Register A Salvage Title Vehicle

A salvage vehicle title is a title with a notation indicating that the vehicle has been damaged beyond a certain percentage of its pre-damage value, typically more than 50 percent (depending on the jurisdiction). Salvage title vehicles are cheaper than clean title vehicles, but are difficult to insure and generally cannot be registered or driven on public roads without "clean" title. However, a buyer who rebuilds a damaged salvage title vehicle can have clean title restored.

Instructions

1. Obtain the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and run an online vehicle history report to confirm its salvage title status. Your car's VIN contains 17 characters (unless it is from the early 1980s or older), and its location on your car varies by make and model. It may be found on the dashboard, the door frame, the steering wheel, the steering column, the left-hand inner wheel arch, the firewall, the radiator support bracket, or on the engine.

2. Inspect the vehicle for damage and calculate the cost of repairs. If the cost of repairs exceeds the discount you are being offered due to its salvage title status, it is probably not worth buying.

3. Repair the vehicle. Keep all receipts for parts you buy to prove that you own them.

4. Check your state's Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) website for an application for salvage vehicle inspection. Most states require this to have the vehicle officially inspected. Download and print the form, and complete it.

5. Take the application for salvage vehicle inspection, bills of sale or titles for any parts you purchased, and your rebuilt vehicle to an authorized salvage inspector (a list should be provided on the DMV website). The inspector will examine your car and issue an inspection report.

6. Bring your vehicle's title, the application for salvage vehicle title, and the inspection report to the state office that issues rebuilt titles (the address of this office should be available on your state's DMV website). You will have to fill out an application for rebuilt title. The office will issue a rebuilt title and register your vehicle for a nominal fee.

Harleydavidson Tours Across The Usa

Touring on a Hog can magnify the freedom of the open road.

Harley-Davidson motorcycle owners can sign up for package tours or strike out on the road with a friend or two. But if you have always wanted to join a tour on a Hog and don't have your own bike, you can go on an organized trip with a motorcycle supplied by the tour company. Self-guided tours can take you almost anywhere, but tour companies allow you to ride the more popular routes and make new friends along the way.

Sturgis Rally

The Sturgis Rally attracts up to half a million Hog riders every year. This 1,600-mile tour begins in Denver, Colorado, takes you through Estes Park, into Cheyenne, Wyoming, and then to Sturgis, South Dakota. While there you can explore the Black Hills, Spearfish Canyon, wander the Old West streets of Deadwood and spend time gazing at Mount Rushmore. Next, you loop back into Wyoming, passing Devil's Tower and follow the footsteps of General Custer into Casper, where the Oregon and Mormon trails meet. From there, you continue south to Steamboat Springs, Colorado, before returning to Denver.

Highway 1 Loop Tour

Starting in Los Angeles, you ride north through Malibu and stop for lunch in Solvang before continuing on to Morro Bay. North from there you pass through Monterey, Half Moon Bay and San Francisco. Passing through Bodega Bay into Mendocino, the trail deviates inland to the Drive Through Tree in Leggett and on to Laytonville, then southeast, past Clear Lake and through Mendocino National Forest into Sacramento. Continuing east, you stop at South Lake Tahoe and then descend east out of the Sierras, passing through Carson City and Virginia City to spend the night in Reno, Nevada. South through Tonopah and Indian Springs, you wind up in Las Vegas. Next, your trail leads southwest into Barstow, following Route 66 back into Los Angeles and ultimately to Santa Monica.

Route 66

Nostalgic Route 66 takes you 2,700 miles from Chicago to Los Angeles. Following the old Pontiac Trail through Springfield, Illinois, proceed south across the Mississippi River to Meramec Caverns, a hideout of Jessie James' gang, and to Rolla, Missouri. Continue southwest through Tulsa, Oklahoma, then on through El Reno, Bridgeport and into Weatherford. Next you pass into the Texas Panhandle and into Amarillo, then on through Adrian, Texas --- the halfway point of Route 66 --- and over the southern Rocky Mountains into Santa Fe, New Mexico, for a two night stay. Over the next week, you will pass through Taos, Gallup and Albuquerque, then cross into Arizona seeing the Painted Desert, the Petrified Forest, Winslow and the Grand Canyon. Passing into California, the route leads through Needles, the Mojave Desert, Barstow and the San Gabriel Mountains before reaching Victorville. From there, you have only a couple hours' ride to the Santa Monica Pier and the end of your journey.

Old West Discovery Tour

This 2,625-mile ride starts in Los Angeles, passes through Palm Springs and into Laughlin, Nevada, passing through Joshua Tree National Park along the way. Next stop is the Grand Canyon, then on through Monument Valley with a swing northeast through Bryce Canyon. Turning west, you pass through Zion National Park on the way to Las Vegas, then ride northwest and cross into California to visit Mammoth Lakes. From there, it is a short and lovely ride across the Sierras into Yosemite, then on to San Francisco. Heading south, you will pass through Monterey on the way to Carmel, then continue south through Pismo Beach and return to Los Angeles.

Replace A Throw Out Bearing In A Harley Transmission

The throw out bearing -- otherwise known as the pushrod bearing -- is located just inside the transmission clutch release cover on the lower right-hand side of your Harley-Davidson. Replacement is rarely necessary, as it does not wear easily. If, however, you decide your throw out bearing does require replacement, it is accessible with simple hand tools.

Instructions

1. Remove the magnetic drain plug with a wrench. The drain plug is underneath the outer primary chain case on the left side of the motorcycle. Drain the fluid into a drain pan.

2. Remove the six screws on the clutch release cover with an Allen wrench. Remove the clutch release cover. Discard the gasket located just inside the clutch release cover.

3. Loosen the clutch cable adjuster with a wrench to allow slack in the clutch cable.

4. Remove the retaining clip of the pushrod assembly with a pick tool. This will also release the two thrust washers located just behind the retaining clip.

5. Remove the throw out bearing. Insert a new one into the same slot.

6. Reinstall the two thrust washers and the retaining clip you previously removed.

7. Tighten the clutch cable adjuster with a wrench.

8. Replace the clutch release cover gasket and reinstall the cover by inserting and tightening the six screws previously removed.

Properly Dispose Of A Satellite Dish

There are certain items, such as satellite dishes, that you cannot simply throw away. Like many other electronics, a dish contains various metals and toxins that can pollute a landfill. Sometimes a previous owner of a house or apartment will leave a satellite dish attached, or maybe you just canceled your satellite service. If you want to dispose of a dish, you must do it properly to avoid being fined. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. If the dish came with a television service, give it back to the company. In some cases, regardless of the condition of the dish, they are going to want it back, and they could charge you if you don't return it to them. In other cases, the satellite company won't want the dish back and will leave the disposal up to you.

2. Donate your dish to a satellite dish recycling center. Some nonprofits will even uninstall and remove the dish for you. There are several uses for donated satellite dishes, such as in solar paneling projects and making wi-fi boosters.

3. Sell your dish on eBay. Some large used dishes can be sold for $100 or more.

4. Post information about your satellite dish on SatelliteGuys.us, a website for satellite enthusiasts, and Craigslist.org. Someone might be happy to take the dish off of your hands and maybe even pay you.

Deal With Motorcycle Helmet Hair

Deal With Motorcycle Helmet Hair

Traveling on a motorcycle gives you a feeling of freedom, is very relaxing and is good for the environment since motorcycles use less fuel than cars. The bad thing about the sport of motorcycling is the dreaded helmet hair. Getting off your bike ready to see the sights or catch a meal at a nice restaurant is embarrassing when your hair is flat, sweaty and glued to your scalp. There are ways to combat helmet hair with great effect, though.

Instructions

1. Choose a short hairstyle if you love to ride motorcycles. This is the easiest way to prevent helmet hair. Once you dismount you can run a brush through your hair, spritz it with water and scrunch it, or use a hair gel to create a messy, spiky look. These tips are great for male riders too.

2. Select hair styles that are straight and sleek. This type of hairstyle requires little care and is becoming on many women.

3. Braid your hair. You can do a simple, long braid down your back or, for a more elegant look, french braid your hair. Now when you remove your helmet, your hair is already done.

4. Purchase an item called the leather hair glove. This leather pouch snaps in place around a long pony tail or braid. When you get to your destination, just unsnap it and your hair will fall out tangle free with every strand in place.

5. Take along a hair clip. When you arrive at the event or place you will be staying, just pull your hair back as if you were preparing a ponytail and twist it a few times. Secure the hair to the back of your head with the clip and you are ready to party.

6. Use a ponytail holder and pull your hair back into a ponytail. You can even use a couple or several depending on how long your hair is. Place a ponytail holder every couple of inches to keep the strands in place and tangle-free.

7. Sprinkle a bit of baby powder on your scalp to use as a dry shampoo. Rub it into your scalp and then brush it out.

Install Yamaha Bolt On Saddlebags On A 2007 Yamaha Road Star

Saddlebags seem to be the norm, not the exception, on Yamahas.

Yamaha introduced the Road Star to compete for cruiser market share with Harley-Davidson. Harley discovered long ago that the biggest profits in the business were in accessories, after sales. Saddlebags are so basic to motorcycling that it might be reasonable to make them standard equipment on most cruisers, yet they are not standard on most Harleys. Yamaha modeled their after-sale marketing on Harley's, so people who buy a Road Stars also have to buy bags. Road Star owners can get the same style bags that Harley owners can. The bags are not interchangeable between the two brands, but the installation is basically the same between Road Stars and Harley Softails.

Instructions

1. Identify the fender trim on both sides of your rear fender. Put your hand inside the rear fender and feel for rear fender trim nuts. Not all Road Stars have nuts.

2. Lay out and inspect all the parts and hardware that came with your saddlebags. Read the instructions. Some saddlebags come with frames that you bolt to the fenders. You bolt the bags to these frames. Some bags come with brackets that replace the fender trim. Other bags bolt directly to the rear fender.

3. Working on one side at a time, unbolt the rear fender trim with a ratchet or box wrench and remove it. If the trim is attached with both bolts and nuts, use a box wrench to immobilize the nut inside the fender. Most Road Stars use hex-head bolts to attach the fender trim, so use a hex wrench to remove this bolt. Replace the fender trim with any frames or brackets included with the saddlebags. All motorcycles vibrate, so be sure to use maximum strength thread locker on all of the bolts.

4. Bolt, clip or fasten the saddlebag to the fender, frame or mounting bracket. Repeat on the other side.

Use A Trimble Tsc2 With A Lasercraft Contour Xlr

Construction and surveying professionals need precise instruments for measuring and recording distances, especially for structural dimensions. However, some distances may be too dangerous or impractical to reach, such as the top of an electrical pole. The Lasercraft Contour XLR instrument, shaped similar to a hand gun, emits a laser beam when a trigger is depressed. The laser beam bounces off an object and produces a distance value on the instrument's display. You can connect a Trimble TSC2 data controller to the Lasercraft Contour XLR, so that the distance values are stored within the TSC2 for future analysis.

Instructions

1. Attach a RS232 serial cable to the Contour XLR's serial connector. The serial connection is a 9-pin configuration, typically on the side of the instrument. There may be a protective cover across the connector. If so, remove the cover.

2. Connect the other RS232 serial cable end to the TSC2. The TSC2 has multiple ports on its bottom end. Locate the 9-pin RS232 connector, and plug the cable securely into the TSC2's port.

3. Press the "Menu" key on the Contour XLR. Set the baud rate to match the TSC2's baud rate. The typical baud rate value is 19200. However, consult the TSC2 owner's manual for any current software or hardware changes that affect the baud rate setting.

4. Turn on the TSC2. Allow the device to warm up and boot to its main display.

5. Point the Contour XLR at an object, and press the trigger. Verify that the distance value displays on the Contour's front panel as it should.

6. Confirm that the distance value also appears on the TSC2. The TSC2 should prompt the user to save or delete the new value.

7. Continue to shoot and save distance values, as needed.

Identify A Chevy Rear End

Identify a Chevy Rear End

A rear end of a car is the combination of the rear axle and differential gears located at the rear of the vehicle encased in either a cast-iron or aluminum housing. It converts the torque sent by the transmission, enabling the power transfer that drives the vehicle. According to Chevrolet High Performance, the most common GM/Chevrolet rear ends are the 7.5- and 8.2-inch, 10- and 12-bolt and Dana 60. Although Chevrolet has used different rear end models throughout its history, all can be visually identified. Casting codes can also be used to identify the manufacture date.

Instructions

1. Count the number of inspection cover bolts on the rear end housing. The inspection cover is on the back of the housing, seen by looking forward under the license plate at the rear of the vehicle. It is a round cover, fastened with bolts, used to gain access to the differential gears.

2. Identify the most common GM rear-end types. According to Year One Tech, the bolt number count is as follows: 10 bolts on GM 10-bolt, 8.25 and Dana 60 rear ends, 12 bolts on the GM 12-bolt rear end and nine bolts on the GM 7.25.

3. Look at the shape of the inspection cover and the gasket. All Chevrolet rear ends can be identified by comparing the gasket shape to an identification chart similar to the one found on Drivetrain's differential identification page (see References). A visual chart of different GM/Chevrolet rear ends is found on Ring & Pinion's differential types web page (see References).

4. Locate the GM manufactured rear-end casting date on the housing. It is located at the base of the housing, on a flat surface facing upwards. It consists of a letter and three numbers, i.e., A141. The first position, "A" represents the month of manufacture, in this case, January. The second and third positions represent the day of the month and the last position is the decade year. Month codes begin with "A" for January and end with "L" for December.

Sell A Motorcycle

Sell a Motorcycle

You have a motorcycle that you don't want anymore. Maybe you want to purchase a newer model, or just clean out your garage. Before selling your motorcycle, think things through and prepare. A little time and preparation will maximize your profit and help you sell the motorcycle more quickly.

Instructions

1. Decide your sales strategy. There are many places you can sell a motorcycle. Choose online sites such as eBay or Craigslist, local publications and newspapers, make fliers, or do a combination of all three. Select a method that works for you. Someone who is not comfortable making transactions over the internet might do well to stick to local publications and fliers.

2. Learn the value of your motorcycle. If it is a custom bike, the value will be more subjective. If your motorcycle is stock, check Kelley Blue Book to determine market value. Price your motorcycle accordingly. Many factors will affect sales price, but this will help you set a price range that will be most accurate.

3. Prepare your motorcycle. Make any affordable repairs to make the bike more desirable to potential buyers. A $50 repair may not be something you want to do, but it will increase the value of the motorcycle to someone intending to purchase the motorcycle. Clean and shine it. If your motorcycle looks good, it will sell faster than one that is less attractive. The time and effort put into a good cleaning and waxing will reward the seller with more profit.

4. Make sure you have the title readily available. If you have a lien on your motorcycle, you need to disclose this prior to making the sale. If you don't have the title, obtain a new copy so that the sales transaction will be completed quickly. No one wants to wait on a title when purchasing a new vehicle.

5. Photograph your motorcycle from a variety of angles. To sell your motorcycle on the internet; great photographs are a must. Your audience could be located anywhere and likely will not be able to casually come and take a look at your bike. Good photographs provide information that may turn a casual inquiry into a sale.

6. Write a description of your motorcycle, prepare your fliers and post your information online if desired. Read information available on the website you plan on using to determine the process. Each website is different and will have specific processes and regulations.

7. Post fliers in local motorcycle dealerships and shops. Most of these businesses will provide a bulletin board for you to use. This is a good place to find buyers in the market for a different motorcycle.

8. Wait for contact from interested buyers. Make sure your contact information is correct. If you receive an inquiry, answer it promptly. If you do not get back with someone in a timely manner, they may already have purchased another motorcycle while waiting on you.

9. Be prepared for any offers you may receive. Decide ahead of time whether you will accept checks or other payment such as Paypal. Set a bottom line price if there is a dollar amount you must receive and stick to it.

Increase Horsepower For My Harley 1980 Flh

The 1980 Harley-Davidson FLH was a large motorcycle for its time.

Increasing power on a 1980 Harley FLH Electra Glides is largely a matter of using available bolt-on parts commonly found in Harley performance catalogs. The traditional rules apply for building power: more air, more fuel, more exhaust. The 1980 FLH was a big motorcycle for its time, putting out 67 horsepower from 81 cubic inches of engine. Keeping up with today's motorcycles, however, presents a bit of a problem for FLH enthusiasts.

Instructions

1. Remove and replace the stock exhaust with a high-flowing performance exhaust. If you don't want to contend with the additional noise, there are plenty of exhaust systems on the market that produce a more mellow, relaxed exhaust note while still providing the power benefits of an open exhaust.

2. Replace the stock air filter with a high-flow air filter. Although more expensive than traditional filters, they are also cleanable, so they can last quite literally for the life of your motorcycle.

3. Re-jet the carburetors. Older carburetor jets are much smaller and more inefficient than current jets. Purchasing and installing a carburetor jet kit for your FLH will let more air and fuel into the carburetor, allowing the engine to produce more power.

Gifts For Grandparents Who Like Harleydavidson

Give your grandparents a Harley-Davidson accessory as a gift.

When you think of Grandma and Grandpa having a good time, a common image probably comes to mind: grandparents playing a board game, reading a book or gardening. On the contrary, many grandparents and older folk might enjoy more stimulating activity, such as riding their Harley-Davidson bikes on a nice afternoon, or adding accessories and other goodies to bikes to customize them. If your grandparents love Harley-Davidson, consider getting them a gift that matches their tastes.

Jewelry

Both genders who love Harley paraphernalia will enjoy a well-crafted piece of jewelry with the Harley-Davidson logo emblazoned on it. Consider a skull- or flame-decorated watch for Grandpa, or a diamond and mother-of-pearl Harley watch for Grandma. Harley cuff links or a leather-strap bracelet might be the cool accessory for Grandpa, while Grandma might enjoy a cubic zirconia skull charm or the bar-and-shield Harley logo on a pair of earrings. If it has the Harley-Davidson logo on it, jewelry can dress up any biker's outfit, for the young or old.

Motorcycle Parts

If your grandparents are not into jewelry, consider getting them that sought-after part that will help them customize their Harley bike. Find out the year and model of their bike, and ask questions about how they want personalize it. A comfortable bike seat, luggage system or backrest can help older folks travel longer distances on motorcycles. Additionally, audio kits, chrome mufflers or a decorative license plate cover might do the trick for the hard to please Harley-Davidson grandparents.

Apparel

Clothing can protect the skin from sun and windburn, provide warmth against the cold and keep a body dry during inclement weather. Clothes with a Harley-Davidson logo printed or embroidered on them can bring a big smile to a Harley lover. A grandmother who complains of being cold might enjoy a black-and-pink leather Harley jacket, while a grandfather can look cool in a leather vest complete with tassels. Gloves and sunglasses can add to the "cool" factor and also protect against wind chap and glare from the sun. Even a T-shirt with a Harley logo on the back can be enjoyed by grandparents who identify with Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

Keepsake Items

Consider getting a collectible Harley-Davidson item for your grandparents to help fuel their passion for their favorite brand. Wine and beer glasses with the Harley logo, a skull picture frame or Harley-Davidson clock can make your grandparents feel right at home. Get them a set of water bottles if they are going on a trip or a set of coasters to hang out at home with. Even a skull sign can decorate a garage or bike shed or can complement your grandparents' favorite hangout area.

Start A Compaq Presario In Safe Mode

The Compaq Presario badge can refer to either a desktop or laptop computer; the lineup has been around since the early 1990s. Despite the possible difference between computer models, the procedure for entering safe mode is the same. Compaq Presario computers are installed with Windows (the version will depend on which model your Presario is and when it was introduced), and despite the major differences between Windows operating systems, entering safe mode is the same on all of them.

Instructions

1. Click on "Start" (in Windows Vista and 7, this is a small orb on the bottom left corner of your screen), and select "Restart."

2. Press the "F8" key on your keyboard continuously (do not hold it) once your computer starts rebooting. This will redirect you to the boot menu.

3. Select "Safe Mode" using the arrow keys and press "Enter." On some systems, "Safe Mode" will be displayed with a number beside it. If so, press the corresponding number to restart in safe mode.

Get Rid Of Grub Worms

Grub worms are a serious lawn pest that can do incredible damage to your turf if left untreated. If you have brown patches in your grass, you likely have an infestation. Grub worms eat the roots of your grass and can be controlled if you follow the correct procedures. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Know identify grub worms. They are white with a red head and a dark rear-end. They are C-shaped and usually about the size of the tip of your thumb.

2. Call your local Agricultural Extension Service and ask when grub worm eggs are typically laid and when the grubs are likely to be active in your area. You will find the phone number in the government section of your phone book.

3. Sample your yard in the month the eggs are laid and again in the month the grubs are most active. To sample your yard for grub worms, cut three sides of a 1-foot square of grass with a shovel and lift up the grass to make a flap. If you see more than five grubs, treatment is necessary.

4. Purchase beneficial nematodes from your local gardening center. These are microscopic organisms that feed on larvae. Mix the nematodes with water as directed on the package, and spray your grass with the mixture.

5. Keep your lawn lightly-watered to help offset the root damage caused by grub worms.

6. Attract worm-eating birds like robins and other song birds to your backyard. They are typically fond of eating grubs for breakfast.

Replace A Brake Line On A Harley

The brake system may be the most important safety feature on a motorcycle.

One of the first customizations many riders make to their Harley-Davidson motorcycle is changing the handlebars. It sounds pretty simple at first--unbolt the old ones, then transfer over the old parts to the new one. However, if the brake line is too short, it impedes your range of motion and becomes a safety hazard. If it is too long, it may scratch and damage your motorcycle. Fortunately, replacing the brake line is fairly easy and can be completed just about anywhere with some simple tools.

Instructions

1. Move your motorcycle to a clean, level surface. Place your motorcycle in first gear to prevent accidental movement. Place the run/off switch to "off." Consult your owner's manual and follow the instructions to disconnect your negative battery terminal.

2. Drain the fluid from your front brakes. First, cover your painted surfaces with shop towels to prevent damage from brake fluid or loose parts. Connect tubing to the bleeder valve located on your brake caliper. Run the tubing to a clean bucket. Using the adjustable wrench, open the bleeder valve--only one half to one turn should be enough. With the motorcycle upright, use the Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the master cylinder cover on your front brakes. Pump the brake lever and fluid should begin to flow. When the fluid stops flowing loosely, disconnect the tubing and move out of the way. Reinstall the master cylinder cover. Clean up any spilled fluid with shop towels.

3. Note the routing of the current brake line to ensure reinstallation follows the same pattern. Also, note the order of the mounting hardware where the brake line fits to the caliper and master cylinder. Using an Allen wrench, remove the brake line mounting clamps from the motorcycle. With the socket and socket wrench, remove the brake line from the master cylinder and caliper.

4. Replace the gaskets and connect the brake line fitting of the new brake line to the master cylinder. Replace the gaskets and connect the brake line fitting to the caliper. Consult your notes to ensure the line and fitting are at the proper angle and that the hardware was installed in the proper order.

5. Run the brake line through the mounting clamps and reinstall them on the motorcycle. Consult your notes to ensure the line is properly routed. Check the range of motion of your new brake line.

6. Reconnect the tubing and bucket to the caliper drain valve (it still should be open). Remove the master cylinder cover. Slowly add brake fluid until it begins to flow into the bucket. At this time, close the drain valve. Pump the front brakes several times and slowly add more fluid. Open the bleeder valve one half turn and bleed out any air in the line. Repeat until the master cylinder is full and no air bubbles are in the line. Replace the master cylinder cover. Dispose of used fluid in accordance with local laws.

Inexpensive Harleydavidson Gifts

Shop around for inexpensive Harley-Davidson gifts.

If you have a friend who owns a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, then you might want to give him a Harley-themed gift for a birthday or special occasion. The problem is, many Harley-Davidson items can be quite expensive. Cut down on costs by shopping around, taking advantage of sales and selecting small gifts that fit within your budget.

Decals

Purchase a Harley-Davidson decal from an online vendor or an official Harley-Davidson store. These decals and stickers can be put on vehicles, motorcycles, books, binders and other items. This is a simple and inexpensive way to display one's Harley pride.

Hat

While Harley-Davidson apparel--such as motorcycle jackets--can be pricey, a Harley Davidson ball cap is fairly economical. Select a hat that is in the style and color you know the gift recipient likes to wear. Purchase the hat from an official Harley store to ensure the authenticity of the product.

Model Harley

For the Harley-Davidson collector, a model motorcycle may be an appreciated gift. Die-cast models are much cheaper than the full-size Harley and come in a variety of styles and sizes. If your friend is a serious collector, then select a model he does not have. If your budget allows, purchase a glass display case to make the model look more impressive when displayed in your friend's home.

Umbrella

When the rain pours, your friend can still show his Harley loyalty with a traditional black and orange umbrella that features the Harley-Davidson symbol.

How Do You Remove Baffles From A Harley

You can remove baffles from a Harley in a few easy steps.

Removing the baffles on a Harley is usually done to create a louder sound for the ride. Many Harley riders believe that louder pipes save lives because a bike that's heard is a bike that's seen. Before removing the baffles, a Harley owner should realize that performance will drop off a bit as a result; removing the baffles changes the way air moves through the engine and exhaust system.

Instructions

1. Coat the inside of the exhaust pipe with the cutting oil. The cutting oil will help prevent sparks and metal shards from flying around your exhaust system as you are cutting.

2. Use the electric drill and hole saw to cut through the baffle--the hollow cylinder in the middle of the rear of the pipe. It is welded to a metal plate that holds the baffle in place. Place the hole saw over the opening and begin cutting. If sparks begin to fly, you may wish to stop and re-coat the muffler with cutting oil.

3. Using the needle-nose pliers, remove the baffle. Twist it, turn it and pry it until you can pull the baffle from the center of the muffler. Repeat the same process on the muffler.

4. Start the motorcycle and take it for a test ride. The sound coming from what is now a straight pipe should be deeper and throatier than it was before. Over time, the Harley's performance might wane and you might need to re-tune the engine.

What Satellites Does Dish Network Use

What Satellites Does Dish Network Use?

DISH Network is a company offering satellite television programming plus other services and products in the United States. DISH Network and DIRECTV are the main businesses providing this DBS (direct broadcast satellite) service. DISH Network is part of the DISH Network Corporation. Transmitting this type of broadcast to consumers requires numerous satellites. These satellites are positioned around the world at various orbital locations.

First Satellites

Charles Ergen, Cantey Ergen and James DeFranco established DISH Network in 1980 as EchoStar Technologies Corporation. The company received its first DBS license from the FCC in 1987. "EchoStar I" was the first satellite launched from China in December 1995. DISH Network transmitted its first broadcast in March 1996. "EchoStar II" followed in 1996, being launched from French Guiana. EchoStar I was orbiting in the 119 degrees West Longitude slot until December 2000, when it was relocated to 148 degrees West Longitude. This is the same location as EchoStar II.

EchoStar III & IV

EchoStar III was successfully launched from Florida in 1997, followed in 1998 by the EchoStar IV launching from Kazakhstan. The first was positioned at 61.5 degrees West Longitude and the second at 119 degrees West Longitude. Lockheed Martin Astro Space or Missiles and Space divsions manufactured all of the DISH Network satellites to this point. EchoStar III provided coverage from the central and mountain areas to the eastern part of the country. EchoStar IV covered all of the United States and Puerto Rico.

EchoStar V & VI

DISH Network launched EchoStar V from Florida in September 1999. Manufactured by Space Systems Loral, it is one of the companies' main satellites, with an orbital position of 119 degrees WL and a coverage area that consist of the Continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii and Puerto Rico. EchoStar VI was launched July 2004 from the same location, manufacturer, coverage area and with the same importance. Its ultimate orbital position is 110 degrees WL.

EchoStar VII - X

EchoStar VII followed in February 2002 (Lockheed Martin), and EchoStar VIII in August 2002 (Space Systems Loral). These provide local programming and DISH Networks main services throughout its coverage area. EchoStar VII was launched from Florida with orbital position of 119 degrees WL, and EchoStar VIII from Kazakhstan and final location of 110 degrees WL. EchoStar IX was launched in 2003, with the first commercial Ka-band payload for broadband service for the coverage area, and is orbited at 121 degrees WL. EchoStar X launched in February 2006, providing additional services, and is in an orbit of 110 degrees WL.

Changes at DISH Network

EchoStar made a name change to Dish Network Corporation and established EchoStar Corporation as a sister company on January 1, 2008. DISH Network kept six of the EchoStar satellites, including EchoStar V through X, with the others going to the EchoStar Corporation. In July 2008, EchoStar XI was launched with a final location of 110 degrees WL. It was manufactured by Space Systems Loral and launched from a platform at the equator in the Pacific Ocean.

Change The Oil On A Harley Davidson Crankcase

Change the Oil on a Harley Davidson Crankcase

Changing the oil on your motorcycle is one of the most important skills every motorcyclist should have. Harley-Davidson riders, however, should have a working understanding of change all three oils used by their steeds: engine, transmission and primary oils. For newcomers, changing the engine oil and filter is a good starting point, as regular replacement of the engine oil, which lubricates and cools the crankcase, is a must to prolong the life of a Harley-Davidson.

Instructions

1. Locate your motorcycle's drain plug. While most Harley-Davidson motorcycles place their drain plugs on the underside of the motor, Sportster models are equipped with a drain hose leading from the oil tank.

2. Place a catch basin or container below the drain plug and remove the drain plug bolt. Allow the oil to drain completely from the motor and replace the drain plug bolt.

3. Move the catch basin directly under the oil filter in the front portion of the motor. Remove the filter with an oil filter wrench and discard the filter.

4. Fill your new oil filter with fresh oil until it is full. Using your finger, apply a thin coating of oil to the mating surface of the filter. Screw the filter on by hand until it is seated against the motor.

5. Remove the oil filler cap from the oil tank. Using a funnel, add fresh oil into the tank. Do not add more than three quarts of oil. Replace the oil filler cap and wipe away any oil spills.

6. Start the motor and slowly loosen the oil filter. Tighten the filter as soon as oil begins to seep out from between the filter and the motor. This will remove any air that may have been trapped within the oil filter.

7. Turn off the motor and wipe the oil filter clean.

Lower Your 883 Sportster

All shock absorbers look about the same, but are application-specific in different lengths.

You can lower the front and the back of a Harley. Numerous aftermarket vendors sell "drop in" fork lowering kits that will lower your front end. But lowering the front end decreases ground clearance, which means your bike will no longer -- barely -- clear that parking lot speed bump. Getting hung up on that bump will damage your bike. Since this is an 883 Sportster, usually an entry-level Harley, a better place to begin might be to slightly lower the rear end by installing shocks that are one inch under stock length. Your seat will be lower, and an entry-level biker can do it himself.

Instructions

1. Raise the Sportster to fully upright and level by slightly raising the bike on a motorcycle jack, by driving the front wheel into a motorcycle chock, or by clamping the front wheel upright in a motorcycle clamp.

2. Unbolt the lower right shock mounting bolt that connects the old shock absorber to the frame. The bolts on Sportsters shipped after 2005 come off with an Allen socket. Earlier models unfasten with a deep well hex socket.

3. Remove the bolt, nut and washer. Remove the top mounting bolt on the right shock and save all the hardware.

4. Remove the left shock by repeating these steps.

5. Spread three or four drops of thread locker over the screws of all the mounting bolts with your finger. Bolt the new, 1-inch-under-standard-length shock absorbers into the same holes with the same bolts that held the original shocks in place. Use a torque wrench and an Allen or deep well hex socket to tighten the bolts to 48 foot pounds of torque.

6. Lower the jack or remove the bike from the chock or clamp. Push the rear end of the bike down and let it rebound up to be sure that the new shocks work.

The Average Cost Of A Tv Commercial

The Average Cost of a TV Commercial

If you're looking to place an ad during the Super Bowl, be prepared to shell out $2.4 million for a 30 second spot---and that doesn't include all of the money that goes into actually creating the ad. Fortunately, most businesses aren't looking for such prominence when they decide to make a TV commercial, and as technology improves, the costs of producing a commercial have become relatively inexpensive.

There is no real average cost to make a TV commercial; the costs vary widely depending on what production company or agency you use, the quality of the ad you want, and when and on what channel or channels the commercial will be broadcast.

History

Although unlicensed television commercials ran as early as 1928, the first-ever licensed TV advertisement was broadcast during World War II, in July 1941. Viewers in the U.S. who tuned in to brand-new NBC station WNBT-TV to watch a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies saw an ad for the Bulova watch. The advertisement reportedly cost $9 and reached approximately 4,000 households.

In the 1950s, TV commercials took off, especially for cigarettes, which spawned the very successful "Marlboro Man" campaign that featured John Wayne. As commercials became more popular, advertising agencies began to rely on creativity to make their ads stand out. Some of the most popular commercials catch viewers by surprise or make bold claims, including Volkswagen's "Think Small" campaign in 1959, Apple Computer's famous "1984" ad that ran only once, the Energizer bunny ads of the '80s and '90s, and Nike's "Just Do It" campaign, which kicked off in 1988.

Today, television ads rely on compelling imagery, witty slogans, celebrity appearances, and humor to catch the attention of a potential customer, and although commercials are much more complex (and expensive to both create and place), the goal remains the same -- to pitch an idea or to sell a product.

Costs

The cost of a television advertisement often depends on where the ad is placed. For example, national TV spots on the final of the popular show "Survivor" sold for $1 million, and commercials sold for $750,000 on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire." Big-time networks ABC, NBC, and CBS book a combined $10 billion in advertising revenue during a typical year. But producing and running an ad for a local network is much more cost-effective.

To place a commercial on a local cable station, you'll only need to pay about $50 per spot, although that depends on the time of day the ad runs, the length of the ad, and the programs being shown when the ad runs, among other things. To create a TV commercial, be prepared to spend a bit more money. Some companies, such as spotrunner.com, offer prepackaged advertisements from their digital libraries to help you save costs. In the case of spotrunner.com, you can purchase a basic prepackaged ad for less than $500, then customize it with your own script and voice overs for an additional $249, all facilitated through the company. Many local production companies do it even cheaper---for $300 or less---but it requires a bit of research to find a nearby company that can get the job done.

Tactics

So you've gotten past the cost factor and you're ready to make a TV commercial to take your business or product to the next level. The first thing to do is to establish a budget that will help you determine how much you can spend to make the commercial and then to air it. Next, find a good production company utilizing search engines, directories, and word of mouth (if you see a local ad that you like, contact the advertiser to find out who its production company is).

When you're making the commercial, make sure that it stays focused on your particular brand and message, and that it has some unique quality that will make it stand out in the field. Don't be afraid to ask your customers or clients for input on what they think would work on-air.

After the commercial has been made, skip the middlemen and work directly with your local (or national) cable provider to get your ad placed. You can also think about airing your commercial online, on your website or on a video site such as YouTube, to gain more exposure.

Considerations

Unless your business is strictly local, placing your commercial on national television may be your ultimate goal. A few smart moves can create the same desired result. Two options to consider for widespread viewership are to advertise on multiple local channels, or to advertise on national television stations that have spots for localized ads. The second option means, for example, that if your company is based in Madison, WI, you can set up your commercial so that when viewers in the Madison area tune into CNN, they will see your ad during the programming break. CNN is a national station, but your commercial can still run more cost effectively if it is reaching a limited audience. Talk to the sales representative for the cable provider to determine your options.

In the world of advertising, repetition is key, and you will probably need to buy multiple slots on television, locally or nationally, to make sure you're reaching the desired audience. Determine when your targeted viewers are most likely to be watching, and purchase advertising time accordingly.

Warning

Cost-cutting may seem desirable when making a television commercial, but take care that you're not cutting corners that will make your ad less effective. Commercials are very high-profile, even if they're only run on a local network, and a poorly made commercial will reflect poorly on your business or organization. Such commercials have poor visuals or graphics, may appear fuzzy or have distorted color, and make use of advertising cliches. Many small businesses fall into the trap of trying to gain publicity by placing a television advertisement with an inadequate budget production budget, and the result is likely to make viewers want to flip the channel.

Also, because of the compression rate of commercials when they are aired, the volume is typically higher than that of the regular program, which is also annoying to those who tune in. Be sure to take that into consideration when you aim to get on the air, and if your attempted outcome is less than desirable, think about making use of other venues for publicity, such as ads on the radio or the Internet.

Ideas For Decorating A Kid'S Motorcycle Bedroom

Motorcycles are perpetually popular.

Motorcycles are such a popular theme for bedrooms that you can find bedding and accessories printed in motorcycle patterns that will please kids from their infant years until they are ready to leave for college. There are motorcycle crib blankets, motorcycle toys and motorcycle posters available at many stores and online retailers. Consider the age of your child, then have some fun pulling together a motorcycle-themed bedroom. Does this Spark an idea?

Bedding

It's usually easiest to start with bed linens and build the rest of the room--paint, rugs and accessories--around the colors in the bedding. Infant blankets, quilts, comforters and duvet covers are available, and some popular makes of motorcycles even offer their own branded line of these items. If you don't want to buy items featuring a specific brand's logo, consider going with a solid color bed cover in a metallic gray, red or orange that will coordinate well with the black and chrome colors associated with motorcycles.

Walls

If you want to keep wall decorations to a minimum but still create a vibrant room, splash bold colors on the walls that coordinate with your bedding. Another option is to keep the wall colors neutral, white or light gray, and give the room some pizazz with borders or wall art. Wallpaper borders, decals and murals all come in motorcycle themes. If you have an artistic streak, design your own wall art. Consider painting a motorcycle, some road markings, street signs or motorcycle gear right on the wall.

Toys

If you have a young child who prefers motorcycles to rocking horses, that's not a problem. Motorcycle-shaped rockers exist for both girls and boys. Install a bookcase to showcase a collection of toy motorcycles. You can keep furniture inexpensive by using chrome or steel shelving--its metallic gleam with contribute to the motorcycle theme.

Rugs

Throw rugs can add to the theme, too. You can find rugs with a motorcycle decoration on them, or you can purchase a rug printed with a road map, which kids can "drive" their toy motorcycles on.

Accessories

There are motorcycle-themed ceiling fans, lamps, clocks and even chandelier pendants. You can find traffic-sign throw pillows, motorcycle posters, motorcycle light switch covers and even growth charts decorated with flames. Go to a hobby shop or a store that sells real motorcycles and accessories for inspiration, and let your imagination run wild.

Remove The Oil Filter In A Harley

For many Harley-Davidson riders, maintaining their motorcycle themselves provides a source of pride as they learn new skills. Many of these basic maintenance routines, such as engine oil and filter changes, are easy enough to learn in the comfort of your own garage and can extend the life of your motorcycle by keeping it in a proper state of tune. However, newer motorcyclists often question how oil filters are removed and what steps must be taken to do it.

Instructions

Oil Filter Removal

1. Drain the engine oil first. Locate the engine oil drain plug bolt on the underside of the motor and place a catch basin beneath it.

2. Remove the drain plug bolt with an appropriately sized socket and allow the oil to drain until the flow has reduced to a trickle. Replace the drain plug bolt.

3. Slide an oil filter or strap wrench over the oil filter and twist it counter-clockwise to loosen it. Some oil filters may have a hex-type head on the top of the filter; if so, use an appropriately sized socket or wrench to loosen the filter. Unscrew and discard the oil filter.

4. Wipe away any spilled oil.

Install Harley Sportster Pipes

Installing new pipes on your Harley Sportster can be done at home with just a few tools.

Installing new exhaust pipes on your Harley-Davidson Sportster may seem like a daunting task if you're a new owner who has never performed any type of modification before. Any authorized Harley-Davidson repair shop will be able to properly make the installation for you, but you could save money by installing the new exhaust pipes yourself. Installing new exhaust pipes is actually a fairly simple task requiring just a few hand tools.

Instructions

1. Remove the old exhaust pipe. Detach the old pipe from the exhaust crossover tube and slide the pipe off of the header pipe. It may be necessary to lightly tap the pipe with a rubber hammer to loosen it if it has been there for some time.

2. Attach any brackets that may have come with your new pipes. Install a new gasket into the exhaust pipe and slide the new pipe onto the header pipe. Work the new pipe until it fits securely and all the bolt holes are aligned. Use the bolts supplied with your new exhaust pipe to attach the new pipe to the mounting brackets.

3. Attach the new pipe clamp in place and tighten it with the supplied nut and bolt. Repeat the procedure for the other exhaust pipe.

Cover Electrical Wall Plates With Wallpaper

You can dress up those plastic wall plates.

Finding light switch covers that match your walls can be a real trick if they're papered, especially if the pattern is intricate and the colors unusual. One solution is to paper the electric plate covers themselves. It just takes a few minutes and a little artistic ability. Then those plastic plates will not distract from the charm of the wallpaper. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Hold a piece of wallpaper over the light switch. Adjust the position of the paper until the pattern on it matches the pattern on the surrounding wall. Using your pencil, mark the paper just outside each corner of the switch plate, which you should be able to see or feel behind the paper. Make the marks deep enough that they will be visible from the other side of the wallpaper.

2. Turn off the power to the switch at the fuse box. Unscrew the switch plate. Make sure to remember where you put the screws.

3. Lay your marked piece of wallpaper on thick cardboard, face side down. Lay the switch plate on top of the paper, face side down, positioned with corner marks you made. With your pencil and straight-edge, draw a roughly half-inch border around the outer edge of the switch plate. Then trace the inside of the square switch hole, making your lines just a little smaller than the hole. Draw circles where the screw holes are.

4. Remove the switch plate and use your razor knife to cut out the border you've drawn and the hole for the switch plate. For each circle where the screw holes go, carve a very small X (no wider than the width of the hole).

5. Brush wallpaper adhesive around the front and thin side edges of the socket plate. With the wallpaper piece lying face-down, lay the plate face-down on it, aligning the switch holes and the X's at the screw holes. Press to adhere the glue. Turn the plate over and smooth the paper around the edges and inside the switch hole. Turn it back over and use small pieces of masking tape to hold the wallpaper flaps to the back of the plate.

6. Replace the plate on the switch. Push the screws through the X's you made over the screw holes. Turn the power back on.

Know If I Have Forward Controls On My 2007 Harley Sportster

The Harley-Davidson Sportster family of motorcycles represents one of the first commercially produced super bikes available to the general public. Its signature peanut gas tank and available 1,200-cc "small-twin" engine make it a favorite among riders. Riding position and foot controls come in two general configurations: standard and forward. Determination of your particular model will be based upon foot placement and riding position.

Instructions

1. Have a friend hold the motorcycle upright and level for you.

2. Sit on the bike and place your feet on the foot pegs.

3. Observe your riding position and the angle of your legs. If your feet are underneath you, your knees are at an acute angle, and the pegs are underneath and slightly to the rear of the rear cylinder, you have standard controls. If your feet are slightly forward of your body, with your knees at a more open angle and the pegs are forward and near the front cylinder, you have forward controls.

Comparison Of Hd Plasma Lcd & Led Televisions

Plasma, LCD and LED HDTVs offer sharper and brighter pictures than traditional televisions.

Three of the most popular types of high-definition televisions are plasma, LCD and LED. Plasma TVs tend to be the brightest, but LCD and LED TVs are usually more energy efficient and thinner.

Plasma

The picture in a plasma television is generated when ionized gas (plasma) reacts with electrodes stored between two thin layers of glass. This reaction is self-illuminating, so no backlight is required and the image is bright with high contrast levels. However, plasma TVs are not as energy efficient as LCD or LED TVs, or even some standard definition sets. Plasma TVs also are restricted by size; they cannot be smaller than 42 inches and do not work at altitudes above 6,500 feet.

LCD TVs

LCDs also use two panes of glass (or other transparent material), but instead of gas, a thin layer of liquid crystals is stored. The LCD generates the image and color of the display, but the image needs a backlight to be visible. LCD TVs use cold cathode fluorescent lamps to do this. CCFLs are more energy efficient than plasma displays and can be used on TVs of all sizes, but the edges and corners of the display are usually dimmer than the rest, and the contrast and black levels can be lacking when compared to plasma displays.

LED TVs

An LED TV actually is an LCD TV. The difference is that the TV uses LED lights instead of CCFL lights. While CCFLs are long tubes that go across the entire TV screen, LED lights are small, individual lights that are laid out in an array. Only the lights that are required for each picture are used, so contrasts are higher with deeper blacks. Because LED lights are smaller than CCFLs, LED TVs tend to be thinner and more lightweight than LCD TVs.

Figure The Scale Of Model Trains

Figure the scale of model trains.

People who engage in model railroading as a hobby spend hours setting up miniature tracks and environments through which to run their trains. The train models are scaled-down versions of real locomotives, and many different scales are used. The most popular scale is known as "HO," and it is 1:87. That means a real locomotive will be 87 times longer, taller and wider than the model of it. Other scales include "Large" scale, which is 1:12; "O" scale, which is 1:48; and "N" scale, which is 1:160. If you don't know what scale your model is, you can figure it out based on the size of the train it represents.

Instructions

1. Place one end of a ruler or measuring tape at the center of one of the front wheels, and measure the distance to the center of the rear wheel on the same side of the train. This distance is called the wheelbase. Write this number on a piece of paper. Measure the model's height and width, and write down the measurements.

2. Write down the wheelbase, height and width of the actual train your model is patterned after. If you don't know the real train's dimensions, you may be able to consult a book about the train or the company that built it, or call the company and ask what the dimensions are. There is no universal database for locomotive dimensions. You may be able to find a website devoted to your particular locomotive. The simplest method may be to type the name of your locomotive model into a search engine to find a reference book or a website so you can obtain its dimensions. See Resources for some websites listing locomotive manufacturers and other railroad information to get started.

3. Multiply the wheelbase length, given in feet, by 12 to find out how long it is in inches. For example, a 100-foot wheelbase is 1,200 inches long. Divide this number by the number of inches of the wheelbase of your model. If your model is 13.8 inches long and the real train is 1,200 inches long, the scale is 1:87. If you don't know the wheelbase of the real train but know the height or width, use one of those dimensions and divide by the corresponding dimension of your model. A scale model will be constructed proportionally, so you can use wheelbase, height or width to figure out the scale.

Convert A Harley Davidson Radio Output To A Bluetooth

Heading out on the open ride mounted on a Harley Davidson is the epitome of freedom for many. when heading out for road trips it is entertaining to listen to a little music during the tour. Modern Harley Davidson motorcycles are equipped with radios and satellite XM. Because many Harleys are loud and thunderous, it makes it hard to hear the music or to keep the radio at levels acceptable for noise ordinance laws. A solution is to sync the radio to a Bluetooth listening headset. After market Bluetooth adapters are made, some exclusively for Harley Davidsons, that sync the radio to the Bluetooth listening headset.

Instructions

1. Plug the Bluetooth radio adapter into the radio's input jack -- typically found on the right hand side of the radio. This is the same jack used to insert MP3 players and iPod jacks.

2. Turn the radio on and wait for the adapter light to come on. When the light comes on, turn on your Bluetooth-equipped headset.

3. Wait for the adapter to recognize the Bluetooth headset and program it to broadcast to the device.

4. Put the headset on and listen to check the connection. Adjust volume, stations and settings to your desired placements.

Dynojet A Harley

Installing a Dynojet system in your Harley will give you increased horse power and a competitive advantage in close-course racing.

Fitting your Harley-Davidson motorcycle with a Dynojet will help you squeeze out extra horsepower, which is crucial in many races. However, be sure that you will use your motorcycle exclusively for racing, as Dynojet aftermarket kits are not designed for day-to-day driving or street use or on vehicles required to meet emissions standards. Installing a Dynojet will require some mechanical familiarity with your motorcycle. You should know where your carburetor is as well as remove it and adjust fuel flow.

Instructions

Installation

1. Select and purchase the Dynojet kit that fits your Harley Davidson model number and options. Read the enclosed manufacturer's instructions carefully. Set aside all parts so that they are within reach.

2. Secure your Harley-Davidson with the engine off. Put on your work gloves and safety glasses. Remove the carburetor float bowl. Remove any excess gasoline before beginning installation. Remove the main jet holder and replace with the Dynojet emulsion tube. Install the Dynojet main jet by screwing it onto the threads of the emulsion tube. Locate the side lift hole and use the drill bit provided in your Dynojet kit and your drill to enlarge the hole.

3. Install your Harley's e-clip into the Dynojet needle. Replace your stock slide spring with the Dynojet slide spring. Locate the fuel mixture plug, about 8 inches above the main jet. Turn the fuel mixture screw until it is past 3.5 and then untwist the fuel mixture screw until it is at exactly 3.5.

4. Replace the carburetor float bowl and reinstall the assembly into your Harley. Haul your motorcycle to a closed track for testing. Check for an increase in acceleration and power but also pay attention to how your Harley handles at regular driving speed. If your Harley struggles to maintain speed, you may need to install a slow jet later to control some of the performance enhancements of your Dynojet.

Design Employee Benefit Packages

Both employers and employees used to think about benefits as a static, predefined package that was the same for all employees of the same seniority except for a few individual insurance options. Today, benefits packages are much more flexible than they used to be. And not just flexibility in terms of more health insurance options and retirement plan choices, but flexibility in giving employees the choice to have more paid vacation and more comprehensive (and expensive) insurance coverage.

Instructions

1. Establish a total benefit amount per employee per year. Some companies use relatively simple formulas based on years of seniority, and others adopt more complex formulas assessing the relative "value" of each employee (based on job, professional qualifications, seniority and performance) and assigning a benefit amount (or total compensation amount) on that basis.

2. Create some general criteria for your benefits plan. Is it going to be a traditional vacation accrual plan based on seniority and the company matching the employee's health insurance premiums at a specific percentage (50/50 or 75 percent employer/25 percent employee, for example), or is it going to be a more flexible plan with employees "spending" their benefits allotment as they see fit, or something in between?

3. Research currently available group health insurance plans. See what plans fit into your budget based on the total number of employees in your company, and find a range of plans offering various levels of coverage.

4. Implement a benefits plan that furthers your corporate strategy and best meets the needs of the most employees of the business. No benefits plan is going to be perfect for everyone, but you can design a benefits plan that is flexible enough so that all employees can customize a benefits package to fit their lifestyles.

Wire A Harley Tachometer

Wire a Harley Davidson tachometer in a few steps and with some basic tools.

Harley Davidson motorcycles have a nearly flawless reputation when it comes to customer loyalty, pride and satisfaction. Every conceivable component, accessory and option can be purchased for Harley motorcycles, including a vast array of add-on electronics. Unfortunately, some Harley Davidson motorcycles do not come equipped with a tachometer as standard equipment for the instrument cluster. That has not stopped Harley enthusiasts from purchasing Harley tachometers for their motorcycles. Many tachometer kits come ready to install. Knowing the proper wiring procedure can help the motorcycle owner complete the task in a short time with a few basic tools.

Instructions

1. Place the motorcycle in a well-lighted area. Raise it up on its utility kickstand, if it is equipped with one. Refer to your owner's manual for the battery location; it could be under the seat, out in the open or behind a side cover. Remove the bolts to whichever component you need to take off with a socket and wrench. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a small socket and wrench. Turn the gas valve to the "Off" position. Loosen the fuel line clamp with a screwdriver and pull the hose free.

2. Locate the mounting bolts for the gas tank. Loosen and remove the bolts with the proper size socket and wrench. Pull the tank up and disconnect any wire jacks belonging to inset tank gauges. Set the tank down. Open the kit and assemble the mounting hardware. Most tachometers have a convenient handlebar or triple tree clamps.

3. Set the tachometer clamps around the handlebar. Insert the through-bolts and place the lock washers and nuts on the bolt threads. Tighten the bolts with a socket and wrench. Adjust the tachometer and tighten the swivel adjusting bolt with a socket and wrench. Loosen and remove the screws to the headlight shell with a screwdriver. Look at the tachometer wires; one will be marked for the power and is usually red. Another wire will be green for the magneto or coil connection and the black wire has a ground designation.

4. Connect the negative cable backup to the battery with a socket and wrench. Turn the ignition key to the "On" position. Locate the hot wire inside the headlight case by using a test light to probe the wire while you turn the ignition key on and off. The test light will illuminate on the proper hot wire. After identifying the hot wire, remove the negative battery cable with a socket and wrench. Route the positive red wire on the tachometer down to the headlight casing and push it through the grommet hole in the headlight case.

5. Cut the red wire to the proper length with wire strippers. Make sure you have left enough wire to tape to the headlight wire loom or tie-strap it to the frame. Join the tachometer positive wire to the headlight positive wire with a snap wire connector by aligning both wires together and snapping the connector over them with your fingers. Look for a ground bolt or screw inside the headlight case and remove it with a socket or screwdriver.

6. Run the tachometer ground wire through the headlight case grommet. Cut off the excess wire with the wire strippers. Crimp a wire eyelet on the ground wire with the wire strippers and place the eyelet over the bolt or screw. Tighten the ground bolt or screw with a socket or screwdriver. Replace the headlight shell. Screw the headlight shell screws back in with the screwdriver.

7. Take the green tachometer wire and route it along the top support frame, next to any other existing wire loom. Route the wire to the magneto location, or to the coil, if so equipped. Leave enough wire to connect to the "trigger" side or negative post on the magneto. Do the same for the negative terminal for a coil. Cut off the excess wire. Crimp a wire eyelet on the green wire with the wire strippers. Unscrew the nut on the magneto or coil and place the eyelet over it. Tighten the nut back down with a socket.

8. Look at your wiring route. Secure the tachometer wires to existing looms or to the frame parts with black electrical tape and tie straps. Tape them neatly, and if possible, tuck them on the underside of any larger loom. Place the gas tank back on its mount and start securing the bolts by hand. Tighten the gas tank bolts with a socket and wrench. Push the fuel line back on the tank nozzle and tighten the hose clamp with a screwdriver. Turn on the gas tank valve.

9. Reconnect the negative battery cable with an end wrench. Replace the seat or side case if you had to remove it to access the battery. Tighten the bolts with a socket and wrench. Test ride the motorcycle and note the operation of the tachometer.
