Motorcycle Events In Milwaukee Wi

Motorcycles are popular in Milwaukee and elsewhere in the Midwest.

Motorcycle events are popular across the Midwest, where there are long, sprawling highways for cruising a fleet of bikes. In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, numerous motorcycle-based events take place each year, ranging from rallies to smaller events at motorcycle dealerships.

Milwaukee Rally

The Milwaukee Rally takes place over three days each year toward the end of summer. It consists of rides along the shore of Lake Michigan between Milwaukee and Manitowoc, about 75 miles north. Along the way are vendors serving food and drinks, events such as poker runs and live music in Milwaukee at the final area. House parties are held at night by event organizers and some bar sponsors open their doors to VIP ticket holders and attendees.

Stock Motorcycle NHRA Races

Stock motorcycle races take place regularly in Milwaukee as part of National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) races and events. Milwaukee is a regular stop on the tour and is known as a popular motorcycle town. These races often promote different types of motorcycles. For example, the Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines team rides American V-Twin-powered Harley-Davidson V-Rod motorcycles and won the Pro Stock Motorcycle division of the National Hot Rod Association's Full Throttle Drag Racing Series four of the six years between 2003 and 2009 in Milwaukee. Check the NHRA schedule for races in the Milwaukee area, held at the Great Lakes Dragaway track.

Ice Racing

On Lily Lake in Kenosha, a suburb south of Milwaukee, winter is the best time for motorcycle racing. Riders race on the lake in the dead of winter, drawing racing fans and new spectators to watch and cheer them on. The tires of these bikes are outfitted with hundreds of screws, allowing them to dig in to the solid ice for better traction as they cruise at 60 mph around an oval track bordered by orange cones. The popularity of the sport has been surging each winter in southern Wisconsin.

Clean Mag Wheels

Clean your mag wheels regularly to keep them shiny and dirt free.

Mag car wheels are attractive, but the wheels do attract dirt and dust from the air as well as asphalt and debris from the roads the wheels travel on. Over time, asphalt and debris builds up on the mag wheels and can cause the wheels to discolor and rust. Each time you clean your car, clean your car's mag wheels with a non-abrasive, acid-free cleaner and a soft cloth. Abrasive cleaners will cause scratches that can be permanent.

Instructions

1. Spray the mag wheels with water from a water hose to remove any loose dust and dirt from the wheels. Wear latex gloves to keep your hands from getting wet and dirty.

2. Apply 2 tbsp. of a grease cleaner or cleaner designed for cleaning mag/aluminum wheels onto a soft, non-abrasive cloth or rag.

3. Scrub the mag wheel with the cleaner-soaked cloth or rag.

4. Scrub any stubborn dirt and grime buildup with a soft, non-abrasive cloth or rag soaked in 2 tbsp. of cleaner and wrapped around the bristles of a small brush.

Do not scrub the mag wheel directly with the brush--this will cause scratches on the wheels.

5. Spray the mag wheel to wash away the dirt and grime buildup.

6. Reapply cleaner to the cloth or rag. Continue cleaning the mag wheel until it is dirt and grime free.

7. Spray the mag wheel with water to rinse away the cleaner and any remaining dirt.

8. Repeat steps 2 through 7 for the remaining mag wheels.

9. Dry the mag wheels with a soft, non-abrasive cloth or rag.

10. Apply 2 tbsp. of a mag wheel polish/compound to a soft, non-abrasive cloth or rag.

11. Polish the mag wheels with the polish/compound-soaked cloth or rag. Reapply polish/compound if needed.

Check The Transmission Fluid On A Nightster

The Harley-Davidson Nightster was introduced in 2007 as part of the Sportster line of bikes, which has been produced by the company since 1957. Checking the transmission fluid is part of the regular maintenance you should do on the bike. Ideally, you should check the trans fluid every one to two weeks when checking the other fluids in the motorcycle. The transmission fluid keeps the gears running smoothly and the engine optimized. Neglecting this maintenance can lead to costly engine damage. Fortunately, checking the transmission fluid only takes a few minutes.

Instructions

1. Run the bike for five to 10 minutes and shift through all the gears to warm up the engine. Place the Nightster in a motorcycle stand on level ground.

2. Remove the 10 screws on the engine casing at the front of the bike with the Phillips screwdriver. Lay the casing and screws to the side in a safe place.

3. Pull out the dipstick from the transmission fluid tank. Wipe off the stick with the rag. Check the appearance of the fluid; it should be a translucent red color. If the fluid is dark or opaque, it's time for a transmission fluid change.

4. Put the dipstick back into the tank and pull it out again. Read the level of fluid on the stick. The level should be at least halfway between the minimum and maximum lines. If it is less than halfway between the two lines, place the funnel into the tank and pour in small amounts of fluid at a time, checking the levels after each filling. Replace the dipstick when finished filling.

5. Secure the casing on the bike with the screws.

Specifications Of The 1982 Amc Eagle Sx/4

Its third year of production, the 1982 AMC Eagle offered a variety of configurations on a four-wheel drive platform. The SX/4 was in its second year pioneering the off-road car market with raised suspension, an optional V6 and plenty of options.

Power

The base powerplant for the 1982 SX/4, a 150 cubic inch displacement four-cylinder mated to a four-speed manual transmission, making for a cheap offroader. The 258 cubic inch displacement optional inline-six (I-6) engine mated to a three-speed automatic transmission was the offroad enthusiasts' engine of choice. The I-6 was rated at 20 miles per gallon.

Drivetrain

The Eagle sat three inches higher than its Concord/Hornet Chrysler cousin on top of 15 inch -- instead of 14 inch -- rims with P195/75R15 steel-belted rubber. Power steering and disc brakes were standard with the SX/4 as well as a sway bar. The AMC Select Drive system allowed the Eagle to be switched from two-wheel drive to four-wheel drive as needed for the first time. The final axle ratio came to 2.35.

Features

Aimed at the enthusiast crowd, the SX/4 boasted a 21-gallon fuel tank, folding rear seats, two-speed wipers, a digital clock and seating for four. A sunroof, halogen lamps, stereo, tilt steering and air conditioning could all be added for a price. Over 10,000 AMC Eagle SX/4s were produced for the 1982 model year, and 1983 would be their final year of production.

Change The Oil In A 1340 Evolution

The 1,340-cc Evolution engine was used by all Harley-Davidson motorcycles built between 1984 and 1998, when it was largely replaced by the new Twin-Cam 88 engines. As of 2011, the Sportster remains the only model from the Harley-Davidson that still employs the Evolution engine, in both 883-cc and 1,200-cc variants. Although the Evolution was praised for its reliability, keeping the engine at its operational peak required regular oil changes every 2,500 miles. The task is fairly straightforward, but there are a few differences between varying Harley-Davidson models.

Instructions

1. Let the engine idle in place for 3 to 5 minutes to warm the engine oil supply. Stop the engine once the oil has warmed, then let the oil settle for another 3 to 5 minutes.

2. Remove the oil cap from the right side of the oil tank, below the front seat. This will allow air to enter into the tank and speed up the oil drain process.

3. Locate the engine oil drain hose near the left rear frame rail, below the transmission unit. Pull the drain hose out of its retaining bracket, then remove the drain plug with a flat-head screwdriver. Alternatively, 1993 to 1998 Touring models use a crankcase drain plug, located under the front of the engine. Unscrew the drain plug, using a 5/8-inch socket and a socket wrench. Drain the engine oil into a sealable oil catch pan.

4. Clean the crankcase drain plug, if removed from a 1993 or newer Touring model, with a shop towel. Remove the drain plug washer and replace it with a new washer. Screw the drain plug into the engine by hand, then tighten it to 22 foot-pounds, using a 5/8-inch socket and a torque wrench. Skip this step if your are working on an Evolution-equipped Sportster, Softail or Dyna motorcycle.

5. Push the drain plug into the oil drain hose and tighten the hose clamp, using a flat-head screwdriver. Push the oil drain hose into its retaining bracket on the left rear frame rail.

6. Unscrew the oil filter from the oil pump at the front of the engine, using an oil filter wrench. Empty the oil filter into your oil catch pan, then set the oil filter aside for recycling. Wipe away the old oil from the oil pump threads, using a shop towel.

7. Fill a new oil filter with SAE 20W-50 motorcycle-grade engine oil, then coat the oil filter's sealing O-ring with oil. Screw the new filter onto the oil pump by hand, until the O-ring makes contact with the oil pump. Tighten the oil filter an additional half-turn by hand to seal the filter.

8. Pour 2.5 quarts of engine oil into the oil tank tank filler neck, using a funnel. Reinstall the oil cap, then start the engine. Let the engine idle for three minutes, then stop the engine and lift the motorcycle into an upright position. Check the oil level, using the dipstick built into the bottom of the oil cap. Add 1 to 2 ounces of oil into the oil tank, if the oil level is below the lower mark cut into the dipstick. Clean the dipstick with a shop towel, then reinstall the oil cap.

Difference Between A Crop Pillarbox & Stretch On An Hd Directv

A wide-screen television is about twice as wide as it is tall.

Crop, pillar box and stretch are the options available to people with a DirecTV high-definition (HD) receiver and 16-to-9 aspect ratio wide-screen televisions that allow them to view 4-to-3 aspect ratio, or standard, programs. "Aspect ratio" describes the shape of a television screen, the ratio of the screen's width vs. its height. A standard television is just a little wider than it is tall, and programs broadcast in that format don't normally fill the entire screen of a wide-screen television. The pillar box, crop and stretch options compensate for the difference.

Pillar Box

The piller box option displays the entire 4-to-3 aspect ratio-formatted program on a 16:9 aspect ratio television by adding black or gray bars on both sides of the screen to fill in the extra space. Pillar box is the only option for watching a 4-to-3 program without distorting or losing any of its picture.

Crop

The crop option fills the wide-screen television with a 4-to-3 program's picture by expanding the entire picture to the width of the wide screen. It retains the picture's aspect ratio so that it isn't distorted. Because the option expands the whole picture, the picture's height increases to more than the height of the wide screen. As a result, it crops, or cuts off, the picture's top and bottom.

Stretch

The stretch option stretches a 4-to-3 aspect ratio program's picture to fit a wide-screen television. It doesn't have to stretch the picture's height to fill the screen from top to bottom, but it stretches the picture considerably from side to side to fill the wide screen. The side-to-side stretching causes some picture distortion, making displayed elements appear slightly squashed.

Option Selection

The options allow you to decide which way they prefer to watch a standard, 4-to-3 aspect ratio program on a 16-to-9 wide-screen television with a DirecTV HD receiver. If you prefer a particular option, you can select it by using the Guided Setup option on your DirecTV HD receiver. Whenever you turn to a channel broadcasting a 4-to-3 program, your television will display the format you chose.

Ship A Motorcycle From The Usa

Shipping a motorcycle requires proper documents.

American motorcycles are well made and highly respected all over the world. Many international businesses and private parties purchase motorcycles made in America. The cost of these motorcycles is significantly less than in their own country. After a sale takes place, shipment from the U.S. is a process that requires specific shipping documents and compliance with both American and the destination country's import/export laws. Likewise, motorcycles that are shipped abroad for personal use (such as relocation overseas) must follow the designated safety procedures.

Instructions

1. Prepare the motorcycle to be shipped. Make sure it is clean and all fluids are removed. If the motorcycle is used, drain the gas tank to at least one-fourth full. Leave the motorcycle in an upright position and disconnect the battery.

2. Decide if you wish to ship the motorcycle in a shipping crate or as loose freight. Crating is required by most international carriers and is therefore recommended. Pack the motorcycle into the crate or hire a crating company to do this service for you. Write down the weight and the dimensions (length by width by height) of your container.

3. Locate international shipping companies (freight forwarders) in your home area. Inquire to several companies and request rate quotes for shipment of your bike. In order to receive a rate quote, you must provide the name and address of both the shipper and consignee - receiving party, the weight and dimensions of your crated bike, when you need the shipment delivered, insurance specifications, and which level of service you desire. You can choose full door-to-door service or less expensive service such as port-to-port. Shipping companies will take a few days to prepare quotes.

4. Compare quotes and decide which company to use. Apart from price, research the history of the company and their level of expertise in shipping motorcycles. Choose a company and provide the required shipping documents: Title (permission to ship motorcycle by any lien holder), a copy of valid identification, commercial invoice, and certificate of origin. Your freight forwarder can advise you, if you need help preparing any documents.

5. Prepay for shipping service. Drop off the bike to the shipping company at an agreed location or tender the bike to the carrier for door-to-door service. Your shipping company will provide you with a tracking number to follow the progress of your shipment.

Free Up Memory Space On A Computer

Free Up Memory Space on a Computer

A computer often becomes boggled down by too many programs and files. A lack of memory space will cause problems with your computer, including a slower running speed. From time to time, you will need to free up memory space on your computer.

Instructions

1. Delete unused program files. This is the easiest way to free up the most memory. If you have programs that you no longer plan to use, get rid of them.

2. Get rid of any files that you do not need. If your computer is overburdened by word processing, music and movie files, remove them from your computer.

3. Clear out any downloads. If you have a lot of picture and other downloads that you do not need, get rid of them. This will free up a large amount of space on your computer. Remember to empty out your recycle bin after deleting files and downloads.

4. Run a disk cleanup. To do this on Windows, go to the start up menu and go under the "Accessories" tab, then "System Tools" and click on "Disk Cleanup." This will allow temporary Internet files and start up files to be removed.

Change The Gear Oil On A Harleydavidson

Your Harley-Davidson's transmission is one of three separate components that drive your motorcycle forward. Like the motor and primary drive, the transmission uses it own fluid to lubricate the collection of gears within it. As time wears on, the oil begins to break down and lose its ability to reduce friction. If left unchanged, the transmission's gears will fail as friction continues to build. Harley-Davidson recommends changing the transmission's gear oil every 2,500 miles to extend your motorcycle's service life.

Instructions

1. Unscrew the drain plug from the bottom of the transmission, using a 5/8-inch socket and a socket wrench. Drain the transmission fluid into an oil pan.

2. Clean the drain plug's threads and tip with a shop towel. Pull the rubber O-ring off the drain plug and replace it with a new one. Screw the drain plug into the transmission and tighten it to 21 foot-pounds, using a torque wrench.

3. Unscrew the transmission's oil cap from the right side of the motorcycle. Insert a funnel into the transmission's filler neck

4. Fill the transmission with up to 1 qt.of 75W90 transmission oil. Remove the funnel and wipe away any spills with a shop towel. Screw the filler cap into place.

Difference Between Flowmaster 40 Series & 50 Series

Tame the sound of horsepower with a Flowmaster exhaust system.

Nothing says power and performance like a deep, throaty exhaust note loud enough to be heard before the car can be seen. Unfortunately, that loud growling sound of horsepower can dominate the inside of the car as well. While that may not be a problem on short weekend trips, it can become an annoying disturbance on extended daily commutes.

Flowmaster Company

Flowmaster is company that produces aftermarket exhaust systems and components for the automotive market. Started in 1983 making mufflers for race cars, Flowmaster has expanded its product line to include everything from performance street applications to exhaust systems for RVs and motorhomes, while continuing to offer a complete line for racing industry.

Flowmaster 40 Series

The Flowmaster 40 series mufflers are designed to deliver increased horsepower and torque for performance applications. The 40 series mufflers are constructed with a two chamber design that offers an aggressive exhaust note that can be heard from both inside and outside of the car.

Flowmaster 50 Series

The Flowmaster 50 Series mufflers are constructed with a three chamber design. This chamber configuration was designed to significantly lower the volume inside the car and to produce a moderate exhaust note outside of the car. Even though the sound of the 50 series has lowered, it still is able to deliver high performance.

Difference

The difference between the Flowmaster 40 and 50 series mufflers is mostly a matter of volume. While the 40 series has a ferocious growl that can be heard loud and clear both inside and out of the car, the 50 series offers lower sound levels all the way around. Performance wise, the two are virtually the same.

Install Saddlebags On A Harley 883r

Saddlebags increase carrying capacity on the 883R.

Harley-Davidson built the Sportster 883R motorcycles for sport and performance riding. Harley gave little consideration for carrying capacity on this bike as is commonly found on the larger cruiser and touring models. Purchase saddlebag bracket kits from Harley-Davidson or through aftermarket retailers. Brackets and bags bolt up easily to the frame without special tools or training.

Instructions

1. Remove the rear strut bolt from one side of the fender with an Allen wrench and open-end wrench. Install the 5/16 x 3-inch bolt, narrow-slot button, 3/4-inch spacer and lock nut into the rear strut mount hole and tighten securely with an Allen wrench and open-end wrench.

2. Remove the front strut bolt from one side of the fender with an Allen wrench and open-end wrench. Install the 5/16 x 3-inch bolt, wide-lot button, 3/4-inch spacer and lock nut into the front strut mount hole and tighten securely with an Allen wrench and open-end wrench.

3. Support the back of the frame on a bike lift so that the rear wheel is elevated clear of the ground. Block up the rear wheel with wood blocks. Remove the lower shock mounting bolt, nut and washer with wrenches.

4. Install the saddlebag roller bracket onto the lower shock mount bolt. Rotate the roller bracket so that the teardrop is pointed down and the rollers are pointed to the rear of the bike. Torque the lower shock bolt between 30 and 50 pound-feet with a torque wrench. Repeat Steps 1 to 4 on the other side of the bike.

5. Open the bag lid and peel up the vinyl locking lever cover. Lift up on the lever and slide the rear bag mounting bracket onto the rear strut button. Push the front of the bracket onto the front strut button. Push the lever down until it snaps into position and locks the bracket into place. Push the vinyl lever cover down and close it securely with the hook-and-loop fastener.

Shift A Harley Davidson Street Bob Motorcycle

Harley-Davidson twin cam engine

The Street Bob is one of Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the Dyna line. It has a custom look that includes a bobbed fender, solo seat, mini "ape-hanger" handlebars, and a blacked-out motor. The "Bobber" look is minimalist, and the motorcycle comes from the factory with no tachometer. It's necessary for the rider to learn the point for shifting by the sound of the engine.

Instructions

Upshifting

1. Accelerate, rolling the throttle toward you with your right hand, until the Street Bob should be shifted into a higher gear. After you've been riding the motorcycle for a while, you'll be able to tell by the sound of the engine. At first, consider shifting every 10 mph.

2. Roll off the throttle (away from you) while squeezing the clutch lever with your left hand.

3. Lift firmly on the shifter, which is the lever located in front of the left foot peg, with your left foot.

4. Ease out the clutch lever while rolling back on the throttle.

Downshifting

5. Decelerate by rolling the throttle away from you until a down shift is required. As with upshifting, with time you'll be accustomed to the sound of the engine. Stay with the 10 mph rule on the downshift at first. Remember that it is better to have the engine at higher revolutions per minute (RPMs) than lugging the engine (low RPMs).

6. Roll off the throttle completely while squeezing the clutch.

7. Press firmly down on the shift lever with your left foot.

8. Ease out the clutch lever. If you are down shifting to come to a stop, rolling on the throttle is not necessary. If you are down shifting before a curve or to gain power to pass a vehicle, roll on the throttle.

Shifting to Neutral

9. Roll off the throttle and squeeze the clutch lever.

10. Press firmly on the shift lever with your foot, repeatedly, until you can no longer shift down.

11. Lift up on the shift lever gently with your left foot to find neutral, which is halfway between first and second gear.

12. Ease out the clutch lever slowly. If the rear wheel is still under power from the transmission, squeeze the clutch back in and tap the shifter lightly to find neutral. Repeat Steps 2 through 4 until you've found neutral.

Connect An Hdtv Converter To Pc Monitor

With LCD monitors getting bigger and cheaper, using one as both a computer monitor and television is a good space and money saver. LCD monitors can display television at HD resolutions, specifically 1080p (1920x1080) and 720p (1440x720) and display media on PCs at resolutions even higher than that. You can use the HDTV converter box leased from your cable or satellite company or you can use an HDTV converter from a third party provider, like Tivo.

Instructions

1. Determine which interface your HDTV converter box uses. A DVI output will be a white, female connector containing several pinhole connections. An HDMI output will be a single female connector, similar to a USB port.

2. Determine which interface your LCD monitor uses. If it uses both HDMI and DVI, HDMI is always a better choice, as it streamlines the video connection and carries an audio signal as well. It is also HDCP ( a form of digital copyright protection) compliant.

3. Connect your HDTV converter to your LCD monitor. If the monitor does not automatically detect the newly installed converter box, you will need to use the monitor's manual controls to switch inputs. Consult your owner's guide for instruction specific to your monitor.

Change A Motorcycle Tire

It's harder to change a motorcycle tire for the first time than it is to change a car tire for the first time, but that doesn't mean it can't be done. To be successful, make sure you have the right tools and take the time to follow instructions.

Instructions

Remove the Old Tire

1. Gather the tools you need to change your motorcycle tire. Without the right tools, this job is next to impossible. You can usually get the tools you need at a motorcycle shop or auto supply store.

2. Deflate the old tire completely using the valve core tool. Hold onto the tool tightly because the air will come out strongly.

3. Mark the rim with a pencil to show which direction the wheel rotates.

4. Break the bead away from the rim using the bead breaker tool. This can either be easy or require a lot of manual force. You should hear a pop when the bead is broken.

5. Flip the tire over and break the bead on the other side.

6. Spray the silicone lubricant on both sides of the tire beads.

7. Insert tire irons under the tire and the rim to pry the tire off the rim. You will have to use multiple tire irons strategically placed around the tire.

8. Remove the other side of the tire from the rim. If the tire is sufficiently lubricated, you may be able to push the tire off without prying it. Some leverage may be necessary.

Install the New Tire

9. Lubricate the sidewalls of the new tire.

10. Match up the rotation mark you made on the rim with the one on the new tire. Make sure you put the tire on in the right direction.

11. Put the new tire on the rim firmly. You have to finesse it to get the edge down over the lip of the rim, and you may need to use a tire iron to finish the job. Once on, line up the valve stem where it belongs.

12. Use the air compressor to add a small amount of air to the tire.

13. Insert the tire bead into the wheel rim carefully using the Breezer tire tool. To do this, you must keep rotating the tire and work on opposite sides back and forth. This takes a lot of patience and time.

14. Inflate the tire to the recommended psi to finish.

Install An Oil Cooler On A Harleydavidson

Heat will break down your engine before its time.

Heat and friction are the enemies of engine parts, no matter what the vehicle. If you own a Harley-Davidson, you want to keep your engine as cool as possible, so one weapon is an oil cooler. Adding one to your bike will help save on wear and tear as time goes by.

Instructions

1. Remove the oil plug and drain the oil.

2. Remove the old oil filter using the oil filter wrench and throw the filter away. Take the oil filter adapter off the bike with the 7/8-inch socket.

3. Put the new oil filter adapter on the bike with the 7/8-inch socket. If your interface was dirty after removing the old filter, clean it with a rag. Cover the threading with some Teflon tape.

4. Disconnect any wire harnesses. This will vary depending on your particular Harley-Davidson model, so check the instructions with your oil filter.

5. Install the oil cooler. The precise location will vary depending on your specific bike model and on the particular cooler. Your installation kit will come with any necessary brackets for you to attach to the bike frame, and once you've attached the brackets, you'll just slide the cooler into place and tighten the proper screws. For many models, you will need to change the routing of some of the wiring, so use your wire to hold them in their new places. You may also need to remove your bike's stator to install the cooler.

6. Tighten any loose fasteners with the socket wrenches. Give the new oil filter gasket a coat of clean oil; Harley-Davidson generally recommends using 20W50 oil. After you've installed the gasket, give the filter another quarter-turn with the filter wrench.

7. Connect the oil cooler with the filter adapter by putting the hoses on. If you put the clamps on the hoses before beginning this step, it will be easier to tighten them later. Fit the ends of the hose onto the nipple and tighten the clamps.

8. Add oil to the bike's crankcase. The amount will vary, so check your manual. Turn the engine on and wait for it to warm up. Feel the oil cooler to see if it is warming up, too. If it doesn't, there is something keeping the oil from reaching it through the hoses.

9. Check the oil level one more time after you've turned the motor off. If it's low, this is probably not a leak -- initially the filter will soak up some oil after installation. Add oil as needed.

About Motorcycle Touring Tires

Touring Tires last longer than performance tires.

Losing traction due to bad weather, road conditions and treadwear on a long motorcycle ride is not something any rider wants to experience. Touring is a popular form of long-distance, multiple terrain motorcycle riding with its own market of tires designed to last longer and ride smoother than performance tires.

Function

Touring tires focus on a smooth, stable ride and increased tread life because of harder rubber compared to a performance tire. Sport-touring tires offer grip and quick warm-up times because cold weather and rain are taken into account during manufacturing that will allow an experienced rider to lean the motorcycle over and potentially drag a knee around a corner.

Types

Standard touring tires focus on longevity and comfort. Commuters or riders who enjoy long, non-aggressive rides are potential candidates for this kind of tire. Touring-sport tires are more aggressive and a very popular choice with a range of motorcycles. They offer strong handling and performance but still focus on comfort and tread life.

Features

Each touring tire has a unique tread pattern that affects performance. Year after year manufacturers come out with improved designs leading to improved performance. The Pirelli Angel St Sport-Touring Radial is an example of how this class of tire is evolving as it retains durability but offers grip once only available with street-sport tires. This is because of their zero-degree steel-belted radial construction along with a mix of resin, carbon black and high-density silica inside the rubber that molds itself to differing road conditions. The tread pattern also works to keep a larger contact patch on the pavement for increased stability and braking.

Significance

Touring tires are a long-running favorite for motorcyclists who cover many miles in a variant of weather conditions. With an increased tread-life, riders will have to buy tires less frequently. According to a 2009 "Cycle World" magazine study on motorcycle tires, 30 percent of the people surveyed owned sport-tour tires and 17 percent owned touring tires. As stated in the study, sport-touring tires accounted for the second most popular type of motorcycle tire purchased by "Cycle World" subscribers. Out of 261,019 people surveyed, 51 percent said they changed tire brands for improved durability and wear.

Warnings

Motorcycle touring safety at the machine level is partly due to the treadwear and age of a tire. The human element also affects riding safety. The Motorcycle Safety foundation advises additional refresher riding classes along the way, to never exceed personal limits, never ride impaired by alcohol or illicit substances and to wear protective gear at all times on the road, which includes a DOT-rated helmet.

Build A Harleydavidson Xr 750 Dirt Track Engine

Build an XR 750 engine for recreation or competition on flat tracks.

Harley-Davidson XR 750 motorcycles remain one of the most popular bikes in racing history. The twin-cylinder, 748 cc engines develop white-knuckle torque that continually proved successful on oval dirt tracks. Mechanics favored the factory engines because the bottom end is relatively bulletproof and seldom needed rebuilding. This reduced racing costs by limiting a build-out to the top end. Building a Harley-Davidson XR 750 dirt track engine requires precision machine work, a full complement of engine tools and mechanical expertise.

Instructions

Disassembly and Machine Work

1. Drain the engine oil. Follow the procedures in the XR 750 workshop manual and remove the engine from the motorcycle. Place the engine on a workbench and remove both carburetors. Discard the intake gaskets. Remove and discard both spark plugs.

2. Remove the front and rear rocker covers and discard the gaskets. Remove the cylinder heads with the valves intact and discard the head gaskets. Lift the push rods out of each cylinder.

3. Pry the front and rear cylinders off the crankcase and discard the crankcase gasket. Remove the wrist pin clips from both pistons. Tap the wrist pins out and take the pistons off each connecting rod. Discard the pistons, wrist pins and clips.

4. Loosen and remove the clutch cover bolts at the primary case and remove the cover. Save the cover and bolts. Remove and discard the clutch pressure plate, springs, clutch discs and the clutch basket.

5. Turn the engine around. Remove and save the timing cover bolts and the cover. Disconnect and discard the stator and ignition points.

6. Send the twin cylinders and cylinder heads to a racing shop. Have the cylinders honed. Have the heads ported and polished. Have the shop install racing valves, valve guides, valve springs and keepers. Ask the shop to provide the new pistons, rings, wrist pins and wrist-pin clips.

Assembly

7. Attach the new pistons to the connecting rods using the new wrist pins and clips. Put the new rings on each piston. Place the new cylinder gaskets from the racing kit atop the crankcase.

8. Install the pistons into the cylinder sleeves with a ring compressor tool. Torque the cylinders to the specified foot-pounds given in the workshop manual. Drop new push rods into the lifter-ports on each cylinder.

9. Place the head gaskets from the racing kit atop each cylinder. Install the newly serviced cylinder heads atop each cylinder and torque the head bolts in a crisscross pattern. Place the new rocker-cover gaskets atop each head. Fit the covers on the heads and torque the bolts in a crisscross pattern.

10. Follow the procedures in the workshop manual and install the racing ignition components. Install the racing clutch components. Reattach the saved timing cover and clutch cover using the original bolts.

11. Position new intake gaskets at the front and rear intake ports on the corresponding cylinder heads. Attach a 40 mm Keihin racing carburetor to each intake port and tighten the nuts to the specified torque. Install new spark plugs at each head. Install the engine in the motorcycle. Fill the crankcase with oil.

Set Up Cable On An Emerson Tv

Don't get frustrated and chuck your TV.

Emerson creates a wide range of electronics, including televisions. If you have an Emerson television you most likely want to connect it to your cable source. Depending on the cable source you have, the connection is going to differ slightly, with the cables and connection ports changing. However, the process of connecting the cable to the Emerson TV is the same.

Instructions

1. Determine if you are obtaining high-definition cable or standard-definition television. If you are using an HD receiver, you want to use an HDMI cable to connect the TV with the cable. However, if you are using a standard definition receiver, you want to use RCA cables.

2. Plug the HDMI cable into the HDMI port of the HD cable receiver. If using an SD receiver plug the RCA cables into the "Video Out" ports on the back of the receiver.

3. Connect the other end of the HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the Emerson television. If using RCA cables plug the tree cables into the "Video In" ports on the television. Make sure the RCA cable colors match the colors of the ports.

4. Power on the television and the cable receiver. Press the "Input" button and select either "HDMI" or "Video" as your input setting, depending on what cable connection you used.

Install An Oil Filter Kit On A Harleydavidson Shovelhead

An oil filter kit for the Harley-Davidson Shoverlhead motorcycle consists of an oil filter and a rubber gasket, or O-ring. The oil filter strains debris, such as heavy metals, from the oil. The rubber gasket creates a seal on the filter so oil doesn't leak out from the engine. Installing the oil filter kit on the Shovelhead requires about 20 to 30 minutes of labor and only a few common tools.

Instructions

1. Park the Shovelhead in a bike stand to keep it upright while completing this maintenance.

2. Remove the engine casing with a Phillips-head screwdriver and set it aside for safekeeping.

3. Remove the old oil filter by turning it counterclockwise. The oil filter is located on the transmission, which is on the side of the engine. Reach your fingers into the port and pull out the O-ring used previously.

4. Lubricate the new O-ring with a thin layer of transmission oil that is used on the motorcycle. Place the O-ring on the open end of the new oil filter. Slide the oil filter and gasket into the port. Twist it clockwise a half turn to secure it on the engine. Do not turn more than half a turn or it will be too tight to get off later. The seal tightens as the engine runs.

5. Replace the engine casing.

Change Handlebar Grips On Harleydavidsons

Change Handlebar Grips on Harley-Davidsons

After spending months of day-dreaming, days of research and hours in a dealership, you have finally selected the Harley-Davidson that is right for you. You own the Harley that best suits you as a person. Now as you look at it sitting there in your garage, the thought hits you: "I have to change it." For many owners, one of the first and easiest customizations is replacing the grips. With the right tools, this is an easy do-it-yourself project.

Instructions

1. Move your motorcycle to a level surface. With the motorcycle off, place the transmission in gear to prevent movement.

2. Identify the type of bolt or screw used on your switch housing. This is the knobby structure just outside of your brake or clutch handle housing. For newer models, you will likely need a Torx wrench (looks like a star). For older models, you may need an Allen wrench (hexagonal) or screwdriver. There may be as few as one per side or as many as three.

3. Using the wrench identified in step 2, remove the bolt(s) from the left-side (clutch) housing that wraps around the grip. Separate the two halves of the housing. Replace the bolt so you don't lose it, and wrap with shop towels to prevent damage to the parts and the motorcycle's finish.

4. Remove the bolt(s) from the right-side (brake) housing, again using the wrench identified in step 2. At this point, you will notice two wires coming out of the housing that wrap around the grip. These are the throttle wires. Take notes or digital pictures of the placement of these wires to refer to for reattachment later. Then, using needle-nose pliers, unseat them from the grip sleeve. Wrap the housing with shop towels.

5. Slide the grips off the handlebars. Depending on the handlebars, you may have to unscrew the left grip, but on stock models these usually slide off with a gentle back-and-forth motion. Once the grip is off, wrap the string around your handlebars and use a ruler to find the diameter of your handlebars. Stock handlebars are typically 1 inch, but may be as large as 2 inches if you have aftermarket handlebars.

6. Purchase the grips that are correctly sized for your motorcycle. Replace the grip on the left side, replace the housing and then reinstall the bolt(s). Slide the right grip on. Reattach the throttle cables, being careful to attach the wires in the same position they were in before. Then replace the housing and reinstall the bolt(s).

Information On American Antique Motorcycles

Harley-Davidson have been making motorcycles for more than a century.

The first known motorcycle in the United States was brought from overseas in 1895. In the same year American inventor Edward Pennington demonstrated a motorcycle he had designed. He was also credited with inventing the term "motorcycle." In the early 1900s motorcycles started being manufactured for public sale.

Indian

America's oldest motorcycle brand, the Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company, was founded in 1901. Their famous diamond framed "Indian Single" was launched in 1904. It was available in the deep red color that became synonymous with the Indian brand. At its peak in 1913, the company sold 32,000 bikes. In the 1920s the company launched its "Scout"' and "Chief" models.

Harley-Davidson

In 1901, William Harley created the blueprint for an engine to fit a conventional bicycle. In 1903, he and his friend Arthur Davidson developed a one-cylinder engine. The resulting motorized-bicycle was incapable of climbing through the Milwaukee hills without pedal assistance, and Harley and Davidson developed a bigger engine that became the first Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Purchasing

Prior to buying an antique American motorbike, you should research the history of specific bike you are interested in, by reading books, visiting specialty vintage motorcycle shows and consulting with experts. Find collectors clubs for Indians and Harleys. This will help you determine how many were made, how many are still in existence, the rarity and demand for the model and the price.

The most valuable antique motorcycles are those that have survived with their original finishes and original parts. The paint work and finishes may well have deteriorated, but this is preferable to non-original replacements by experts and serious collectors.

The next most valuable category of antique bikes are those that have been restored. These will look as new, will have been freshly painted, and will have the correct parts for that make, year and model, although they are usually not original to the bikes they are on.

Set Up A New Hd Television

If you have purchased a new HDTV and want to get the most out of your new television, you will likely have to make sure that it is set up correctly. There are several steps you need to take into account when setting up your HDTV, such as making sure everything is properly connected and you have a television service provider--cable or satellite--that offers high-definition broadcasts.

Instructions

1. Determine where in the room you want to set up your television. If possible, keep the TV away from too much direct sunlight. If you want to mount your television to the wall, you will need a wall with studs. If not, you will need a large enough TV stand to support your HDTV.

2. Plug the power cable into a surge protector. This will protect your HDTV from any sudden jolts of electricity.

3. Connect all of the devices you want to interface with your HDTV. This will likely include such things as a HD receiver and a DVD or Blu-Ray player. Connect an HDMI cable from the output slot on your HD receiver device to the HDMI input slot on your television. This is usually located on the side panel of the TV. If you are connecting a DVD or Blu-Ray player, connect another HDMI cable from the output slot of the player into another HDMI input slot on your television.

4. Turn on your television and HD receiver box. Select the input on your television to select the device from which you want to display. Your controller will likely have an input button that will allow you to scroll through various input options.

5. Configure the video output settings on your external device. If you are connecting through an HD receiver box, you will likely be able to change the resolution settings on the cable box. Choose the resolution that matches the resolution of your television. For example, if you have a 1080p (progressive scan) television, make sure the box is displaying in 1080p.

6. Change the settings on your HDTV. Factory settings on your television will likely be much different than what you prefer. This is because the settings should be set specifically for the room in which your television is located. For example, if your room has little direct sunlight, you may want to make settings brighter by increasing the backlight. On the other hand, if your room has a lot of natural sunlight, you may want to turn your backlight down low.

7. Calibrate your television's image. You can do this by using a calibration DVD. Calibration DVDs can be purchased online. This will help you determine the optimal settings for your TV in your room.

Pressure Test A Harley Davidson Fuel Tank

The most dangerous thing on a motorcycle is the gasoline.

Harley gas tanks must never leak and when they leak they must never be repaired. Leaking tanks must be scrapped and replaced. New gas tanks leak because of defective welds. If pressure testing reveals a leak in a new tank the tank should be returned to the place of purchase for a refund. Used gas tanks leak because of camouflaged collision damage or internal corrosion. Used tanks should always be stripped of paint and bead blasted before pressure testing. Gas tanks must always be empty and dry before being worked on. Pressure testing requires a reliable source of clean, dry, compressed air.

Instructions

1. Connect the air compressor to the air tank with an air hose and two air hose fittings. Regulate the pressure of the compressed air released from the air tank with an air pressure gauge. Use the regulated compressed air with a pressurized air line and detachable fittings.

2. Drop a one foot length of light chain into the gas tank through the filler opening. Shake the tank to loosen and remove any rust inside the tank. Remove the chain.

3. Turn the tank upside down and shake vigorously. Attach a blower fitting to a pressurized air line. Blast the inside of the tank with pressurized air.

4. Seal the petcock opening on the bottom of the gas tank with an air hose fitting attached to a pressurized air line. If necessary, install a fuel petcock and fit the air hose to the petcock with a hose fitting and a flat head screwdriver.

5. Prepare a solution of 50 percent dish washing detergent and 50 percent water. Adjust the air pressure leaving the compressed air tank to 15 pounds per square inch above atmosphere.

6. Seal the gas cap and pressurize the inside of the gas tank to 15 pounds per square inch above atmosphere. Paint the exterior of the gas tank with the detergent-water solution using a paint brush.

7. Look for air bubbles. Any air bubble indicates a leak and a defective gas tank.

Harley-Davidson's Road Glide is one of their flagship "Full Dress" or "Bagger" cruisers. The term refers to the sheer quantity of optional extras included on this model as standard. If an accessory can be fitted to a motorcycle, this model includes it as standard. Along with the windshield, integrated luggage and high-backed seats, the Road Glide is also one of very few motorcycles to include any sort of on-board entertainment package. Newer models also include GPS and satellite navigation as part of the same unit.

Instructions

1. Insert the ignition key and turn on the radio. The Road Glide's radio is capable of storing 40 presets. The presets should be set and saved with your favorite stations before setting off on the bike. Only the handlebar controls should be used while riding, and these are best used to scroll through the presets. Attempting to locate and fine-tune a signal while riding can be distracting, so it's a good idea to tune the radio manually to the desired frequencies and press the "Preset" button when the signal is clear.

2. Examine the cluster of controls next to the left handlebar grip. They should consist of a toggle rocker switch for the radio bands, and two sprung rocker switches that return to the center position when released. One controls the volume, the other the frequency or preset. The reason for the obviously different configurations on the switches is for simplicity. If you can feel which is which using your thumb, you don't need to look at them while riding.

3. Select "FM" using the band switch. This involves pressing the upper section of the switch. Depressing the lower half returns it to "AM." Click the vertical volume rocker switch with a series of brief pulses on the upper half, gradually increasing the volume. Holding the switch down can result in a sudden and dramatic increase in the sound level.

4. Click the horizontal rocker switch to the right. This will cause it to select the next preset or strong radio signal in the frequency band. Clicking the left side of the switch causes it to scroll downward through the band or select the previous preset.

Set Up An Hd Cable

An HD cable is a type of cable that transfers audio and video information from one device to another at high definition resolution. This produces the best possible audio and picture quality that money can buy. The proper name for these cables is "HDMI" cables, and they are often used to connect devices like high definition cable television boxes and Blu-Ray disc players to television sets. Setting up and using an HD cable is a simple process.

Instructions

1. Make sure both devices you are trying to connect can utilize HDMI. For televisions, the resolution of your unit should be either 720p or 1080p. Connecting a device to a standard definition television with an HDMI cable would be pointless as the TV would not be able to display the added picture quality. The device you are trying to connect must also have at least one HDMI port. It will be labeled appropriately.

2. Plug one end of your HD cable into an HDMI port on your television. Plug the other end into an HDMI port on the device you want to connect to your television.

3. Use your television's remote control to enter the "Settings" menu. Under the "Video" sub-menu, make sure "Input" is set to "HDMI." Simply plugging in the cable isn't enough--in order to use an HD cable you need to physically tell your television to start receiving these signals.

4. Use your secondary device's remote control to enter the "Settings" menu. Navigate to the "Video" sub-menu and make sure "Output" is set to "HDMI." Just like with your television, in order to make sure you are getting the full resolution of the HD cable you need to turn this option on in the device's menu. Once you do this both devices will be properly connected with the HD cable and will be ready to use together.
