and Europe. All helmets sold in the U.S. must meet Department of Transportation (DOT) standards but might also meet other criteria, including the rigorous Snell M2010 standard. In Europe (including the U.K.), the ECE 22-05 standard functions similarly to that of the DOT, while the SHARP and ACU five-star rating systems are only recognized in the U.K.

Considerations

While racing helmets may meet Snell standards, they are not required to do so by law. Because of different testing procedures and requirements, a racing helmet that meets one standard might not meet others. This is not necessarily indicative of lesser quality, and you should study these standards to learn what is being tested and how your safety is being ensured by these helmets.

The History Of Winged Wheel Police Motorcycles

The motorcycle has been part of law enforcement's fleet since the cyles' earliest days.

In a departure from the more conventional biker ethos, law enforcement professionals who use motorcycles in the performance of their duties could be said to "Ride to Live, and Live to Keep Us Safe." The winged wheel is a venerable emblem that represents that philosophy; it often is displayed as a patch sewn on an officer's sleeve, or a metal pin worn above the name tag. The crest has become internationally recognized, albeit largely unofficially, as identifying police motorcycle units.

Emblem Defined

The winged-wheel emblem usually is centered on an old-fashioned spoked wheel, with an arrow passing through the center line and a pair of wings lifting from the hub. The experts at Police Motor Units.com define the meanings of the component parts this way: "The wing represents swiftness, the arrow precision and the wheel motion." An alternative take would be that the wheel represents a solo motorcycle, the wing swiftness and speed, and the arrow justice.

Wheel-and-Arrow Insignia

A similar emblem loses the wing and exaggerates the size of the arrow; this version often is used when other agencies or a local motorcycle club have a prior claim to the winged-wheel logo. Quoted on Police Motor Units.com, Lt. Joseph F Tersak Jr. of the Pittsburgh Police Motorcycle Unit states his interpretation of the arrow emblem as "Straight as an arrow, free as a bird."

Display Teams

A number of display teams, drawn from members of police motorcycle units, have adopted the name Winged Wheels; of these, that of the Toronto Police Service is representative. The Toronto Winged Wheels were formed in 1990 as "a precision motorcycle demonstration team comprised of officers from the Enforcement Group of Traffic Services." Its displays include slow-speed turns, high-speed crossovers and impeccably-timed group maneuvers, all intended to highlight the riding skills and ability of each officer to handle his or her 850-pound Harley-Davidson motorcycle. The officers' trust in one another also is a focus -- an attitude that is hoped will encourage civilians to moderate their attitudes to other road users as well as advance riding skills.

Specific Agencies

Some law enforcement agencies have adopted a winged-wheel emblem as the formal designation of their motorcycle unit. Of these, the Huntington Park Police Department in California is representative. From its founding in 1906 until the Long Beach Earthquake of 1933, the majority of the sheriff's deputies and police officers rode motorcycles. When the city was rebuilt after the quake, motorcycle officers were given different uniforms than those using squad cars; the former wore tan, the latter blue. In 1943, patrol officers began wearing electric bolts as an insignia to represent their new "electric cars"; they were equipped with radios. In response, the motorcycle officers adopted the winged-wheel emblem. The same patches are worn today.

Rebuild Front Forks

Modern motorcycle forks absorb shock and dampen rebound to help maintain control of the bike. A large spring runs down the length of the fork tube and into the lower leg. This spring bears on the fork cap and the lower leg to support the weight of the bike at rest and absorb the fork compression due to braking and bumpy road conditions. Hydraulic fluid and an internal damper mechanism help to control the rebound and preserve the contact patch between the front wheel and the road surface. With time, the bushings inside the forks wear and become slack and must be replaced. Once you have removed the forks assembly, you can rebuild it.

Instructions

1. Put on safety glasses, then remove the drain plug and gasket with a socket and ratchet or Allen/Torx driver from the lower leg over the drain pan. Rest the bottom of the lower leg in the pan, and compress the fork repeatedly with hand pressure to pump the old fluid from the fork.

2. Firmly grasp the fork tube with a clean shop rag near the top, and break the torque on the fork cap with a socket and the 1/2-inch drive ratchet. Slowly remove the cap from the tube, and hold strong downward pressure on the cap as it approaches the last few threads, as the cap will be under some pre-load from the fork spring. Allow the spring to unload and expand, pushing the cap off and protruding from the fork. Pull the spring from the fork by hand, then place it in the drain pan to allow it to shed any old fluid.

3. Remove the damper retainer bolt from the bottom of the lower leg with an Allen or Torx driver. Remove the rubber boot from the fork/lower leg joint by hand. Remove the snap-ring from the top of the lower leg, using the snap-ring pliers.

4. Remove the lower leg seal from its recess in the top of the lower leg, using the seal puller. Slide the fork tube from the lower leg. Inspect the fork tube for scoring or galling, and replace it if damaged or bent. Remove the fork tube bushing from the bottom of the fork tube by wedging it open with a flat-tip screwdriver, then sliding it off the fork. Install the new fork tube bushing onto the fork tube.

5. Insert the slide-hammer into the lower leg, and engage the fingers under the shoulder of the lower leg bushing. Slide-hammer the bushing up and out of the lower leg. Tap the new bushing into the lower leg carefully with a hammer. Place the new lower leg seal into its recess, and drive it in with a hammer.

6. Slide the fork tube back into the lower leg. Reinstall the damper retainer bolt in the bottom of the lower leg, and torque it to factory specifications for your model of bike with the torque wrench and an Allen driver. Install the new lower leg snap-ring, using the snap-ring pliers. Snap the rubber boot snugly into position at the top of the lower leg by hand.

7. Clamp the fork tube in the bike's triple-clamp with a ratchet and Allen driver. Replace the lower leg drain plug gasket and plug, using a socket or Allen driver, and torque it to factory specification.

8. Add the appropriate amount of new fork fluid through the top of the fork tube. Install the new O-rings on the cap, then insert the fork spring into the fork and place the cap on top of it. Compress the spring with hand pressure until you can engage the cap in its threads. Thread the cap on fully, and torque it to factory specifications for your model of bike with the 1/2-inch torque wrench and socket.

Make Scrapbooks For Men

A scrapbook can be a wonderful gift to give to a man. Not only is it usually not that expensive to put together, but it is a present that will almost surely be treasured. The scrapbook can be filled with memories that the recipient can enjoy for a lifetime. When you are making a scrapbook for a man, skip the flowers and ribbons, because this present is going to have a masculine feel to it.

Instructions

1. Choose a basic color scrapbook that can go with any theme. Look for a scrapbook in a color such as tan, navy blue or brown that may appeal to men. You can find these in any craft store, where you can also find any scrapbooking papers, stamps, stickers or die-cuts that you want.

2. Create a scrapbook of his childhood sports memories if he participated in athletics as a child. Many of these items the parents hold on to, so you may have to go to them for help. Pick up any ribbons, medals, certificates and pictures that you can and put them together in the scrapbook. Decorate the background of the pages with sports themed scrapbook paper and apply any sports themed die-cuts or stickers that coincide with the sports he played.

3. Create a scrapbook of events and activities he has enjoyed during his adult life. This can include sporting events, trips or any other activities or events that hold special meaning to him. Many of the mementos of these trips are usually shoved in various places instead of being neatly organized. Put them all into a scrapbook for him, decorate the pages accordingly and present it to him as a gift.

4. Create a wedding scrapbook for him. While many couples only have one joint wedding album, it may be nice to make a special one just for him. In addition to pictures and various little mementos, include small notes in certain areas of the scrapbook dictating what made certain moments special or what you loved about a certain picture. You may also want to include a personalized note inside the front cover.

5. Take any pictures that you can find of him and his child(ren) and put them together in a scrapbook. Create captions for the photographs and separate them into sections according to the child's age. Decorate accordingly and, for a finishing touch, write an inscription on the inside front cover.

Make A Motorcycle Baby Shower Cake

A motorcycle baby shower cake is perfect for any biker mother-to-be.

For a Harley-loving mother-to-be, a motorcycle baby shower cake will get some laughter, and maybe even a few tears. With some creamy frosting and some creativity, anyone can make a simple, yet sublime cake for a mother expecting a wild child. You don't need to buy any special equipment to make your cake. Any round, rectangle or square cake pan will do. Use the tools that you have and your creativity to give the future mommy a cake she'll never forget. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Bake Your Cake

1. Find out what kind of cake the mother-to-be prefers. Any cake will do, although a plain white frosting base will be best for decorating. Chocolate, vanilla or even carrot cake with cream cheese frosting will work.

2. Prepare your cake batter and your cake pans. You can make a sheet cake to be decorated. Or, use a sheet cake as a base to cut into the shape of a motorcycle. You could also use round cakes to be layered. Make sure that your pans are thoroughly buttered and floured so that the cake will easily slip out of the pans after baking.

3. Bake your cake. Let it cool on a wire rack in the pan for the amount of time specified. Remove the cake from the pan. The cake must completely cooled before frosting.

For a Motorcycle Shaped Cake

4. Plan out on paper what you want your cake to look like. Draw the motorcycle, using your cake pan to determine the size of your design. Cut out the motorcycle form and use it as a stencil.

5. Freeze your cake, if time allows, for easier cutting. Remove it from the freezer about 10 minutes before cutting.

6. Hold your paper stencil on the cake with one hand and used your other hand to cut around it with a serrated knife. Gently wipe away any crumbs.

Frosting

7. Frost your cake using homemade or canned frosting. Gently spread a generous amount of frosting over the top and sides of the cake using a spatula; smoothing it out with a knife.

8. Put the cake in the refrigerator for 20 minutes and then add a second layer of frosting.

9. Add food coloring to your frosting if you are decorating a motorcycle shaped cake - make the wheels black and the body of the bike the mother-to-be's favorite color. If making a rectangle our round cake, leave the frosting a simple light color like pink, blue or even white.

Decorating

10. Add details to your cut-out motorcycle cake. Use a pastry bag to add handle bars, a seat and wheel spokes.

11. Pipe on orange Harley Davidson flames to your sheet cake, or a fun phrase like "born to be wild." Include the baby's name, if known, and any other message for the mommy.

12. Place some objects on your sheet cake, like a little toy motorcycle and baby blocks.

13. Pipe on a motorcycle in frosting, if you're feeling really confident.

Check The Ignition Coil On A Sportster 1200

The ignition coil on any motorcycle, including the Sportster 1200, is used to boost the battery voltage to fire the spark plug. An ignition coil is a water-tight component, which is sealed and not suitable for making internal repairs. So if it breaks you'll need to replace the entire part. This means that the ignition coil should be checked whenever you are troubleshooting a starting or ignition problem with the bike. To do this you need to use a tool that can detect electrical current.

Instructions

1. Turn the key in the ignition to the "Off' position. Take the key out of the ignition.

2. Pull the spark plug wires off of the spark plugs and then disconnect them from the ignition coil

3. Disconnect the smaller primary wires from the ignition coil with the wrench.

4. Connect the red colored robe for the ohmmeter on the "Primary" wire lead on the ignition coil. This is the wire that is connected to the Points or the CDI. Connect the black colored probe to a metal ground, such as the frame.

5. Read the display on the ohmmeter. The normal reading should be between .5 to 1.5 ohms. If the reading is above this range the ignition coil needs to be replaced.

6. Connect the red colored probe to the secondary wire on the ignition coil. This is the wire that is running to the spark plug caps.

7. Read the display on the ohmmeter. The normal reading should be between 6,000 and 13,000 ohms. If the reading is below this range the ignition coil needs to be replaced.

What Is Appropriate Clothing To Wear In Bogota Colombia

Bogota's climate is just right for enjoying a sunset.

Elevated regions, generally speaking, are really cold or extremely hot, depending on the time of year in question. Yet Bogota, Colombia's largest city, breaks this mold. Extremes are generally less than 20 degrees apart, no matter when you take a sample. Mildness is the rule; well, let's call it a cooler form of "mild."

When tourists come to Bogota, there's little in the climate that a light jacket or sweater can't handle. However, this probably isn't the best place to bring your assortment of shorts.

Geography

Bogota sits at an elevated height 8,600 feet above sea level. The Andes Mountains circle around the city that largely fits inside a basin. The Caribbean Sea is not far north of this capital city either. In fact, this significant body of water lies close enough that it contributes in keeping temperatures from reaching extremes. The city's proximity to the Equator is also important to the region's moderate tendencies.

Expert Insight

A visitor deciding what to wear in Bogota should consider the rainy seasons that come twice per year to the area. According to Joel Zartman, a Bogota resident, "One [rainy season] starts around late March or early April and tapers off in June. It rains at all hours and on some days, nonstop." Zartman says the other rainy period is more "violent." This occurs in October and November. During this time temperatures might get warmer in the day and then the clouds roll in at some point in the afternoon. At times, residents may even experience hail, flooding and torrential rains for up to six to eight hours.

Although the altitude of Bogota helps keep the air cool, the latitude of the city can make the sun powerful--as Zartman points out, "you'll feel it strongly at times."

Appropriate Attire

Sweater-like clothing and accessories are always a good idea.

Based on the climate factors, clothing stores in Bogota sell a lot of sweaters and light jackets. These two general items should form the core necessities you need to include when loading the suitcase. At least three blog commentators familiar with Colombian culture mentioned something that tourism articles also seem to suggest: Wearing shorts just won't cut it.

One good strategy, say residents, is to think like people do in the northern United States during the winter. That is, wear what you would indoors during January, for instance. Either way, Zartman says that Bogota's citizens put on jackets each morning, even during the dry season. He claims every day seems to begin on the chilly side.

Warning

Anyone visiting this city might want to consider some of the U.S. government's warnings for tourists. Although the situation for visitors today is definitely "on the mend," it is generally wise to blend in. So for style, consider looking at pictures of Colombian residents so you can gain some feel for their urban styles. Then try and duplicate some of them prior to going out on the town--it's generally good practice to do this. There is really no up side to standing out while in Bogota.

In Summary

The city itself is situated in a place where snowmobile suits and giant down jackets will never be appropriate. In fact, wear these kinds of items and you will surely stand out, something not recommended by anyone familiar with the "terrain" of this South American capital. The people of Bogota are usually friendly, but they are probably not prone to point out how a visitor should dress. One should look into several factors, including the weather, when deciding what goes in the suitcase or what stays in the closet.

1988 Harley Davidson 883 Hugger Specs

Harley-Davidson motorcycles are commonly known as "hogs."

Since 1904, Harley-Davidson motorcycles have been part of the American culture. Providing riders with loud, beautifully designed road machines, Harley-Davidson is nothing short of a national icon. One of its models, the Sportster, has certainly withstood the test of time. The first version of the Sportster was produced in 1952 and is still seen on the roads today. In the mid 1980s, Harley-Davidson made alterations to the Sportster model, which made the bike leaner, meaner and more powerful. In 1988, one year after the 30-year anniversary of the Sportster, Harley-Davidson released the Sportster 883 Hugger.

Engine & Transmission

Powered by a V2 four-stroke engine that worked at 6,000 RPM, the 1988 Hugger could reach a top speed of 151 mph. Factory-installed overhead valve fuel control (OHV), 4-speed gearbox and air cooling system helped the Hugger stay strong on the roads. A chain transmission came standard with the 1988 model.

Brakes

Bike Exhaust Tips

Exhaust tips can complete the look of a customized motorcycle.

When someone looks at a motorcycle, one of the defining features is the exhaust. Exhaust tips, while they do not enhance a bike's performance, add a custom look to a motorcycle. A stylish tip on the end of an exhaust pipe is the kind of detail that adds personal flair to any bike.

Baron Exhaust Tips

Baron Custom Accessories sells 13 different exhaust tips for motorcycles. Most of those are in a slash cut, including the three Family Jewels Baron brand exhaust tips. The Baron tips are bolt-on style, and are easily installed on any Baron exhaust system. On other exhaust systems, a small hole must be drilled into the exhaust pipe for proper installation. Like most exhaust tips, the Baron brand tips are sold individually, so for dual exhaust pipes you will have to purchase two. The other 10 exhaust tips sold by Baron are from LA Choppers. The LA Choppers tips are installed the same way as the Baron tips. All LA Chopper tips are sold individually, except for the Rinehart tips for the Harley Touring Mode.

Kuryakyn Tips

Kuryakyn produces two different exhaust tips. The Kuryakyn fishtail style takes the traditional fishtail to another level by adding a side pinch in the metal, creating an exaggerated curve. The other style is referred to as the "six gun," which is made to resemble the chamber of a revolver handgun when looked at straight on. The tip is tapered and there are six indentations around the pipe, which resemble individual bullet chambers. Both tips are clamp-on style for universal installation. As of September 2010, tips are $149.99 per pair.

Vince & Hines Slip-ons

While exhaust tips do not affect the performance or sound of a bike, slip-ons will. A slip-on does not attach to the existing exhaust pipe, but replaces it; the exhaust system stays intact while the entire pipe is replaced. Vine & Hines manufacture hundreds of different slip-ons for six different motorcycle and dirt bike manufacturers. Most of the slip-ons manufactured for street bikes, like the Harley Davidson, are equipped with stylized tips. Slip-ons cost a considerable amount more money than tips alone, but they will affect the sound and performance of a bike. Basic slip-ons for a Harley Touring start at about $250 and go up to around $780 (as of September 2010).

Identify Synthetic Motor Oil

Color and consistency can help identify synthetic oils.

Synthetic motor oils are petroleum based and contain additives not found in crude oil products, such as standard motor oil. Synthetic oils mimic the processes of crude oil products while containing less contaminants. Synthetic oils offer a higher performance rating and keep the engine lubricated longer between automobile oil changes when compared with standard motor oil. The simplest method of identifying synthetic motor oil lies within the packaging labels. Identifying unlabeled or used synthetic motor oils relies on its appearance and consistency.

Instructions

1. Read the packaging labels. According to the Fair Packaging and Labeling Act, all products available for purchase are required to be properly identified with usage indications, instructions, warnings and active ingredients.

2. Pour a small amount into the clean, plastic container. The container should be clean of any substances and entirely dry to avoid dangerous contamination. If the oil is used, allow it to completely cool before handling the oil.

3. Check the oil's consistency as you pour it into the container. If unused, synthetic oils are thin with the consistency similar to whole milk; standard motor oils are thicker with a honey-like consistency. Used synthetic motor oils will remain thin; used crude based motor oils double in viscosity.

4. Look at the oil's color. Clean synthetic oils are toffee colored, and used synthetic oils are a darker brown. Both are translucent. Unused crude oils are a translucent brown but deepen to a black color that resembles tar when used.

Raise The Rev Limiter On My Harley Davidson

The "rev limiter" in a Harley is a performance parameter with a stock value of 5,500 rpm.

Although the parameter is commonly called the rev limiter, it is more accurately called the rpm limit, and it is a function of the electronic ignition. A stock Harley-Davidson has a limit of 5,500 revolutions per minute. Usually, on a Big Twin, about the time you hit 60 or 65 miles per hour in second gear, the engine will begin to sputter and miss. Crusty old bikers who remember mechanical points will mutter about "hitting the rev limiter," but there is no rev limiter. You change the rpm limit by installing an electronic ignition with a programmable rpm limit. Crane makes ignitions with rev limits that can be set as high as 9,900 rpm.

Instructions

Remove Old Ignition

1. Remove the seat by loosening the Allen or Phillips screw in the fender tab on the back of the seat with an Allen wrench or a Phillips screwdriver.

2. Disconnect the negative battery terminal from the negative battery post with an open-end wrench.

3. Disconnect the spark plug wires from the coil. Remove the two remaining wires, positive and negative, from the front of the coil with a small open-end wrench.

4. Disconnect the plug -- called the VOES connector -- that attaches the wiring harness of the vacuum operated electrical switch to the front wiring harness.

5. Drill out the two rivets on the "points cover" on the lower right side of the motorcycle with an electric drill. Remove the points cover.

6. Loosen the two flat-head screws inside the points cover. Remove the inner cover and gasket.

7. Disconnect the sensor plate cable plug with needle-nose pliers. Pull the sensor plate cable through the hole at the bottom of the timing cover.

8. Draw a line from the V-notch on the sensor plate to the ignition housing, using a grease pencil.

9. Remove the two sensor plate screws and washers with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the sensor plate.

Install New Ignition

10. Install a Crane Hi-4 ignition or the equivalent in place of the sensor plate. Push the new ignition cable through the hole at the bottom of the timing cover.

11. Align the V-notch on the Crane HI-4 ignition with the grease pencil mark on the ignition housing. Loosely attach the new ignition with the original sensor plate screws and the lock washers included with the ignition.

12. Route the new ignition wiring harness along the frame rails to the coil. Secure the new harness to the frame with cable ties.

13. Connect the black (positive) and white (negative) coil wires from the new ignition wiring harness to the positive and negative terminals on the coil, using a small open-end wrench. Reconnect the negative battery cable to the negative battery post with an open-end wrench.

14. Replace the seat and fasten the seat tab to the rear fender with a Phillips screwdriver or an Allen wrench. Attach the green wire in the new ignition wiring harness to the VOES connector.

15. Set the "mode select" dial on the new ignition to "6." Set the two rpm limiter switches to the desired setting. Set the "advance slope" dial to "6."

16. Set the two rpm selector dials to the desired rpm limit, divided by 100. For example, you would achieve an rpm limit of 5,500 by setting both dials to "5." For an rpm limit of 6,800, you would set the first dial to "6" and the second dial to "8."

Static Timing New Ignition

17.Put the Harley in the top gear. Raise it on a motorcycle jack until the rear wheel is off the ground.

18. Remove the front spark plug with a spark plug socket and a socket wrench. Peer into the spark plug hole.

19. Rotate the rear wheel and the engine until the front cylinder is at the top of its stroke. Do not move the rear wheel.

20. Remove the timing hole plug in the crankcase with a hex socket and socket wrench. Screw a timing view plug into the same hole in the crankcase.

21. Confirm that a double line, which is the top dead center timing mark, is visible in the timing view plug.

22. Turn on the ignition. Confirm that the LED on the new electronic ignition is illuminated.

23. Rotate the new ignition module by hand until the LED goes out. Tighten the sensor plate screws with a flat-head screwdriver.

24. Turn off the ignition. Reinstall the front spark plug.

25. Lower the motorcycle jack and remove. Remove the timing view plug and reinstall the timing hole plug with a hex socket and a socket wrench.

26

Reattach the points cover with the gasket included with the ignition kit. Secure the points cover to the ignition housing with the two self-threading screws included with the ignition, using a screwdriver.

Get Rid Of A Vertical Line On A Computer Monitor

Get Rid of a Vertical Line on a Computer Monitor

Usually, there is not much to notice about your monitor until something goes wrong. That's either a testament to the reliability of monitors across the manufacturer spectrum, or it means monitors get upgraded when computers do, so they never have time to wear out. Either way, when lines start appearing in your display, there is little you can do apart from some troubleshooting to determine if you do in fact have a monitor problem or there is another cause.

Instructions

1. Check the cables. It might be overly simplistic, but if your monitor is connected via a serial cable, one of the pins might be bent or missing. This can cause slight display problems, including a vertical line. If you are using a USB, try another cable and see if the problem persists.

2. Update your video card driver. Some discrete cards have an update feature in the properties window for the device. Right-click on your video card in the programs list, and select "Properties." The update will be a button under the "Drivers" tab if your device is so equipped. If not, visit the manufacturer's website and search for the most current driver for your model number. Updated video drivers could solve the problem.

3. Place a box fan directly behind your computer's intake vent for extra cooling. Sometimes if there are system problems, your components can run too hot. If cooling the computer takes away the line, you know have you an overheating problem, not a monitor problem. You might try cleaning the internals with canned air. Remove the housing, and thoroughly blow any dust, hair or carpet fiber away from the fan and off the mother board. While you're there, you can check to see if there are any obvious loose connections.

4. Connect the monitor to another computer if you have one available. This is probably the most definitive test of your monitor's health. If you have a line when the monitor is connected to a different machine, it's likely time for a new monitor. As frustrating as it sounds, taking apart one of today's monitors in an attempt to repair it is more expensive than buying a replacement.

5. If you don't have another computer available, try shutting down the computer but leave the power on to the monitor. Using the buttons on the monitor bezel (if you have them), call up the settings. If the line appears in the menu just as it did in the video from your computer, then you definitely have a monitor problem. Replacement is probably in order.

What Is A Lien Release

What Is a Lien Release?

A lien is a determination of interest that secures the financial investment of one entity in the property of another. Automobile financing agencies and mortgage brokers hold the majority of liens in the United States. Once the loan is paid, the lender issues a lien release, indicating that they no longer have any financial interest in the item or the property.

Function

A lien release provides the owner or the lender with the assurance that no other parties have a financial stake in the property. If you financed a new car through a lender, after you make the final payment, the lender will review your account and send you a lien release. This document states that you have paid your loan in full. In addition, the lender will send an automobile lien release to the state titling agency and you will receive a new title with the previous lien-holder's name removed.

Time Frame

The lender should release a lien within 30 days of your final payment, but if you don't receive a document to that effect, contact the lender and request one. If you hired a contractor to build a new house, your bank can assist you in obtaining lien releases before making the final payment to the contractor. In this case, the bank will obtain signed releases from all subcontractors before releasing the funds to the contractor and rolling the construction loan into a home mortgage. If you are paying your contractor with your own money, request all lien releases before you make the final payment.

Types

Not all lien releases relate to the purchase of property. A mechanic's lien is a recorded document that binds the title of real estate and, until the lien is released, the owner may not sell the property with a clear title. A mechanic's lien may quietly cloud a title for years, unknown to the property owner. If a contractor, subcontractor or any other person provides a service on a property and does not receive payment, the person may file a mechanic's lien against the property. A Quiet Title lawsuit, brought by the seller, may release the lien, or the owner may pay the debt and obtain a release (see Resources below).

Identification

State titling agencies and county Register of Deeds offices identify and enforce liens against vehicles and real estate, respectively. However, liens may also come into play during the commission of a contract between two or more parties. If you sell a tractor to your neighbor, on contract, in return for payments and your neighbor defaults, your signed contract serves as a lien, allowing you to file a lawsuit and receive a court judgment for the amount due or the return of the tractor. Release a personal lien by issuing a receipt to the purchaser, stating that the amount owed is paid in full.

Prevention/Solution

Use a general lien release form, which you can get from an attorney or online (see Resources below), when you need to ensure that a former creditor has relinquished all interest in your property. This is an important process when you sell a vehicle for which you still owe money. Contact the financing company and ask how they would like you to proceed with the sale. If the lender is located in another state, you may often use a local bank to oversee the exchange of the money and the payment of your existing loan.

Find A Crate Motorcycle For Sale

Restore an antique using a crate motorcycle.

If you enjoy comprehensive projects or you're short on funds, and you aren't in a hurry to ride a motorcycle, building a bike can be a fun and rewarding project. A crate motorcycle, or "basket case," is a good way to start. First step? Find the crate motorcycle. This article assumes you have already chosen the type of motorcycle you want to build.

Instructions

Network

1. Let everyone you know that you are looking for a crate motorcycle. The woman you work with might have a brother with a best friend whose wife has been complaining about that pile of junk in the garage. Nobody ever thought it was worth talking about--until you mentioned you wanted to pay them for it.

2. Stop by local motorcycle shops and talk to the folks in the parts and service departments, even if you're looking for a different brand. People like to talk about their motorcycle projects to other motorcycle people. Basket case owners might be talking to friends at the shop with the hope that someone might wander in looking for that exact project.

3. Find forums on the Internet. Use a search engine to find forums on topics such as antique Harley-Davidsons, Vincent Black Shadows, classic imported motorcycles, etc. Most forums have a "Buy and Sell" section. These forums will also come in very handy when you're looking for additional parts and technical information.

Internet Research

4. Start a general search on the Internet. Search local classifieds or start throwing terms into your search engine.

5. Go to eBay. Be sure to search as many terms as possible, with as many different spellings as you can dream up. If you find something similar, message the seller and let him know what you're looking for. He might have a friend who has a friend...

6. Go to Craigslist. Search as far out as you're willing to travel. People sell on Craigslist rather than eBay because they don't want to deal with a "sight unseen" sale or with shipping. Be ready to take a ride if you think you've found the perfect crate motorcycle.

7. Join the forums. Don't limit the number of forums you want to join. People hate it when you show up only to sell. Start flashing cash around, in the form of "want to buy" threads, and they'll be happy to have you on their site. Bookmark them all under one category, and visit regularly. You might end up meeting future riding buddies in addition to finding spare parts and tech tips.

Purchasing

8. Buyer beware! A crate motorcycle is in a crate because someone took it apart for some reason. Don't expect a complete motorcycle, but do have a general idea of what you'll need. If you aren't a mechanic, see if you have one who can tag along. Brush up on what to look out for in your choice of motorcycle in the way of cracked engine cases or other major defects.

9. Bring cash. Don't offer to write a check. Nobody wants to take a check. It's one thing to take a personal check for a $30 sofa. It's another thing entirely when you're talking about high-dollar items, like a basket case. You'll also have more negotiation power with a wad of bills.

10. Bring the pickup. Even if you could fit it all in your SUV, remember, this is a motorcycle in pieces. There will be oil and grease. You want your spouse to support you in the project that will soon become her competition for affection. Don't start out on the wrong foot by trashing the family vehicle.

Install An Oem Door Lock On A Camry

A damaged or failed door lock can be a security hazard, letting anyone enter the vehicle by pulling the handle. It can also be inconvenient because a stuck door might prohibit the driver from entering through the driver's door. Most novice mechanics can install an OEM door lock on a Toyota Camry within a hour, even if they don't have any previous automotive repair experience. No special tools are needed for the job.

Instructions

1. Place a standard screwdriver behind the side view mirror trim plate. Pry the trim plate away from the door trim panel to separate it from the panel.

2. Place a standard screwdriver under the power window switch. Pry the power window switch away from the door trim panel and unplug the electrical connection from the back of the switch. On some models, a retaining screw under the power window switch needs to be removed with a Phillips screwdriver.

3. Place a standard screwdriver behind the small trim plate behind the inside door latch. Pry the small cover away to reveal a Phillips screwdriver that can be removed with a Phillips screwdriver. Place a standard screwdriver behind the door latch trim and pry it away from the door trim panel.

4. Remove the retaining screws on the front of the door trim panel. Place a standard screwdriver behind the door trim panel. Pry the panel away from the door to separate the panel from the door.

5. Remove the bolts on the power window control unit on models equipped with the unit, which is located on the door. Unscrew the two bolts with a socket wrench and pull the power window switch from the door.

6. Remove the door bracket on models with a bracket across the front of the door. Unscrew the mounting bolts with a socket wrench and pull the bracket from the door.

7. Peel back the plastic water shield away from the inner door.

8. Depress the clips that attach the door lock control rod to the door lock with a standard screwdriver. Separate the control rod from the door lock.

9. Unscrew the Torx screw on the left end of the door with a Torx screwdriver to loosen the door lock. Pull the door lock (and door handle on certain models) from the outside of the door. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the lock cylinder retaining screws on models that have the cylinder attached to the handle. Install the replacement door lock on the handle.

10. Set the door lock cylinder (and attached handle on certain models) into the recessed hole on the outside of the door. Tighten the Torx screw on the left end of the door with a Torx screwdriver.

11. Attach the control rod to the door lock, placing the clips over the rod lock to hold it in place.

12. Stick the plastic water shield to the inside of the door.

13. Replace the door bracket on models with a bracket across the front of the door. Place the bracket across the door and install the mounting bolts with a socket wrench.

14. Place the power window control unit against the door and install the mounting bolts with a socket wrench.

15. Place the door trim panel against the door. Push the door trim panel against the door to engage the retaining clips on the rear of the trim panel.

16. Install the retaining screws on the front of the door trim panel with a Phillips screwdriver.

17.Place the door latch trim against the door panel and install the retaining screw with a Phillips screwdriver. Push the small trim plate over the retaining screw behind the door latch trim.

18. Plug in the electrical connection to the back of the power window switch. On certain models, install the retaining screw with a Phillips screwdriver. Set the power window switch into the recessed hole in the door panel.

19. Push the side view mirror trim plate against the door panel to engage the retaining clips on the rear of the trim plate.

What Is Harley Active Exhaust Control

Developed by Harley-Davidson Motor Co. to reduce sound and noise emissions produced by their line of motorcycles, the Active Intake Control (AIC) system is an electronically controlled servo that opens and closes a valve in the intake chamber according to preset engine speeds. The Active Intake Control works together with the Active Exhaust Control system.

Emissions Requirements

Working in accordance to meet higher emissions standards introduced by the European Commission and the Association des Constructeurs Europeens de Motocycles (ACEM) in 2008, Harley-Davidson began to implement the Active Intake Control and the Active Exhaust Control systems in their international motorcycle models.

Function

The purpose of the Active Intake System (AIS) is to lower the amount of sound, or noise, emitted by the motorcycle by regulating the intake of air into the motor. The AIS is composed of a valve and a servo that is controlled by the motorcycle's Electronic Control Module (ECM).

Operation

At idle, the AIS valve is closed, restricting the amount of air allowed into the motor to a minimum and lowering the sound levels of the exhaust. As the engine speed increases, the ECM sends a signal to the servo, which opens the valve and allows more air into the motor to meet the required air/fuel ratio for higher performance demands.

Benefits

Harley-Davidson's motorcycles have benefited from the introduction of the AIC system, in conjunction with the Active Exhaust Control system, by reducing the amount of audible and gaseous emissions to create a more environmentally sound source of transportation.

Bypassing the AIC

Although most motorcyclists may not notice the presence of the Active Intake Control, many performance-minded riders have noted that the restrictive intake may rob the motor of power. To combat this, the AIC may be bypassed with aftermarket "emulators." Doing so, however, will void the manufacturer's warranty and is intended only for off-road riding.

Types Of Rice & Oils Used In Rice Jewelry

Write on grains of rice to make personalized jewelry.

Rice jewelry is an ancient art form that some say originated in Turkey, while others say India. Rice writing is an art form rooted in micrography. Micrography is the Jewish art form of drawing pictures made up of small words and has been done for more than a thousand years. The oils and rice used are mainly the preference of the artist, though some grains of rice are easier to scribe and some oils don't age as well as others.

Rice

Writing on rice requires a steady hand and a good writing surface. Jasmine rice and basmati rice tend to be a longer than standard long-grain rice. Long-grain white rice works if you cannot find the other two. The ideal canvas is a flat, long surface.

Oils

The best oil for rice-writing is mineral oil. Baby oil is mineral oil with fragrance. They both work well and preserve the rice for years.

Colored Oils

Some rice jewelry suppliers sell colored oils. You can make this yourself with mineral oil and food coloring. Be aware that the colored oils may eventually dye the rice.

Compare Directv To Comcast

Comcast and DirecTV compete for customers on price and other areas.

Compare DirecTV to Comcast by weighing factors such as cost, programming, picture quality and reliability. Sorting through the data can be daunting, but a systematic approach to selecting a television service provider will ensure you make a choice that fits you and your family. An honest analysis of programs and viewing habits will help lead you to the right results.

Instructions

1. Assess your household's viewing habits. Determine what stations and programs you watch most often. Consider the number of televisions in your house as well since additional receivers and digital video recorders can bring added fees.

2. Review the websites for Comcast and DirecTV and consider the value of special deals for new subscribers. You'll find the basic prices and learn about fees for installation and equipment. Most cable or satellite providers waive these fees, but when you make your comparison this is an important factor.

3. Use your needs list to determine if each of the providers have the channels you watch most and how expensive it will be to include all the channels you desire. Comcast and DirecTV have different price points for certain channels. DirecTV boasts of offering 160 channels and the most high-definition channels. The company also offers the "NFL Sunday Ticket," an exclusive pro football package. Comcast has a smaller HD lineup, but has exclusive channels for local sports, including Philadelphia teams. Comcast claims to have better HD picture quality than DirecTV.

4. Telephone each company, armed with all the research you have done. Use this information to negotiate the best deal. Sometimes the telephone sales divisions for DirecTV and Comcast offer discounts not listed on the Internet. The operators may also have options to upgrade channel lineups to include the channels that you watch most.

5. Arrange installation. DirecTV requires a satellite dish and a southwest exposure to receive the signal. Cable must to be wired throughout the house and can be difficult to set up as well. Note that while cable does have outages from time to time DirecTV may have difficulty with reception in heavy rain. Consider the environment and conditions in your area when making your choice.

Service My Vrod

Harley Davidson engines require seasonal service.

The Harley Davidson V-Rod requires periodic service, just like any other motorcycle. This includes changing the oil, inspecting the hydraulic brake fluid, checking the coolant, and inspecting the front and rear brakes for excessive wear. When changing the engine oil, you should consider changing the air filter as part of the same routine; you will find that the service interval for the two items is the same.

Instructions

1. Jack up the motorcycle with a motorcycle jack, being careful to evenly balance the V-Rod on the jack arms.

2. Position an oil-drain pan underneath the oil-drain plug at the bottom of the crankcase, then use an adjustable wrench to remove the plug.

3. Unbolt the air cleaner assembly from the side of the motorcycle while the engine oil is draining. Beneath this assembly, you will find the engine air filter. Replace this filter with a new filter and throw out the old one.

4. Remove the oil filter from the V-Rod and drain any remaining oil from it or the oil lines into the oil-drain pan. While this is dripping, use a flashlight to inspect the front and rear brake pads.

5. Shine the beam from the flashlight just between the brake pad and the brake disc. You will see a small metal clip. If this metal clip touches the brake disc, you need to replace the brake pads. If you have never accomplished this work before, take it to an authorized Harley Davidson service department to avoid the risk of incorrectly aligning the brake pads onto the calipers and potentially damaging the brake discs.

6. Look at the window in the brake master cylinder. The fluid level should be visible through the window. If it is not, use a screwdriver to loosen the top of the housing, add enough Harley Davidson brand brake fluid to increase the fluid level until it is visible through the window, and then reinstall the cover onto the master cylinder.

7. Check the engine coolant while the engine is cool by opening the radiator cap. The coolant should have a bright, vibrant color to it. If you see spots of rust or dirt inside the radiator cap, drain and flush the radiator, then refill the radiator with Harley Davidson brand engine coolant.

8. Screw the replacement oil filter onto the engine, followed by the oil drain plug. When this is completed, add Harley Davidson engine oil to the oil fill on the side of the engine. The Harley Davidson V-Rod uses five quarts of motor oil. Do not overfill it. When this is complete, close the plug in the oil fill, lower the engine off of the jack, then start the motorcycle. Let it run until it has warmed up to cycle the fresh oil through the engine.

Keep The Floor Boards From Scraping On A Harley Fat Boy

Riding a motorcycle does not come naturally; riding skills are learned and developed through practice. While a Harley-Davidson Fat Boy is a motorcycle with low ground clearance, as most Harleys are, learning to lean the bike without scraping the floorboards is possible. It's better to do some exercises at low speeds in a controlled area, such as a parking lot, to determine the Fat Boy's lean angle limit, rather than find out when you're barreling into a curve at high speed.

Instructions

General Lean Angle Practice Techniques

1. Find a controlled, off-road practice space. Cut the tennis balls in half. Place each half onto the pavement of a parking lot -- fairly wide apart -- to form a large circle of 30 to 40 feet in diameter.

2. Ride the motorcycle in the friction zone with pressure on the rear brake. Keep your head and eyes up. Do not look at the ground or the tennis balls, or you will drop the bike. Do not touch the front brake, or you will drop the bike. Ride around the circle in both the left and right directions. Keep your speed at between 3 to 5 miles per hour. Do not pull the clutch in all the way, or you will drop the bike.

3. Reduce the size of the tennis ball circle in increments until you can safely and comfortably navigate through a 20-foot circle. If you scrape the floorboards, don't panic; it means you have reached the limit of your lean angle. Keep your speed at between 3 to 5 miles per hour throughout the exercise. Master the 20-foot circle, repeating until it is second nature.

4. Create a large figure eight shape with the tennis balls. Weave through the figure eight with the clutch out and your foot off the rear brake, keeping the speed just over 15 miles per hour. Lean the bike over as far as you can throughout the maneuver. Repeat until you have mastered the figure eight and have comfortably leaned the bike over as far as possible.

Harley Fuel System Options

The Harley Davidson is an American symbol of the open road.

Harley Davidson motorcycles are manufactured in a wide range of body styles to suit a variety of performance and riding style needs. Further upgrading the motorcycle's mechanical components, in particular the fuel system, allows the rider to have greater acceleration and power with increased fuel economy over the life of the bike. New exhaust pipes, air filters and out-board diagnostic systems allow the rider to effectively monitor the performance of his vehicle while ensuring that his ride has the latest equipment.

Fuel Injection Upgrades

Harley motorcycles have software and diagnostic upgrade options available for the entire fuel injection system. These improvements, like the Daytona Twin Tec Auto-Tune, allow the rider to fully customize his bike's air to fuel mixture via improved software connectivity, increasing fuel economy and engine performance. Daytona's diagnostic system also allows for fully programmable cold-start, idle air control and rpms which permits the Harley to fit aftermarket engine upgrades to allow for higher airflow.

Air Cleaners

Upgrading the factory installed air cleaner is an important step in improving fuel system quality for the Harley Davidson. A larger air filter will improve acceleration and boost, which can be effectively managed through a newly upgraded fuel injection system. K & N Custom Air Cleaners create air filters specifically designed for Harley Davidson motorcycles that improve performance and protect against debris intake that can clog a fuel system and retard performance.

Exhaust Improvements

The exhaust is the means by which spent fuel gas is expelled from the Harley. Slip-on exhaust systems provide a slight aesthetic improvement over factory installed components and provide a boost in fuel economy and power. According to harley-performance.com, the HD Screamin' Eagle II is one such popular exhaust option that provides the rider with a professional racing level of performance and exhaust management.

Remove The Inner Primary Cover From A Harley

Remove the Inner Primary Cover From a Harley

There are few reasons to remove the inner primary cover on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. However, the most common are: to install a wide drive belt and offset pulley, to remove the inner primary cover bearing or to replace both primary covers with flashier chrome ones. Removing the inner primary cover is an advanced Harley project. Do not try this at home unless you are completely confident that you can take your motorcycle apart and put it back together again.

Instructions

1. Raise your motorcycle completely off the ground with a motorcycle jack and ensure that the motorcycle is stable.

2. Locate the primary fluid drain plug in the lower bottom of the outer primary cover. Put a drain pan under the plug, remove the plug with an Allen wrench and drain the primary fluid.

3. Remove the gear shift lever and left foot rest with a socket or box wrench. Remove all five outer primary cover screws with a hex wrench.

4. Use a clutch spring compressor to compress the clutch springs. Remove the nuts on the clutch studs with a wrench. Remove the clutch pressure plate, springs and releasing disc. Inspect the friction plates for dark streaks, which usually indicate warped clutch plates. Remove the friction plates and clutch plates.

5. Locate the chain tensioner and remove the tensioner retaining bolt with a wrench. Remove the chain tensioner by hand. Locate the oiler pipe. Some Harleys do not have an oiler pipe. If yours does, remove it.

6. Use a socket extension and socket to brace the engine and clutch sprockets.

7. Remove the compensator nut with a breaker bar and socket. It may be helpful to extend the leverage of the breaker bar with a 3-foot length of steel pipe. Remove the starter solenoid and motor. In some Harleys, you may have to remove the exhaust pipes as well.

8. Locate and remove the clutch hub nut with a wrench. Remove the primary chain, compensator, front sprocket and clutch hub. Remove any oil lines from the rear primary and remove any remaining oil lines with a pair of pliers and shop rags. The oil lines will be covered in motor oil.

9. Use a wrench to remove the grounding line attached to one of the two retaining bolts near the gear box. Use a wrench to remove the six inner primary retaining bolts on both side of the inner primary.

10. Remove the inner primary. Sometimes the primary may be removed after tapping it gently with a rubber mallet. It is accepted shop practice to use a 2-by-4 and a hammer to remove the inner primary cover if necessary.

Convert A Motorcycle Chain Drive To A Belt Drive

Convert a Motorcycle Chain Drive to a Belt Drive

Belt drives are popular alternatives to chain drives on motorcycles. Belt drives are quieter and require less maintenance. Unlike chain drives, the belt does not require oil, so you never get oil-sling problems. The belt will outlast the chain, providing that the pulleys are properly aligned and the belt tension is correct. Small rocks pose the main threat to belts. A rock can become trapped between the belt and the rear pulley. The rock will then punch a hole through the belt as the rear pulley rotates. A hole in the center of the belt will not break the belt, but a hole in either edge will start a tear that will part easily under the strain of riding.

Instructions

1. Lift the bike with the bike lift. Place the lift towards the rear of the frame so that the rear tire is lifted off the ground.

2. Remove the rear axle nut and release the rear axle adjusters to de-tension the chain. Remove the chain from the rear sprocket. Remove the rear wheel and the wheel spacers.

3. Remove the two shock mount nuts and pull the shock off the chain side of the bike (softails disregard). Remove and replace the rear wheel sprocket with the rear wheel pulley.

4. Remove the upper and lower chain guard from the swing arm. Remove the transmission drive sprocket cover. Remove the chain and the transmission drive sprocket and replace it with the drive pulley.

5. Thread the belt onto the bike and place it on the transmission drive pulley. Reinstall the drive pulley cover. Ensure that there is clearance inside the cover and the pulley does not hit the cover.

6. Reinstall the rear wheel, spacers and axle. Place the belt onto the rear pulley. Tighten up the adjusters to tension the belt. Check rear axle alignment. Adjust the rear wheel alignment by varying the thickness of the rear wheel spacers.

7. Check belt tension as per the belt manufacturer's instructions. Install and torque the rear axle nut to factory specifications.

8. Reinstall the upper and lower chain guards. Ensure that there is clearance for the belt and that the belt does not touch the guards. Switch to belt guards that are built to accommodate the width of the belt if the old chain guards interfere with the belt.

What Happens To Credit Card Debt When One Dies

Credit cards can follow us to the grave.

When a person dies with outstanding credit accounts, what happens afterward is a complicated answer. Several factors dictate who, if anyone, will be responsible for the remaining debt. State law and the credit card company policies all influence what will happen to the person's debt after they have died.

Simple Solution

The simplest solution is when the debt is yours and yours alone. When you die, no one else can be held accountable for that debt, according to CreditCards.com. Your estate will be responsible for paying the debt. After your death, if your estate is probated, a legal process for settling the estate of a deceased person, your executors and lawyers will examine the remaining debt and decide in which order the bills will have to be paid. The remaining amount of the estate will be divided up among the named heirs in the will, or according to state law if there is no will.

Misconceptions

Your spouse, children or other relatives cannot be held responsible for your debt after your death unless the account is shared. This means you must have signed the credit application and be a joint person on the account. If your estate is declared insolvent, meaning there are not sufficient assets to cover the debts, the credit card company has no choice but to write off the debt. Also, the Credit Card Act of 2009 requires that executors of estates be informed of all debts quickly. The credit card companies are required to stop all interest charges and penalties during the time that the estate is being settled. Any credit card company that tries to reclaim costs through interest and penalty charges during this time is breaking the law.

Exceptions

The only exceptions to the rule are states that employ community of property law, according to CreditCards.com. Generally, assets are considered joint property between spouses. However, under community of property, debts can also be considered joint property as well. Currently, 10 states operate under community of property--Alaska, Arizona, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, Texas, Washington and Wisconsin. If your spouse had a single account and you reside in one of these states, you could possibly be held accountable for his debt. However, not all community of property states take the same view of debts. If you find you are in this situation, consult an estate lawyer.

Considerations

Should you start getting calls or threats from collection agencies in relation to a deceased person's debt, CreditCards.com recommends determining if the debt is valid. Don't just assume it is because the credit card company or collection agency claims it is. Find out if you are in any way liable for the debt. Again, this will depend on the laws of your state if the debt was held by your spouse. Finally, learn to handle collection calls. Remain calm and do not give them any of your own banking details. Never give them your Social Security number. Ask for proof of the debt and who is trying to collect it.

Limitations

Spouses, business partners and co-signers can sometimes be made responsible for the deceased's credit card debt depending on the laws of the state. However, authorized users cannot be held liable, according to CreditCards.com. Even if you are a second cardholder with charging privileges, you cannot be held liable for the remaining debt. Only joint account holders who have signed the credit application can be held responsible for the remaining balance.
