Remove A Harley Dyna Battery

The Harley Dyna motorcycle was introduced in 2006 in five different models. Dyna motorcycles have twin engines, and to make those engines come to life, you need a charged-up battery. When the battery dies and needs changing, then this is one you can change on your own without taking it to the shop. The Harley Dyna's battery hides in an enclosed battery compartment.


Instructions


1. Remove the screw from the lower fastener of the battery cover below the seat, and put the screw in a safe place. Take off the lower fastener.


2. Grasp the cover, and pivot it outward. Disengage the slots on the cover from the projection on the battery tray by lifting the cover away.


3. Loosen the bolt of the negative ("-") battery cable with a wrench. Move the cable away from the battery.


4. Remove the positive ("+") cable by loosening the bolt. Remove the cable from the battery, and move the cable away from the battery.


5. Unclip the battery strap, and remove the battery. Now you can replace the old battery with a new one.

Instructions


1. Determine which digital audio input(s) your surround-sound receiver offers. Either coaxial or digital optical (TOSLINK) cables are required for multi-channel audio; the receiver will have inputs for one or both.


2. Connect the receiver directly to the Vizio TV or to one of the related components (DVD/Blu-Ray player or cable/satellite receiver). Many Vizio models feature a digital optical output port; the other devices will offer that and/or a coaxial output as well. Connecting directly to the TV allows for surround-sound (when available) regardless of the component being used, while connecting to one of the components provides a more direct route from the source of the sound.


3. Connect one end of the audio cable to the input of the surround-sound receiver. If using a digital optical cable, you may need to remove the plastic covering from the end of the cable or any cap or hatch protecting the input port.


4. Connect the other end of the cable to the output of the TV or video component.


5. Set the surround-sound receiver to the appropriate input, and set the audio settings of it and the other components to "Digital" if multiple settings are available. For the TV, press "Menu", "Audio Mode", then "Digital Audio Out" and select the "Dolby Digital" setting.

Change The Oil On A 2004 Harley Sportster

The Harley Davidson Sportster is one of the most popular motorcycles on the road today. Its sporty yet comfortable riding position, ample power and good looks make it the perfect bike for many riders. However, without proper maintenance, the Sportster can quickly lose its charm, leading to frustrating problems while riding, difficult starts and myriad of other issues. Learning to change your own engine oil is the first step in home motorcycle maintenance, so break out the tool box and get ready to work.


Instructions


1. Set a drain pan beneath the oil filter located to the front of the engine to catch any spilled oil. Attach an oil filter wrench to the oil filter by twisting the handle of the wrench clockwise. Turn the oil filter counterclockwise until it is loose enough to spin by hand. Remove the oil filter wrench from the oil filter, then carefully remove the filter from the bike, pouring any excess oil into the drain pan.


2. Remove the oil filler cap from the oil filler located on the left side of the bike just below the seat. This will allow oil to flow more freely out of the engine. Locate the oil drain tube behind the clutch and underneath the swing arm at the rear of the bike. Set the drain pan below it and loosen the worm clamp of the tube with a flat head screwdriver.


3. Remove the tube from its socket and allow the oil to drain out of the engine and into the drain pan. When the oil stops draining, replace the tube on the socket and re-tighten the worm-clamp using a flat head screwdriver.


4. Lubricate the O-ring of your new oil filter with a small amount of motor oil. Pour three to four ounces of oil into the filter body itself. By hand, twist the new oil filter into place where the old one was removed previously. Tighten the filter until you can no longer turn it by hand.


5. Pour three quarts of motor oil into the oil filler located below the seat on the left side of the bike. Replace the oil filler cap, then start the bike and allow it to run for a few minutes to circulate the new oil.

Upgrade The Hard Drive On An Xbox 360

Fortunately for anxious Xbox 360 owners looking for an important and necessary hard drive upgrade, upgrading the Xbox 360's drive from the standard 20GB to the 120GB hard drive unit requires only one cable, a couple of plug-ins, and a few minutes of your time. Data transfer from the 20GB to the 120GB is possible through an included data transfer kit, and you can transfer most or all of your data to the new hard drive.


Instructions


1. Purchase a new Xbox 360 hard drive (see Additional Resources). This 120GB hard drive will serve as an upgraded version to your current 20GB hard drive .


2. Power off your Xbox console that currently has the 20GB hard drive installed. Have your 120GB hard drive separate, unpacked and at the ready. Remove all accessories from your Xbox 360 console and turn it on.


3. Take one end of the data transfer cable (included in the data transfer kit, which comes standard with your 120GB hard drive) and plug it into the 120GB hard drive. Then, take the other end of the transfer cable and plug it into the USB port on the back of your Xbox 360 console that currently has the 20GB hard drive plugged into it.


4. Take the Hard Drive Transfer Disc and put it into the disc tray on the Xbox 360 console. Load the disc. This Hard Drive Transfer Disc comes standard with each Xbox 360 120GB hard drive and is not sold separately.


5. Wait for the transfer to complete. The data transfer cable will transfer the content from your 20GB hard drive to your new 120GB hard drive. This process will take a few minutes, and time varies slightly depending on how much information is stored on your 20GB hard drive. Most or all of this information will be transferred, depending on the type of data has been saved. Also, the free preloaded goodies and demo that come stored on the 120GB hard drive will remain after the data transfer.


6. Complete the hard drive upgrade. After the data transfer is completed, disconnect the data transfer kit from the back USB port of the Xbox 360 and from the back of the 120GB hard drive. Power down your Xbox 360 console. Then, remove the 20GB hard drive and plug the new 120GB hard drive in its place. Power the Xbox 360 back on. Your new hard drive is installed.

Remove A Front Wheel Road Glide

The Harley-Davidson Road Glide was introduced by the "Motor Company" as a flagship model of its touring line.


The Harley-Davidson Road Glide was introduced by the "Motor Company" as a flagship model among its touring line of motorcycles. Its frame-mounted fairing and V-twin engine allowed it to cut through the wind at high speeds on the freeway. Add to that cool, custom graphics and most enthusiasts simply went ape over the massive bike. Performing routine maintenance, however, was soon discovered to be a bit more detailed on the Road Glide than on the average Harley ride. Luckily, though, removal of the front wheel is a straight-forward task when performed correctly.


Instructions


1. Turn off the motorcycle's ignition. Block the bike so that the front wheel is elevated off of the ground.


2. Remove the two bolts securing the left disk brake caliper with a large hex wrench. Lift the caliper off of the rotor and allow it to hang loose by its brake line. Repeat the procedure for the right side disk brake caliper.


3. Insert a large screwdriver or metal rod through the hole in the front wheel axle on the right side of the bike. Hold the rod steady, preventing the axle from turning. Remove the axle nut on the left side of the wheel with an SAE socket wrench.


4. Loosen but do not remove the two slider cap nuts on the right side of the axle with an SAE open-ended wrench.


5. Tap out the axle with a rubber mallet. Drop the wheel from within the front forks and remove it to a work bench or other safe area.

Vortec 5.3 engine power can be increased several times over with proper parts selection.


The best thing about Chevrolet's 5.3-liter Vortec engines is the adaptability of the block to accept performance parts. These engines, present in Chevrolet's line of pickup trucks and SUVs, can be built into LS-series engines with the addition of a few off-the shelf GM parts, or they can be built into powerful engines in their own right with aftermarket parts. There's no end to the variations that exist in making the 5.3-liter Vortec faster, more powerful and more efficient. The gains are only limited by your imagination and your wallet.


Instructions


Low-Cost Aftermarket Performance Parts


1. Install the basics to begin transforming the 5.3-liter Vortec engine. A high-flow cold air intake is the most basic modification necessary to increase the speed of these engines.


2. Install a high-flow cat-back exhaust system. This device bolts into place with common hand tools such as a socket set and can be installed in as little as an afternoon.


3. Install a reprogrammed computer. The computer automatically adjusts for variances in the air/fuel ratio, always bringing the ratio back to the ideal specified by the factory. A reprogrammed computer idealizes the air/fuel ratio to account for higher-octane gas, more air into the combustion chamber and faster exhaust scavenging. A reprogrammed computer is vital to build horsepower in computer-controlled engines.


Mid-Priced Aftermarket Performance Parts


4. Install a set of ceramic-coated headers to further improve exhaust efficiency. Headers from the factory are always built to conform to two parameters: efficiency of exhaust removal from the engine and low cost to construct. Aftermarket companies have the luxury of working without cost constraints, and so they can be far more lavish in the design of their headers.


5. Replace the intake manifold with an LS1 unit. The LS1 engine intakes were built primarily for the Camaro, Corvette, and Firebird, but have since been retrofitted to the 5.3L Vortec engine. These intakes require changes to the air intake, but can increase horsepower dramatically when used in conjunction with Chevrolet's Vortec cylinder heads. Use GM performance products parts for the best fit and finish.


6. Upgrade the valve train of the 5.3L Vortec with stiffer springs, roller-type rocker arms, and lightweight push rods. If you are unfamiliar with this process, it is employ the services of an engine specialist, because this procedure requires the removal of sensitive engine parts and should not be undertaken by inexperienced shade tree mechanics.


High-Cost Engine Modifications


7. Install a forced-air induction system. Forced induction systems generally produce the greatest horsepower gain for the money spent, but typically may return relatively little in vehicle resale value. A typical supercharger installation can cost as much as $5,000 or more, depending on how much engine work is required.


8. Install a nitrous oxide or methanol injection system. For advanced racers and custom builders, nitrous oxide added to any 5.3L Vortec engine produces prodigious power gains. Forced-induction systems benefit greatly from the additional cooling provided by methanol injection, as well.


9. Rebuild the engine with increased compression and displacement. Full engine work typically involves stripping the engine of all its primary parts, such as the pistons and crankshaft, camshaft, and cylinder heads. The heads are ported for greater combustion chamber efficiency, and lighter, more efficient parts are added to reduce stress on the engine. A crankshaft adjustment can increase an engine's displacement while machining the cylinder heads increases the pressure at which the engine fires, producing a more powerful spark. This set of engine improvements should never be undertaken by a novice, and can easily eclipse the price paid for the entire vehicle and all the modifications done thus far. It is also the single best way to build power in V8 engines, in particular the Chevrolet Vortec 5.3L.

Remove A Fairing Flhtr

The bat wing on the front of this motorcycle is called a "fairing."


The procedure for removing both the inner and outer fairings on any Big Twin, Large Forked, Heavy, Touring Harley, which is what FLHT means, is both complicated and straightforward. The outer fairing and windshield come off first. The ignition must be partially removed. Obvious sections of the electrical harness must be unplugged. The hand controls must be removed from behind the fairing. Then you can finally pry the bat wing off the front of your motorcycle.


Instructions


Remove Outer Fairing and Windshield


1. Hang towels over the front fender to protect the paint and chrome. Straddle the front fender and loosen the outer fairing screws just below the windshield with a Torx head socket and ratchet.


2. Step to the rider's side of the fairing and pull out the two inner fairing screws over the wind deflectors with a Torx head socket and ratchet.


3. Turn the handlebars completely right. Loosen and pull out the outer fairing screw under the right fairing cap with a Torx head socket, socket extension and a ratchet.


4. Turn the handlebars completely left. Loosen and pull out the outer fairing screw under the left fairing cap with a Torx head socket, socket extension and a ratchet.


5. Push the outer fairing forward. Squeeze the two tabs outside the headlight housing and disconnect wiring harness plug connector behind the headlight.


6. Pull the outer fairing and the headlight off the motorcycle by hand without knocking the windshield off the motorcycle.


7. Set the outer fairing down and pluck the windshield off the front of the bike. Remove and save all pieces.


8. Lift the fairing with the headlamp assembly off the motorcycle. Lift the windshield off the bike.


Remove Ignition


9. Disconnect the male and female parts of the directional signal and passing lamp connectors. Loosen the passing lamp brackets from the fork brackets with a Torx head socket a ratcheting socket wrench.


10. Remove the passing lamp from the forks.


11. Insert the motorcycle key in the motorcycle ignition. Turn the key to "unlock" and set the ignition knob to "access."


12. Push the catch tab on the bottom left of the ignition knob with a flathead screwdriver. Push down and turn the key from 5 o'clock to 3 o'clock. Pull the knob off the ignition.


13. Remove the switch nut from the nut stud with a ratcheting socket wrench, socket extension and hex socket.


Remove Hand Controls


14. Remove the chrome trim from the inner fairing by hand and set aside


15. Pull up the rubber boot that covers the clutch cable adjuster assembly on the left side of the bike. Turn the long clutch cable adjuster jam nut and the clutch cable adjuster nut in opposite directions with two open end wrenches.


16. Completely loosen the clutch cable by turning the clutch cable adjuster nut with your fingers.


17.Remove the pivot pin retaining ring from the pivot pin on the bottom of the clutch hand control assembly with a flathead screwdriver. Pull the pivot pin out of the top of the assembly with needle nose pliers.


18. Unfasten the clutch hand control assembly with a Torx head socket and ratchet. Remove the clutch hand control from the clutch hand control assembly.


19. Lift the clutch control pin from the clutch cable. Push the clutch cable and through the weatherized hole in the inner fairing.


20. Stick a 5/32 inch thick cardboard insert between the front brake hand control and the front brake hand control bracket to protect the rubber boot and plunger on the front brake hand control stoplight switch and plunger.


21. Loosen the switch housing and master cylinder screws with a Torx head driver and ratcheting socket wrench. Remove the switch housing and master cylinder.


22. Slip the throttle off the handlebars with the help of a flathead screwdriver. Unhook the two throttle cables from the cable housing.


23. Push the two throttle cables through the weatherized hole in the inner fairing.


Remove Inner Fairing


24. Disconnect the cigarette lighter contacts.


25. Disconnect the right and left speaker adapters from the inner fairing with a Torx head socket, a socket extension and a ratcheting socket wrench.

Unplug the fuel gauge and voltmeter male and female wiring harness plugs. Loosen the four screws that hold the inner fairing to the fairing bracket with a Torx head driver, a socket extension and a ratcheting socket wrench.

Pull the inner fairing and fairing bracket apart with your hands to separate them both from the mounting pins.

Lift the fairing bracket and inner fairing straight up. Pull the fairing bracket and inner fairing apart and remove the inner fairing.

2. Connect an HDMI cable into the "HD Out" port on the Comcast receiver, then plug the other end of the cable into the "HDMI In" port on the television.


3. Power on the TV and the Comcast receiver. Select the HDMI input from the television menu and the programming appears on the screen. However, you may notice the content is not in full HD yet. This is because you must still adjust some of the receiver's HD settings.


4. Push the "Menu" button on the Comcast receiver, then select "Options." Choose the "Aspect Ratio" option, then select either "720" or "1080," depending on what the television's resolution is. Accept the changes and the programming appears in full HD

What Is The Last Year Of The Harley Carburetor

The classic HD configuration could be under threat.


Harley-Davidson no longer produces any models with carburetors. While innovation is seldom met with universal approval -- chain- to belt-drive being a prime example -- those who were skeptical of the phasing in of electronic fuel injection, or EFI, had at least one sound reason for disapproval: Faulty carburetors can often be diagnosed and repaired on the side of the road, while narrow-band O2 sensors and a sealed "black box" brain cannot.


Standard Harley Carbs


Motorcycling lore has it that the very first machine produced by William Harley and Arthur Davidson used a modified tomato can for a carburetor. This was followed by units produced, in sequence, by Schebler, Linkert, Tillotson, Zenith-Bendix and Keihin. Of course, numerous aftermarket companies have produced countless carburetors to fit Harley-Davidson motorcycles since racing and personalization began. The Keihin CV CVK 40 was fitted to Sportsters from 1988 and to the big twins from 1990. Given the phasing out of carburetors, then, the CVK 40 is probably the last carburetor that will ever be fitted to a production Harley.


The Last Years of the Harley-Davidson Carburetor


Throughout the years, Harley-Davidson paired a carburetor with every engine the company produced, ranging from the older knucklehead, panhead and shovelhead engines to the newer Evolution and Twin Cam engines. However, fuel injection was offered as an option for Harley-Davidson's popular FL-series Touring motorcycles starting with the 1996 model year, but in 2007 became standard equipment on all Twin Cam engine models, which now included all Touring, Dyna and Softail models. Only the Sportster series remained old school and retained the carbureted Evolution engine. For the 2008 model year, that series also lost carburetors in favor of Harley-Davidson's Electronic Sequential Port Fuel-Injection system. The era of the carburetor had ended.

Many purists, custom builders and hobbyists keen on nostalgia or emulating carb-fueled race bikes retrofit carburetors to engines intended to run on EFI. For this to be practical, it is important to know which model and year of the engine ran with traditional aspiration, so that the retrofitted carb can be worked on properly. For instance, somebody intending to convert a 2008 FXST to carb would need the Service Manual and the Parts Manual for the last year that Softails were made before EFI became standard; in that instance, it would be model year 2007.


Carburetors vs. Fuel Injection


Harley-Davidson, as well as the people who ride the company's products, is resistant to change. That said, there are pros and cons to each side of the carb vs. EFI debate. New generations of Harley purchasers are by definition younger, making them more tech-savvy and less resentful of change. While carburetion is a simpler system and there are no electronics packages to require expert mechanical attention, sophisticated, well-calibrated EFI systems generate more peak power through better fuel management. The phasing out of carburetors was, at least in part, due to pressure exerted on the factory by the Environmental Protection Agency. Fuel-air mixture is far more tightly controlled by fuel injection, resulting in decreased emissions. Based on this factor alone, EFI is here to stay.

Improve The Resolution For My Wallpaper Saver On My Computer

After you have downloaded an inspirational photo or graphic to your computer and configured it to appear as your desktop wallpaper or screen saver, you may be disappointed to discover the artwork appears too small, fuzzy or skewed out of proportion. You can often adjust properties in your video card to make your favorite art instantly appear sharper and in the proper proportions on your desktop monitor or laptop screen.


Instructions


1. Click "Start," "Control Panel" and select "Display" in Windows XP. For Vista/Win7, select "Appearance & Personalization/Display."


2. Click "Settings." Examine the current settings for "Color Quality." Set color quality to the highest "bit" factor choice offered. On a Windows XP/Vista/Win7 machine, this will be "32 bit" or "Highest 32 bit." Click "Apply" to allow the change to take place. Do not click "OK" yet.


3. Adjust the "Screen Resolution." Experiment with resolution settings until you find the view that offers the sharpest images and appears to "fit" your monitor screen dimensions best. Generally, higher settings like "1152x864 pixels" produce clearer pictures, but objects will appear smaller. If you are visually challenged you may find these higher resolution settings make labels and icons too small for comfort. Find the compromise setting that is both sharp and clear and yet large enough to be visible without straining your eyes. Click "Apply" and then "OK."


4. Reopen the "Display" properties section. Tab to "Desktop." A list of all the graphics that are available for use as wallpaper on the desktop will appear. Click on your favorite wallpaper and preview it. Click on "Position" and experiment with the looks offered for the "Center," "Stretch" and "Tile" options. The Center position usually provides the crisper view of the artwork but will often not "fill" the screen. The "Stretch" option will make the picture completely fill the screen, but if the original artwork was small in size or was originally created in a low resolution, this "stretching" will produce a blurry picture. You can sometimes improve the quality of a piece of art by editing the file in a photo editor like Photoshop or Picasa. Attempt to make the picture larger in the editor and then set the resolution higher, such as "600 dpi." Save the edited graphic; saving the picture in the ".gif" format, instead of the ".jpg" format, may improve the display resolution.


5. Return to the Windows Display/Desktop property section, click "Browse" and load the edited graphic into your wallpaper gallery. Experiment again with this artwork to see if the "Center" or "Stretch" views are improved.


6. Adjust any screen saver art in the same manner. Take the edited graphic you may have produced in the previous step and make a copy of the graphic, renaming the extension to ".scr." Save this scr file to your desktop temporarily.


7. Right mouse click on "Start" and select "Explore." Drag and drop your new screen saver file from the Desktop onto the C:/Windows/System32 folder. This will load the graphic into the screen saver program.


8. Return to the Display control panel, and tab to "Screen saver." Find the new screen saver in the menu and select it. Test the new screen saver for acceptable resolution.

Attach A Guardian Bell To Your Motorcycle

Many bikers use guardian bells as a means of protection from evil spirits, or gremlins. Legend states that when gremlins try to grab onto your moving bike, they will be distracted by the ringing of the bell. Their dislike of the sound of the bell causes them to cover their ears and let go of the bike. These bells are often given as gifts and are symbolic of biker legend, even to nonbelievers. If you receive a guardian bell, you'll need to know properly attach it to your bike.


Instructions


1. Find an appropriate place near the bottom of your bike to hang your guardian bell, where it will not interfere with moving wheels or other parts. One good place is the peg where your feet rest.


2. Hold the bell up to the peg or part of the frame where you will place it. Thread a zip tie or leather strap through the bell's hang loop.


3. Wrap the zip tie or leather strap around the frame or peg. Tie off the leather strap with a double-knot, or insert the tapered end of the zip tie into the slot on the square end, and pull tightly.


4. Cut off any excess strap or zip tie with scissors.

Raleigh Chopper Colors

Raleigh has been making bicycles for more than a century.


The Raleigh Bicycle Company started making bicycles in Nottingham, England in 1887, but it was not until 1939 that the company's first bicycle factory opened. Key in reviving the company's fortunes in the 1970s was the Raleigh Chopper for children ages 8 and older. It featured a car-like, frame-mounted gear stick, long padded seat and backrest, 16-inch front wheel, 20-inch rear wheel and and high-rise handlebars. The Chopper went out of production in the late '70s and was reintroduced in 2004 and again in 2010.


Red


Infra Red with yellow decals was the first color for Choppers and has become the classic color associated with them. This color became Hot Red in 1979. According to the Everything Bicycling website, the Chopper's frame was built first and then the frame number was stamped on it. It was then booth-painted. Choppers were painted in batches of one color, but the frame number is not an indication of color. Once the paint had dried, decals were attached, dependent upon the color of the frame and front forks.


Silver


Built in 1976 and 1977 to commemorate Queen Elizabeth's Silver Jubilee in 1977, the Raleigh Chopper Special Edition has become the single most sought-after Chopper model, because of its silver color, which set it apart from other Choppers. The model was phased out after 1977.


Black


With Chopper sales slowing in 1978, the company also added a black with prismatic graphics Chopper to the range, which continued and sold well right until the end of Chopper production in 1982. Between 1979 and 1982, the color range was limited to Hot Red (formerly known as Infra Red), Silver (formerly known as Quick Silver and later Pearl Silver), Space Blue and Black.


Pink


The girl's model Chopper in Sharp Pink was a failure and was discontinued quickly. Still, this model reportedly is the second most sought-after model because of its very limited production period and rarity.

Brakes on a sports car


A car's braking system is one of its most important components. Good quality brakes are not only necessary for performance but also essential for safe driving. Brakes require occasional maintenance, including the replacement of brake pads, which are designed to wear down with use. Ceramic brake pads are an attractive alternative for many drivers to the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) pads that came on the car when it was new.


History


The use of ceramic brake pads is a relatively new phenomenon. For many years automakers offered new cars with brake pads that were either semi-metallic or composed of an asbestos-based compound. As health concerns grew around the use of asbestos, semi-metallic or low-metallic pads became the standard for most automakers. Ceramic and other materials were developed by aftermarket auto part manufacturers. Ceramic brake pads were first offered for Japanese cars in the 1990s and today are available for most makes and models of cars, trucks and SUVs.


Construction


Ceramic brake pads are composed mostly of ceramic fibers. These fibers, along with a small amount of metal, are held together with a bonding agent that gives the pads their structure. OEM brake mads are usually semi-metallic and contain various metals such as steel wool, shredded metal wire and iron powder. Other metals are used as well, along with a filler that bonds the metallic components together. Ceramic brake pads are softer and more consistent while semi-metallic pads are harder and contain more variations.


Function


Despite different compositions, ceramic and OEM brake pads function in much the same way. Brake pads are used on disc brakes, which work by pinching a spinning metal rotor between two pads attached to a caliper. The caliper closes when the brake pedal is pressed, causing friction (and heat) between the pad and the rotor to slow or stop the vehicle. Most modern cars use disc brakes in the front wheels, where more stopping power is needed, while using less expensive drum brakes in the rear. Increasingly, automakers are offering cars with four-wheel disc brakes.


Drawbacks


Ceramic and semi-metallic brake pads each have disadvantages that drivers should be aware of. Ceramic pads are softer and therefore wear down more quickly. They also cost more to replace. Semi-metallic brake pads are harder and therefore can cause the rotor itself to wear down more quickly. They also produce more noise, since the metal shards they contain will eventually come to the surface of the pad and come into contact with the spinning rotor. This noise will continue until the shard in the pad, or the rotor itself, is worn down sufficiently.


Benefits


Both ceramic and semi-metallic OEM brake pads offer certain advantages over other types. Because they are soft, ceramic pads do not damage rotors and provide smooth, even friction during braking. Ceramic pads are also clean and produce less dust as they wear down. Semi-metallic pads offer the advantage of low cost, which is one of the main reasons they are used on most new vehicles. They also wear down slowly and provide good heat transfer away from the rotor. This helps prevent warping, which can occur when the rotor is exposed to excessive heat.

Remove Front Coil Springs

Springs work with the suspension system to help control the bumps of the road. Like any other element of the vehicle, however, they can wear out over time, and a car with old springs will definitely drive less smoothly than one with new coil springs. Removing front coil springs isn't technically difficult, but it can be very dangerous if not undertaken properly. Only experienced mechanics should attempt to remove front coil springs.


Instructions


1. Set a floor jack beneath the front suspension and boost the car about 1 foot off the ground. A hydraulic lift in a professional mechanic's shop works even better than floor jacks, if you have access to one.


2. Place a pair of floor jacks beneath the frame rails and slowly lower the vehicle onto them until the springs are fully supported. This step is only recommended for experienced mechanics and can be skipped if necessary.


3. Remove the lug nuts from one of the front tires with a wrench--setting them aside somewhere safe so that you can keep track of them--and take the wheel off the tire.


4. Carefully unbolt and remove the shocks if necessary. Use a ratchet or a wrench to disconnect the bolts and slide them off the assembly. Keep track of the bolts and washers when you do so, so that you can replace them later.


5. Insert a coil spring compressor into the spring and tighten it into place. Technically, the compressor serves the same purpose as the jacks in Step 2. However, springs can be extremely dangerous if not handled carefully. The redundancy of jack and compressor provides an extra level of safety for the mechanic


6. Detach the coil from the remainder of the apparatus. Specifics will vary by make and model of the vehicle, but in most cases you'll need to remove the lower nut and washer with a torque wrench, move the axle carefully away from the spring, and then disconnect the top of the spring by either unscrewing the upper coil end or detaching the retaining clip holding it in place. Consult your owner's manual for the exact layout of your vehicle.


7. Set the new spring in its mount, using a hammer or crowbar if necessary. Reconnect the retaining clip or top bolt and tighten it into place with a wrench or screw. Then reconnect the lower nut and washer with a wrench, making sure that all components are tight.


8. Reconnect the shock absorbers, then return the wheel to its position and tighten the lug nuts. Check to ensure that the bolts and fasteners are in place and have the proper torque before proceeding.


9. Repeat the process on the remaining tire.


10. Raise the car again, remove the floor jacks, and then slowly lower the car to the ground.

Columbia ParCars are small, electric- or gas-powered vehicles, mostly made for commercial use. Columbia only had the 1-3/16 inch by 35-1/4 inch drive belt for ParCars from 1982 until 1991. If the drive belt is ever damaged, you will need to find a 1-3/16 inch by 35-1/4 inch belt to put into your engine.

Widening the Hips


1. Supplement your diet with foods rich in protein and carbohydrates. Eliminate junk foods such as chips, sweets and soda. 2. Do about 10 reps of side lunges. Step out to your side about two feet with your right leg and keep your foot there. Bend your knee and go down into a lunge position. Your left leg should remain straight. Use your hips to push yourself back up, but do not pop your foot back to a standing position with your feet together. Your feet should stay in the same position throughout the entire exercise. When you come back to the top, lunge out with your left leg about two feet out. Repeat the lunge with your left leg. Do this exercises while holding your 5 lb dumbbells for increased resistance.


3. Do abduction-isolation style exercises using your dumbbells. Stand with your feet shoulder width apart. Hold one dumbbell in your left hand, and hold onto something solid with your right hand. Rest the dumbbell against your thigh. Quickly raise your left leg to the side as high as you can using your hip muscles, and hold for about 5 to 10 seconds. Do about 8 to 10 reps on your left leg, and switch to the right leg.


4. Do sideways treadmill walking. Set your treadmill to a slow pace with a bit of an incline for added resistance. Face to your left and step onto the treadmill with your right leg and cross over with your left leg. Develop a steady pace and hold on to the rails for your protection. Do the sideways walking exercise for about 10 to 20 minutes.


5. Do these exercises as a program about 3 to 4 times a week. Add more reps and weights as you become accustomed to the routine.

4. Use a commercial laptop cooler. A laptop cooler pad is an external USB powered fan that serves as a base for your laptop. If your laptop generates a lot of heat, even with a clean cooling system, a laptop cooler will extend the life of your laptop.

Replace An Impeller On A Mercruiser Alpha One

This impeller is critical to the operation of a sterndrive.


The MerCruiser Alpha One Stern Drive is one of the most popular and reliable power plants in use for recreational boating. With proper care and maintenance, the Alpha One can last a lifetime. One of the maintenance items that can be performed by the average boating enthusiast and do-it-yourselfer is replacing the impeller in the lower unit. This device is critical to the operation of the sterndrive, and running the engine with a bad impeller will cause permanent damage.


Instructions


Remove the Lower Unit


1. Place the gear shift in the forward position and turn the propeller counterclockwise until the unit clicks into forward gear. Remove the propeller and take time to inspect the prop shaft for damage or fishing line that may have wrapped around it.


2. Mark the position of the trim tab. Remove the Allen screw that holds the trim tab in place and remove the trim tab.


3. Beginning at the front of the housing, remove the hex nuts that secure the lower unit to the upper gear housing. Use caution--the lower unit is heavy and will drop free as the nuts are removed.


Replace the Impeller


4. Remove the O-ring from the drive shaft and the water tube guide. Remove the screw and nuts that secure the water pump housing and remove the housing. Using a flat-blade screwdriver, pry the old impeller up and out of the water pump base. Take care not to lose the impeller drive key that fits into the drive shaft.


5. Use a dab of grease to hold the impeller drive key in place on the drive shaft and slide the new impeller down the drive shaft. Be sure to engage the drive key properly. Turn the drive shaft clockwise to get the housing over the impeller.


6. Secure the pump housing with the screw and nuts. Take care not to over-tighten. Install a new O-ring and the water tube guide.


Install the Lower Unit


7. Lift the lower unit into position. Ensure that the splines on the drive shaft and the shift shaft engage properly with their counterparts in the upper gear housing. Start the hex nuts, but do not tighten yet.


8. Start the Allen screw into the trim tab, then tighten the hex nuts a little at a time until the lower unit is secure. Align the trim tab with the marks you made earlier and tighten the Allen screw. Replace the propeller.


9. Supply water to the water intake on the lower unit and start the engine to test for proper water flow.

Troubleshoot A Cox Cable Reception

Inspect the coaxial cable connections to troubleshoot Cox cable reception.


Cox cable TV service gives its subscribers access to more channels than a standard aerial antenna connection, but when problems occur, your viewing experience can be ruined. Most cable TV troubleshooting problems can be solved by changing settings or securing connections between the cable box and TV set. Knowing troubleshoot your Cox cable connection allows you to correct problems and enjoy watching your programs again.


Instructions


No Picture and No Power


1. Turn on the TV. Check the channel to make sure the TV is set to either channel 3 or 4. Make sure all the connections are tight and correct. Unplug the power cord from the TV from the cable box and plug it into an electrical wall outlet, then turn the power on.


2. Press the "Menu" button from the Cox remote and use the arrow buttons to navigate to the "Set: AC" option. Navigate to the "On With Settop" option. Press "Select" and then press "Exit."


3. Turn off the cable box. Unplug the TV from the electrical wall outlet and plug it back into the outlet on the cable box. Press the "Cable" or "TV" button to turn your TV on and off.


No Sound


4. Press the "Mute" button on the remote to make sure it is not on. If "Mute" is displayed on the TV when you press the "Mute" button, press it again until "Mute" leaves the screen.


5. Press the volume buttons on the remote to make sure the volume is turned up. Stand closer to the speakers and listen for sound.


6. Make sure the TV is on. Make sure the TV is set to either channel 3 or 4 and that all the connections are correct and tight.


Remote Control Does Not Work


7. Press the "Power" button and see if the light at the top of the remote turns red. If the light does not turn on, replace the batteries with new ones.


8. Point the remote control directly at the cable box when changing channels. Do not point the remote at the TV, it's the cable box that needs to receive the signal from the remote.


9. Make sure the remote is properly programmed. Call Cox customer service for programing new equipment since equipment is supposed to already be programed when you receive it.

Service 1991 Harley Front Forks

The forks are the long tubes on the front of this V-Rod.


In 1991, Harley-Davidson shipped motorcycles with two radically different styles of forks. Springer Softail models shipped with "springer" forks, or what old-timers call "new style springer" forks. The ones Harley shipped include two exposed coil springs and a shock absorber. Most of the motorcycles Harley shipped in 1991, though, had telescoping tube forks of several widths and tube diameters. These forks are hydraulic shock absorbers, and the only service Harley recommends is that you change the fork oil every 20,000 miles. There are a half dozen methods for changing fork oil in these forks; this is a method of which Harley-Davidson approves.


Instructions


1. Loosen the fork cap on top of the left fork with a 1-3/8 inch open-end wrench or a large adjustable wrench. Remove the fork cap, washer and O-ring.


2. Remove the drain plug on the bottom, side or back of the fork slider assembly with a Phillips head screwdriver. Drain the fork oil into a pan.


3. Coat the drain plug threads with Teflon paste. Replace the plug into the drain hole and tighten with a Phillips head screwdriver.


4. Measure the correct weight and amount of fork oil, as specified in the owner's manual or shop manual, for your motorcycle into a pint measuring cup. Most 1991 Harleys will use about 11 ounces of 10-weight oil.


5. Stick a funnel into the top of the fork; pour the measured amount of oil into the funnel.


6. Reinstall the O-ring, washer and fork cap. Tighten the cap wrench securely with a 1-/38 inch open-end or adjustable wrench.


7. Repeat all these steps for the right fork.

What Are Ccs On A Motorcycle

With so many options, models and engine sizes available, shopping for your first motorcycle can be an intimidating task. An easy way to determine how much dike you can handle is to examine how many CCs a bike's motor has. But don't be swayed into the "bigger is better" attitude, as choosing a bike that is beyond your skill level can be more trouble than it's worth.


Determining CCs


"CCs"--or cubic centimeters--are a term of measurement used to measure the total volume, or displacement, of the cylinders of a motorcycle's engine. Generally speaking, the larger the displacement, the faster or more powerful the motorcycle will be. For example, a 250cc single cylinder dirt bike will fill with 250cc of air/fuel mixture before compressing.


Displacement equals power


As the cylinders fill with the mixture of air and fuel, combustion begins forcing the motor's pistons through the revolution, propelling the motorcycle forward. With a larger displacement motor, a larger amount of air/fuel is required, producing more force.


Benefits and Limitations


While the benefits of a larger displacement motorcycle are increased power and speed, the motorcycle will weigh more, consuming more fuel in the process. On the other hand, smaller displacement motorcycles lack power, but are economical and practical for commuting.


The Cubic Inch


Generally used to measure displacement in automobiles, the cubic inch (or ci) is used by Harley-Davidson and other American motorcycle manufacturers to denote displacement. The Twin Cam 88 cubic-inch engine (or 1,450cc) is the largest motor produced by Harley-Davidson.


Beginner's Bikes


Moped, scooters, and youth dirt bikes generally are in the 50cc to 125cc and normally don't require a motorcycle license. The most popular dirt bikes and some light duty street bikes are available between 150cc and 250cc. Most U.S. States require a 150cc or larger engine to be able to operate a bike on a highway. Bikes with 500cc engines allow for a balance between performance and practicality and are suited for commuting and first-time riders.


Intermediate/Expert Bikes


Motorcycles from 600cc to 1,000cc are commonly seen in--but not limited to--sport bikes. Most bikes in this category are better suited to intermediate and advanced riders. Bikes with 1,000cc and higher are not recommended for an inexperienced rider; high-displacement bikes are generally used for touring or high performance.

Where to Find Them


Purchasing on online auction sites greatly increases the likelihood of being victimized by a counterfeiter. Izod does not sell direct to independent re-sellers. Appearance


Certain hallmarks of counterfeit items are called "tells." These easy-to-spot clues reveal fake garments, watches and purses. Izod is an international brand sold in the U.S. Most often, this European influence is reflected in the sizing information on the tags. Izod shirt labels showing "S," "M" or "L" are counterfeit items. Again, only Sport Lacoste differs from the numerical sizing scheme. Most important, there is only a single tag on authentic pieces. Price tags also have a hole punched on the lower left side of the tag surrounded with an octagonal dot. Fakes have round dots.


Manufacturing Locations


Examine the location of origin when suspecting a fake Izod. Real Lacoste shirts are made in France, Morocco or Peru. Very often fakes have an Asian or Indian place of origin, immediately identifying the piece as a forgery. Many fakes also have Argentina as a place of origin, close enough to Peru and in a similar geographic location to cause confusion. Better fakes have origin information such as "Made in Peru Designed in France."

Replace Softail Drive Belt

The drive belt on a Harley Softail is connected to the rear wheel and the transmission. If the drive belt is damaged or broken, the bike will not run properly. Replacing the drive belt yourself can save considerable time and money. With the correct tools and knowledge, almost any Harley owner can replace the drive belt in around two hours. You can buy the tools and replacement belt at any Harley dealership.


Instructions


1. Raise the Softail off the ground using the motorcycle stand. Remove the rear axle nut using the pliers. Tap the axle rod out using the push rod and hammer.


2. Push the Softail's rear wheel forward and remove the drive belt from the sprocket. Remove the cover plate from the side of the transmission and pull the belt off the transmission.


3. Place the new belt onto the transmission. Place the belt onto the rear wheel sprocket. Place the rear wheel onto the frame and replace the axle rod the opposite of the way that you removed it.


4. Pull the rear wheel back until the tension markings on the swing arm line up with the markings on the rear wheel. Replace and tighten the rear wheel nut and lower the bike to the ground.

The Best Sidecar Bikes

The history of sidecar motorcycles date back to the military.


Motorcycle sidecars are separate seating areas that allow riders to carry an extra passenger without having them ride behind them on the seat. These sidecars have third wheels and typically sit low to the ground alongside the rider. According to the Sidecar Industry Council, while a few manufacturers make motorcycles with built-in sidecars, the majority of sidecar options available in North America are separate units that are mounted onto the motorcycle with aftermarket parts.


Standalone Sidecar Motorcycles


Citing a declining interest from consumers, Harley-Davidson announced in July 2010 that it was ending production of its sidecar motorcycles, with 2011 models being the final year that sidecars will be offered as a factory option. Harley-Davidson's exit from the market left Russian company Ural as the only major producer of standalone sidecar motorcycles in the American market as of November 2010.


Ural model lines available as of November 2010 include both one-wheel road and two-wheel dual sport models. All 2010 Ural models featured a 749 cc, OHV-cooled dual cylinder, four-stroke boxer engine with an electronic ignition and manual transmission. The Autoblog website praised the Patrol model for its ruggedness and durability, as it survived a heavy crash without any damages.


Boutique Sidecar Rigs


Companies such as Liberty Sidecars in Seattle, Washington created custom sidecars or sidecars in limited production runs. Liberty Sidecars are made in a small batch every month, with hand-welded features and fitted trim. Color matching is also available to ensure that the sidecar's color is identical to the color of the motorcycle.


Liberty Sidecars are designed to fit on many popular Harley-Davidson models and are a reproduction of sidecars produced from 1937 to 1966. They feature a composite fiberglass body and fender, classic leaf springs and independent trailing arm suspension. They weigh 235 lbs. and are 78 inches long with 20 inches of seat width. As of November 2010, unpainted base sidecars from Liberty were available for $5,495.


Retro Sidecar Rigs


The Euro sidecar rig produced by Canadian company Cozy is modeled on the Steib LS200 introduced by German manufacturer Steib. The canoe-nosed sidecar is designed to have a retro look and feel. It has a rubber-mounted body and torsion bar axle chassis suspension, compared to the more modern shock absorber suspension found on the company's Rocket Model. It is 75 inches long and 69 inches wide and offers passengers 16 inches of seat width and up to 46 inches of leg room. As of November 2010, it was available for a manufacturer's suggestion retail price of $2,995.

Remove Sportster Baffles

Thunder On the Road


Harley-Davidson Sportster owners love the compact design of their bike, but many wish it had a big-bike sound. According to certified Harley-Davidson mechanic and Sportster owner Benny Miller, removing the baffles from the exhaust pipes will turn that distinctive Sportster purr into a full-throated roar. It requires only a few steps to remove the baffles using tools that can often be rented at the local auto parts store.


Instructions


1. Secure the pilot bearing attachment loosely to the threaded end of the blind hole puller while keeping the claw end closed. Place the claw end of the pilot bearing attachment inside the exhaust pipe so that the notches on the claw line up with the open louvers on the baffle. Keep the top of the pilot bearing attachment's adjustment rod within reach.


2. Turn the rod clockwise to open the claw until two notches on the claw catch in the open louvers of the baffle. Continue to turn the handle of the pilot bearing attachment until it is as tight as possible.


3. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screw on the underside of the exhaust pipe holding the baffle in place.


4. Grasp the sliding weight on the rod of the blind hole puller. Slide the weight down the rod until it gently touches the exhaust pipe then slam the weight towards the handle brace at the other end of the rod.


5. Repeat Step 4 until the baffle pulls loose from the exhaust pipe. The continuous hammering pressure of the weight will eventually pull even a tightly-fitted baffle free. Using gloves, pull the baffle out of the pipe and discard.

Kayak Fishing In Monterey Bay

The waters of Monterey Bay, California, are open to those fishing from boats, including kayaks. However, fishermen are bound by the regulations of the California Department of Fish and Game and specific rules for the Monterey-South Central Management Area.


Species Available


The California Department of Fish and Game reports the Monterey Bay area as having open seasons on rockfish, cabezon, kelp greenlings, rock greenlings, leopard shark, spiny dogfish, flatfish, halibut, seabass, sturgeon, and other species. The only closed seasons are on Dungeness crab and abalone. Other seasons may close early if harvest guidelines are met.


Licenses, Stamps and Report Cards


Kayak fishers over the age of 16 are required to have a valid California fishing license. The Sport Ocean Enhancement Stamp is not needed to fish in Monterey Bay. It's required only when fishing south of Point Arguello. If you are taking sturgeon or pointy lobster from Monterey Bay, you will need a report card specific to that species.


Restrictions


Fishing from a kayak is legal for licensed fishermen, as is diving from a kayak for spearfishing. However, it is illegal for a kayaker to help another fishermen on the shore take a fish. Also, if you are spearfishing, no other type of fishing gear is allowed in the kayak.

Adjust The Clutch In A Ford Mustang

There is more than one reason to adjust the clutch in your Mustang; the clutch may be worn; the pedal feels "mushy"; you may experience difficult when you shift; or, you may not like the point at which the clutch engages. Make sure you adjust the clutch while the engine is not running and the Mustang is in neutral.


Instructions


1. Try to lift the clutch of your Mustang with your toe while you sit in the driver's seat. This is the simplest way of adjusting your clutch. This simple action actuates the "self-adjusting mechanism" for your clutch, and is quite effective if your clutch is wearing normally.


2. Look for the quadrant in the engine bay where the ratchet assembly on the clutch pedal's rod is located in the Mustang. Push what looks like a hook upwards. This will turn the ratchet assembly counter-clockwise, which will shorten the clutch cable. Do only one click at a time then test out how the clutch pedal feels before adjusting it more. If you don't like the adjustment you made, reset the clutch by lifting it up with your toe (this returns it to the default position). If you have to adjust the clutch in the Mustang more than two clicks, then something more may be wrong with your car.


3. Keep the clutch adjustment you made in your Mustang by bending the tab on the ratchet mechanism. By bending the tab, you prevent the clutch from readjusting if you accidentally lift the clutch pedal with your foot.


4. Check out clutch pilot bushing as well as the transmission input-shaft bearing should you have clutch chatter after you have adjusted the clutch of your Ford Mustang. It could be an indication of excessive play of the inplay shaft.

Mount A Harleydavidson Engine Guard

Engine guards provide some protection against a low-speed fall.


Engine guards are a common accessory found on many Harley-Davidson motorcycles, affording a small amount of protection to the sensitive motor and enhancing the motorcycle's appearance. There are many different engine guard variations available to the Harley rider, but most use a tubular steel bar design that bolts directly onto existing mounting points found on the frames of many Harley-Davidson models. For the most part, installation is fairly straightforward, but some engine guard kits can be a bit more complicated than others.


Instructions


1. Hold the engine guard against the front of the frame. Center the engine guard's upper mounting bracket between the frame's tubes below the motorcycle's steering head, which is the tube that the front fork pivots on. Loosely bolt the bracket onto the frame, using a socket wrench and a bolt supplied with the engine guard kit.


2. Align the bottom of the engine guard against the frame. Secure the sides of the engine guard to the bottom of the frame, using the U-bolt or clamp included with the engine guard kit. Tighten the U-bolts or clamps loosely, using a socket wrench.


3. Turn the handlebars from side to side to ensure that the engine guard does not prevent the fork from moving freely. Loosen the lower mounting clamps or U-bolts and reposition the engine guard if the fork touches it.


4. Tighten all three mounting bolts or clamps completely, using a socket wrench, starting with the upper mounting bolt.


5. Clean the engine guard with an ammonia-based window cleaner to remove any fingerprints or oil. Dry the engine guard with a clean shop towel.

Buyout Vs Retirement Packages

There are frequently two types of separation monetary payments made to leaving employees who are not departing on the basis of quitting, termination or for medical reasons. These two categories are retirement and buyouts. They are unique and different from each other and should not be confused. That said, for those who are nearing the end of their career, both options can seem attractive, depending on the individual employee's retirement plans.


Buyout Packages


Also known sometimes as "early retirement packages," buyout packages are essentially an option exercised by an employer to offer a lump sum payment to an employee to sever her employment relationship voluntarily. The amount is above and beyond current earnings, so it can be an incentive for an employee to leave service earlier than planned. Eligible employees are those with good standing, and the buyout plan has nothing to do with any disciplinary procedures. Most buyouts are voluntary before a forced layoff plan is implemented.


Because the lump sum payment is considered income, you must report it as income for tax purposes. Buyout payments also are frequently paid as an after-tax payment; however, it may be possible to have an employer deposit the amount or a portion in a 401(k) or similar employer retirement plan to avoid taxes in the immediate tax year.


Retirement Packages


Unlike a buyout package, a retirement package is designed to reward an employee after a set number of years of service is provided to an employer. It is considered a labor benefit, and specific criteria need to be met before it can be paid. The employee must be vested, must have served a set number of years of service and must have chosen a specific payout approach once separation occurs. The retirement package is not paid until the employee actually retires from service. The employee is not forced to retire by the employer and can choose when to implement the process.


Historical retirement packages were paid in the form of a pension. The employee at retirement usually could choose from a lump sum payment, a full pension and survivor benefit for a spouse, and a modified lower pension with the same amount guaranteed for a surviving spouse on death. The exact specifics varied by company and what they would offer. Today's retirement packages are in the form of 401(k)s and similar accounts.


Most retirement accounts are in the form of pretax funding, so a departing employee will need to decide if he wants to take distributions and pay taxes or rollover the package to an individual retirement account, thereby deferring taxes until later.


Who is in Charge of Implementation


Buyout packages can be implemented by any employer on its employees. Frequently, private-side employers use this offer to get higher-paid employees in units designated surplus off the books. This avoids the confrontational and bitter approach of layoffs and possible litigation since the employees choose to put the package into effect. Due to civil service restrictions, government agencies are frequently barred from implementing buyout packages on public employees unless they receive special legislative permission.


Retirement packages are implemented both with public and private-side employers. As noted above, they are frequently established for new employees as self-funded or matching-funded 401(k) accounts and similar. Traditional defined benefit packages such as pensions are few and far between now, with only government agencies still offering such packages to new hires.


Package Cost


Buyout packages are one-time expenses, but they can be very expensive in the year they are implemented. Depending how many employees take up the offer, the general buyout package usually represents 6 months to a year of full salary for the affected employee. However, once the employee is separated and paid, the company no longer has the payroll cost for the position, so the expense begins to be offset after a year.


Retirement packages were historically much more expensive over time, since pensions had to be funded until the retired employee died. Today's retirement packages such as 401(k)s are only funded while deposits occur, so once the employee is separated, the company has no further obligation to pay into the employee's account. Not surprisingly, many companies have switched to such plans for employees' retirement benefits.


Rollout


Retirement packages need to be defined and detailed to an employee at the time of hire. It is considered a labor benefit, so an employee needs to know what she is working for in terms of compensation perks when starting employment.


Buyout packages are determined when management decides they can be helpful in reducing overall staffing costs. Buyouts can happen at any time management determines they are useful. Once announced, management should follow through, as buyouts usually send a strong signal to everyone that the entity is serious about reducing staffing levels.
