Hot Rod Tips For Cobra Pipes

Cobra Hot Rod exhaust systems improve a motorcycle's looks and performance.

There is something about the low growl of a hot rod motorcycle that turns heads and excites motorcycle enthusiasts. In addition to improving the visual appeal of a street bike, a custom motorcycle exhaust system can also increase the motorcycle's engine performance. One of the most highly recognized performance exhaust systems is the collection of Cobra Hot Rod exhaust systems.

Audio Improvements

Cobra Hot Rod exhaust systems remove the internal baffles that manufacturers design into their exhaust systems. By creating an uninhibited echo chamber from the motorcycle's piston to the end of its exhaust pipe, motorcycles fitted with Cobra Hot Rod exhaust systems growl and roar, rather than purr quietly down the road.

Performance Improvements

High-performance exhaust systems also create performance advantages for motorcycle engines. By allowing the exhaust gases to exit the cylinder more quickly, the motorcycle engine can complete its four-stroke cycle faster, thus creating higher levels of torque and horsepower. According to Motorcycle USA writer Bryan Harley, the Cobra high-performance exhaust system installed on his Honda Fury II motorcycle increased the torque output by more than 10 percent and overall horsepower by more than 25 percent.

Visual Presentation

Perhaps the most important aspect of any motorcycle performance upgrade is the bike's appearance when the upgrade is complete. Cobra high-performance exhaust systems are manufactured in a variety of styles, which all improve a bike's appearance. Whether a rider is looking for clean, straight lines, or an exhaust system that flows with the natural curvature of the vehicle's original design, Cobra Hot Rod pipes are available to match.

Related Engine Performance Upgrade Kits

Changing the dynamic properties of the motorcycle's exhaust system also changes the engine's performance. Cobra manufactures a number of engine upgrades that are recommended to bike enthusiasts when installing their exhaust pipe upgrades. Redesigned intake manifolds and electronic fuel management systems help ensure the motorcycle's power plant gains the most power advantage available from the redesigned exhaust system.

Protect My Harley Chrome

Motorcycles, especially Harleys, have a lot of chrome that an owner needs to protect.

Harley Davidson is a well-known manufacturer of motorcycles. Motorcycles often have chrome wheel rims, handlebars and other parts of the bike. The chrome provides a distinctive look to motorcycles. In addition to its high sheen, chrome is also resistant to tarnish. Keeping the chrome in top condition is a matter of regularly maintaining the motorcycle.

Instructions

1. Clean the chrome parts on a regular basis. Fill a bucket with dishwashing soap and hot water to remove surface dirt and grime. Use a sponge to prevent scratching the chrome. Rinse the chrome thoroughly with fresh water. Dry with soft cloths.

2. Apply chrome polish with a soft cloth. Rub the chrome polish into the motorcycle's chrome parts. A chrome polish deep cleans the chrome, removing any early signs of corrosion.

3. Apply a chrome wax to the chrome. Buff the chrome to bright out the shine. Chrome wax protects the metal by providing a coat that acts as a barrier to moisture and water.

4. Cover the motorcycle when not in use. The cover protects the motorcycle's chrome by from environmental changes that corrode chrome.

Compare Serta And Sealy Mattresses

Comparing mattresses can be confusing at times.

Serta and Sealy are two of the largest and most well-known mattress companies in the world. Deciding which brand to go with can be challenging, since they'll often use different model names to describe what is basically the exact same mattress, and the price can vary greatly from store to store. There are several characteristics you should examine when comparing mattresses, including if it uses springs or foam, size, thickness and overall price. Comparing Serta and Sealy mattresses to each other requires some research. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Examine similar mattress types. Both Serta and Sealy manufacture innerspring mattresses, which use coiled springs to provide mattress firmness. They also manufacture memory foam and latex mattresses. Compare an innerspring mattress to an innerspring mattress and memory foam to memory foam for the most reliable comparison, since comparing memory foam to latex won't give you an accurate comparison of the two companies.

2. Look at a Serta mattress that you like and then ask the mattress salesman for its Sealy equivalent. Mattress makers change the names of their mattresses per store to make price shopping more difficult, according to Seth Stevenson of Slate. The salesperson should be familiar with what equivalents exist in the store between brands so you can make a more accurate comparison.

3. Decide on what thickness you prefer between the corresponding Serta and Sealy brands. Thickness is largely a marketing tool, since thicker mattresses look more comfortable without actually having any additional benefit compared to a thinner variety. But you may have an aesthetic preference regarding how high or thick the mattress is.

4. See if the mattress has a box spring. If the Serta and Sealy models are direct equivalents, they likely will either both have a box spring or both not have one. A box spring adds to the price of the overall package, however, so decide if you want to invest in one. They are intended to reduce the compression of the mattress and, therefore, make it last longer.

5. Lay down on the Serta and Sealy equivalents and see if one feels more comfortable than the other. Comfort should be the most important feature to look for in a new mattress.

6. Look at the prices between the two brands. If the difference in comfort is negligible, go with the cheaper one. Depending on the specific store you're in, one brand may be drastically cheaper than the other, though Serta and Sealy are fairly similar price-wise overall. This will depend on the store you are in, so shop around for best results.

About Leather Jackets

From hip hoppers to Harley riders, many people wear leather jackets to express urban cool. Leather jackets are the accessory of choice for rock stars and rock star wannabes, but they also have an illustrious history, make fashion sense and are useful in various lines of work and recreation. They are one of the few clothing items that can make the transition from the office to the shopping mall to dinner on the town, and all the places in between. Does this Spark an idea?

History

For many people, the birth of the leather jacket began with Marlon Brando in "The Wild One," James Dean in "Rebel Without a Cause" and with Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper in "Easy Rider." Then, of course, there is Fonzie, everyone's favorite '50s cool cat of television, not to mention Danny Zucco/John Travolta in "Grease". While movie and television characters of the '50s, '60s and '70s was rife with guys in leather, the artists and rock stars of the real world were picking up their cues. Their predecessors were the aviators and military men of the 1940s who wore bomber jackets.

Types

There are as many types of leather jackets as there are situations for wearing them. The classic bomber jacket, worn by the military and celebrities alike, is less tailored and thicker. Italian leather jackets are known for their longer, more tailored cut and soft leather. Motorcycle jackets, typically sporting many buckles and zippers, are popular. A modified version, often lined with metal studs, was worn by The Ramones and British punk rockers in the 1970s. Designers like Christian Dior and Gucci add details to fitted leather jackets, such as as intricate stitching. In 2008, some designers came out with leather jackets in asymmetrical cuts, giving an old classic a fashionable edge. Some leather jackets come hooded, with zip-off sleeves, in distressed leather or lined. Vintage leather jackets can be the most fun to own, because they come with a history as well as a lower price tag (sometimes). For new leather jackets, you may be able to find something in the $150 range. At the high end, some people shell out $1,000 for a leather jacket. It's a far cry from the $7 price tag for a leather jacket in the 1950s.

Benefits

There are many benefits to a well-made leather jacket. It's ideal protection against wind, light rain, and the chill of late autumn. Motorcyclists wear them not just to look cool, but because they are decent protection of the torso and arms if the rider falls of his bike. If they are made of quality leather, they last for forever, and only look better as they age. Leather jackets are adaptable, the perfect canvas for punk band logos or designer labels. Best of all, a good leather jacket is always in style.

Warning

A cheap leather jacket can ultimately be disappointing. The stitching may come out but, even worse, the cheaper leather stays stiff after many wearings, and the suppleness of worn leather is one of a leather jacket's greatest advantages. Cheap leather can carry an unmistakable squeak when you move, which can be a turn-off. It also can have the sheen of plastic as opposed to the deeper radiance of leather.

Prevention/Solution

If you are part bad boy and part animal rights activist, there is a solution to the leather controversy. There are now excellent options in faux leather jackets. Vinyl, or PVC, has been abandoned in favor of polyurethane. It is more flexible and breathable. It's made from a natural resin. is a much better option. PU is flexible, breathable and made from natural resin. OBEY makes a Super Bad Bomber Jacket with quality details such as rib cuffs, pocket details, polar fleece lining and an excellent cut. BonaDrag takes a page from vintage styles with its faux leather motorcycle jacket, adorned with zippers.

Engine Oil In Exhaust Pipe Signs Of Trouble

Keep an eye on your car's pistons and rings.

If anything besides exhaust is coming out of your vehicle's exhaust pipe, it could be signs of trouble. In the case of oil in your exhaust, it is important that you address the problem immediately. Keep in mind that almost any sign of oils exiting from the exhaust system will require professional evaluation.

Clogged PVC Valve

The PVC valve allows the ventilation of controlled amounts of internal engine gases into the combustion chambers, allowing them to be burned. When it becomes clogged, it can cause the engine to become internally pressurized, forcing oil past important seals and into the exhaust stream. This can be accompanied by bluish smoke, reduced fuel economy and oil-fouled spark plugs. You can easily address this problem with a simple replacement of the valve.

Worn Valve Guides

Valve guides are an internal part of the engine that help to control the flow of gases into and out of the engine. They are lubricated by engine oil and have seals around their shafts that can become worn, allowing engine oil to seep past them. When this happens, engine oil leaks past the worn valve and into the flow of exhaust gases from the engine, accumulating in the exhaust pipe. Usually, this problem will be accompanied by bluish smoke coming from the exhaust.

Blown Head Gaskets

Head gaskets seal the "heads" of the engine to the block. They are part of the intake and exhaust system and seal the many fluid passages between the heads and block. When a head gasket fails, fluids can escape past the seal and into the exhaust stream. This problem is normally accompanied by overheating, reduced power, poor fuel economy and rough running.

Worn-Out Piston Rings

Pistons are the part of the engine that harnesses the energy from fuel combustion. Ignition of the fuel mixture forces them up and down in their bores, providing energy to move the vehicle. They are sealed in their bores by piston rings around their circumference, which are lubricated by engine oil. When these rings become worn, oil and fuel can leak past them into the exhaust system. This problem will be accompanied by white to bluish smoke and a noticeable loss of engine power.

Hole in Piston

Pistons directly harness the energy from combustion. A piston that develops a hole in its surface allows gases and oil to escape past it into the exhaust. This problem is usually accompanied by smoke, poor running, poor performance and engine noise.

Cracked Engine Block

An engine block is the block that houses all the internal parts of the engine and is full of passages that control the flow of fluids to its various working parts. A crack in the engine block allows oil to escape into the exhaust in a wide variety of ways and is always a serious problem. This problem will usually be accompanied by overheating, loss of power, rough running and engine noise.

Harley Davidson Fatboy History

Harley Davidson, an American motorcycle company, has a history of paying homage to the American Armed Forces. According to Kevin Lang, parts manager at New Roc Harley Davidson and life-long Harley Davidson enthusiast, the company named the Fat Boy after Little Boy and Fat Man, the two atomic bombs that were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, respectively.

Family

The Fat Boy belongs to the Softail family, a line of motorcycles known for its hardtail look with hidden rear suspension that Harley Davidson first introduced in 1984. As of 2009, all members of the Softail family, unless otherwise noted, have a rigid mountain twin-cam 96B engine, 6-speed cruise drive transmission, horseshoe-style gas tank with chrome external oil lines, a 5.0-gallon fuel tank and a Rockertail, Bobtail or FL-style rear fender.

Original Model

The Harley Davidson Motor Company unveiled the Fat Boy in 1990. Inspiration for this bike came from the B-29 bombers that the American armed forces used during World War II. This original Fat Boy model featured the patented Evolution engine, silver grey color (the only color option available), solid-cast aluminum wheels, a wide-bodied fuel tank and a wide front fork.

Customization

Each year, beginning in 1999, the Harley Davidson Motor Company releases a customized version of a few select motorcycles. Available only for one year, these bikes, known as Custom Vehicle Operations (CVOs), have custom paint options, custom wheels, added accessories and the patented Screamin' Eagle engine. In 2005, the Fat Boy joined the CVO program to commemorate its 15th anniversary and featured a lower suspension than the original model, as well as a solo seat called the steel pan.

Additional Model

In 2010, the Harley Davidson company introduced another Fat Boy model: the Fat Boy Lo. This motorcycle sports a very low suspension, an inch-and-a-quarter lower than the original Fat boy and the lowest of any Harley-brand motorcycle. Other details that separate the Fat Boy Lo from the original model include a narrower seat, narrow handle bars and a new tank panel with a Harley Davidson medallion.

Fun Facts

In the movie "Terminator 2: Judgment Day," Arnold Schwarzenegger rides around Los Angeles on the original Fat Boy model. Universal Studios in Hollywood, California, created an attraction based on this film, which features a custom-built Fat Boy similar to the one used in the film. Other films that feature the Fat Boy include "Wild Hogs," "Bulworth" and "Renegade."

Clean Leather Saddlebags

Clean Leather Saddlebags

Leather saddlebags, for either a horse or a motorcycle, require a different level of cleaning care than a leather couch. Because saddlebags are exposed to the elements, leather cleaner plus a conditioner are needed to keep them soft and clean. Choose cleaners and conditioners that are marked biodegradable, rather than cleaners that contain petroleum products; natural-based cleaners will make your leather saddlebags last longer. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Dampen a soft cloth with a little room temperature tap water.

2. Pour a quarter-sized amount of leather cleaner shampoo on the soft cloth. Most leather cleaners don't require additional water.

3. Rub the shampoo into the saddlebags, paying extra attention to areas with embedded dirt or stains. With most leather cleaners, no rinsing is required because the dirt sticks to the shampoo; good leather shampoo soaps don't leave a residue. However, follow the product instructions on the leather cleaner you're using.

4. Apply a quarter-size amount of conditioner to the other clean, soft cloth. Rub the conditioner into the leather. Allow it to penetrate for a few minutes, then apply another layer of conditioner if the leather still feels dry. Look for a conditioner that has UV protectants in it.

Torque Specifications Of F150 Wheels

Torque wrench allows you to measure the tightness of a nut.

Wheels on a Ford F150 truck should be inspected every 7,500 miles or six months, whichever comes first. If the wheel's bolt holes have become elongated or flattened then replace the wheel. Lug nuts need to be checked for tightness with a torque wrench. The lug nuts can be accessed by removing the hub cap.

Types of lug nuts

There are three types of lug nuts used on Ford F150 trucks. There is one 1/2 inch diameter lug nut option and two 9/16 inch diameter nuts, one standard and the other with a swivel washer attached. Each type of lug nut has its own torque requirement.

Specifications

Lug nuts that are 1/2 inch in size should be tightened to 100 ft-lbs of torque.

Single rear wheel lug nuts that are 9/16 inches should be tightened to 145 ft-lbs of torque.

Dual rear wheel 9/16 inch lug nuts should be tightened to 220 ft-lbs of torque. Swivel lug nuts, lug nut with a swivel washer attached, should be tightened to 145 ft-lbs of torque.

Tighten the front wheel lug nuts to the same torque as the rear.

Warnings

Tightening the lug nuts with more torque then recommended will cause the wheel to warp or mounting holes to flatten out. Always tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern to prevent the wheel from warping.

Great Low Price Christmas Gifts

You can buy great gifts without spending lots of money.

If you're watching your wallet this Christmas season, you may be thinking that all you can buy is a card or two to mail. However, there are plenty of great low-priced gifts out there. Even on a tight budget, you can spread some holiday cheer this season. Does this Spark an idea?

Basket of Edibles

Gift baskets make for a pretty presentation, they work well for those hard-to-shop-for folks, and, best of all, they can be filled with low-priced items. Such as food, for example. For a friend who loves the cuisine of Mexico, visit your grocery store for quesos and Mexican spices. For a friend who loves Italian food, buy a bag of pasta and a small block of Parmesan or a round of mozzarella cheese. Add a few recipes you neatly printed onto 3-by-5 cards. At a craft store or large retail chain store, purchase cellophane, ribbon, basket filler and small baskets, all of which are very inexpensive. Fill the baskets, wrap them in cellophane, tie the cellophane closed with ribbon, and you have very nice gifts that you spent less than $20 each on. Try putting together a fruit basket, coffee basket, breakfast basket or whatever your friends like.

From You By You

Try making your Christmas gift by hand. Doing so not only gives the items sentimental value, it also lets you customize them for each recipient. And you can keep prices low buy using items you already have around the house. If you're skilled at carpentry, turn unused bits and sheets and pieces of wood into wall sconces, decorative folding screens, jewelry boxes or furniture such as a step stool or footrest. If you can sew, make a decorative pillow, or a quilt or blanket out of a favorite article of clothing now too tattered to be worn. If you're a crafty kind of person, weave a basket or mat, sculpt some pottery or make a pair of matching lampshades for the bedroom or some art for the living room. Or create some jewelry: a bracelet, a necklace or a pair of earrings.

The Right Read

A book is another excellent idea for a low-priced gift. You can use your discount card at a bookstore, or shop online for secondhand books. And like the gift basket, books are a good gift for family members and friends who are hard to please. Everyone has something that they're interested in; find out what it is and look for inexpensive books on the subject. Science, fashion, music, architecture, history, insects, cooking, travel, foreign language, woodworking, chocolate, animals, coin collecting, comics, maps -- you can find a tome on any topic. And don't forget to personalize the book by writing in it "To:___" and "From:___," with a short message and the year.

About Denim

About Denim

Denim has an interesting history that begins in France. However, it wasn't until the fabric was introduced to America by Levi-Strauss that it became a popular trouser fabric. By the 1950s, all of America was wearing denim, and the rest of the world soon followed. Today there are many types of denim, as well as countless washes, colors and uses for the fabric.

History

Denim has a long and varied history. It was first created by the Andre family in the city of Nimes, France. Denim was created from a serge fabric, which is a specially woven type of cotton twill. Denim got its name from the shortening of "serge de Nimes," which was the phrase used to describe the fabric when it was first created.

Time Frame

Although denim had been around since the 16th century, knowledge of the fabric was limited. Denim did not become popular in America until the mid-1800s, when Levi Strauss began making pants for miners out of the "serge de Nimes." Even though it became popular with workers and miners at that time, It was not until the movie industry boomed in the 1930s and 1940s that the general public began to wear denim. Movie stars playing cowboys and ranchers were idolized on the big screen, and the desire to emulate their style resulted in the popularity of denim pants.

Function

Denim was first used as a sturdy fabric for laborers' pants. Upon its import to America, it came to function as the trouser of choice for gold rush miners as well.

Once the general public began wearing denim, it was still primarily used in the creation of pants. However, with the technological advancements in the textile industry, it became possible to create a thinner, more malleable denim during the 1960s. Consequently, denim began to be used in creating thin, comfortable shirts, on trims for clothing, on purses and in jackets.

Types

Today there are a few main types of denim. The most basic type is called raw denim. Raw denim is the pure, unaltered result of the denim-making process. The characteristics of raw denim are a dark indigo color that is uniform throughout the pant and a stiffer feel to the fabric. Over time as the jeans are worn, raw denim will fade and shape to the wearer.

Washed denim is a denim fabric that has been treated with a particular dye and fading process that gives it a unique look and color. Washes can range from pure black to magenta to a simple light shade of blue.

Selvage denim, also sometimes referred to as "Japanese denim," is the highest quality denim available. It is characterized by a special weaving process that uses a single continuous thread instead of multiple cross-threads. This results in a clean inner edge on the seam of the jean and can be seen when the denim is turned inside out.

Considerations

When choosing the perfect pair of denim jeans, there are a few factors people should take into consideration. First and foremost, despite the current trend, consumers should always buy denim jeans that best flatter their body type. For women, a slight boot-cut fit is the most forgiving and balances out the hips. Also, denim that has been woven with 2 percent stretch is typically more flattering and will fit better than nonstretch denim.

Even within one brand of jeans there are many types of denim used on the pants. This can result in different fits in the same size, even if the two pairs of jeans are the same style. For example, an unwashed raw denim will have less give and can feel thicker. The same style and cut of jean in a different denim, for example, with a 2 percent stretch, will fit more snugly overall.

One last consideration is that jeans without any spandex stretch are likely to fit tighter in the store but stretch out naturally over time. Because they do not have spandex, they will not snap back into their original shape after washing, and over many washes might get too loose. A general rule of thumb for women is to buy stretch jeans that fit just right in the dressing room, but buy nonstretch jeans a little tight because they will stretch out over time.

Fix A Paper Shredder

Fix a Paper Shredder

Once a luxury only used in large offices, personal and office paper shredders are now a must for any home or office. Like any other office machine, they can grow sluggish from too much use and too little maintenance. There are a few ways to fix paper shredder malfunctions without visiting the repair shop.

Instructions

1. Shut off the shredder. Unplug it and let in cool down for up to one hour. This will work if the shredder has stopped due to excessive use.

2. Check to see if the shredder is jammed. This is the most common cause of shredder problems. Click the power switch to reverse, which should clear a minor jam. If not, set the shredder to auto, and then to reverse again until the jam clears.

3. Clear extremely stubborn paper jams by grabbing the stuck paper and gently pulling it out. If smaller pieces of paper cause the jam, shut off the shredder and unplug it. When it cools down, carefully use a pair of tweezers to remove the paper bits.

4. Determine if the power supply to the shredder is working properly. If the power supply is cold, use an alternative source of electricity for your shredder. If it is warm, there may be a problem with the shredder itself. Call your office machine repair shop or the shredder manufacturer for assistance.

5. Sharpen or oil the blades. Shredder blades need to be oiled on a regular basis to keep your machine in proper working order. Get oil made specifically for shredder blades from an office supply store.

Use A Scooter Helmet Lock

Helmet locks will keep your gear safe from thieves.

Helmets are essential for protecting your head when you are riding your scooter, but when you make a stop and plan to do some walking, shopping or dining, it can be a pain to carry the helmet around. You could leave your helmet hanging from your handlebars and risk the chance it will be stolen, but it's always wiser to have a helmet lock. Some scooters come equipped with locks inside the luggage compartment, but for better protection you can purchase a tougher helmet lock and easily install it yourself. There are many different helmet lock options on the market, with two of the most common types being handlebar and cable locks.

Instructions

Using the Factory Installed Lock

1. Open the luggage compartment under your scooter seat. Inside the luggage compartment you should see a plastic or metal hook. This hook may be attached to the underside of the seat itself.

2. Close your scooter helmet's strap and shorten it, then loop it over the hook in the luggage compartment. You may have to hold it in place until you lower your seat most of the way.

3. Close your seat and make sure it snaps to indicate it is locked. Your helmet will be hanging outside of the scooter but the majority of the strap will be inside the luggage compartment.

Using Cable Locks

4. Open the locking mechanism on the cable lock and pull out the cables.

5. Open the visor of your full-face helmet or close and tighten the straps of your open-face helmet.

6. Loop the cable in through the neck opening and out through the face opening of your helmet or loop it through the d- or o-ring on the closed chin strap of your full-face helmet.

7. Loop the cable through a part of your motorcycle where it can't easily be removed, such as a loop under the seat of your scooter or through the luggage rack.

8. Insert both ends of the cable through the lock and shorten them if needed so the helmet doesn't hang too far down, then lock the lock.

Using a Handlebar Lock

9. Disassemble the lock, which should have a clamp for the handlebar and an opening for the cable. This type of lock will usually come with a tool specific to its bolts or screws.

10. Clamp the handlebar opening around whichever handlebar, right or left, you prefer to use and reinsert and tighten the bolt or screw. Depending upon the size of your handlebar, you may have to insert a washer to reduce the size of the handlebar opening on the lock. These washers should come standard with the lock. If the lock comes in more than one piece, you may have to insert one bolt before adding the locking mechanism and reinserting and tightening a second bolt.

11. Open the receiving hole on the lock using the key.

12. Loop the cable through the neck opening, then the face opening of the helmet, or through the d- or o-ring of the chin strap if the helmet is open face, then put the cable through the receiving hole of the lock. If the lock does not have a cable, loop the strap of your helmet through the receiving hole or over the lock pin that opens up.

13. Push the lock closed, making sure the cable or chin strap doesn't get caught in the mechanism, and turn the key to lock it.

Limit A Loud Exhaust

Limit a Loud Exhaust

A vehicle's exhaust system is designed to transport the exhaust gases produced by combustion to a place safe for release. During transport on more modern vehicles, the gases are guided through a catalytic converter which alters noxious gases to a less toxic state. The gases are then guided through the muffler to dampen sound through resonance and sound-absorbing materials and finally are ported through the exhaust pipes. To limit the sound of a loud exhaust, alteration of the exhaust components or restriction of sound waves is required.

Instructions

1. Attach a resonated exhaust tip to the tailpipe. This may require replacing an existing exhaust tip. A resonated tip is lined with fiberglass or other sound-dampening liners. As sound waves pass through the lined tip, the waves are absorbed by the material, and the exhaust sound is reduced.

2. Install sound-dampening material in the cabin of the vehicle. Sound-dampening sheets are designed to absorb vibration and sound. Lined against the sheet metal of the vehicle cabin, the dampening layer acts as a shield to external sounds and vibrations from the exhaust. The sound-dampening mats or sheets should be installed under the carpeting, in the frames of the doors against the metal and, if possible, against any framing surfaces (behind the ceiling liner and on the inside of the dash). When installed, the dampening materials will limit exhaust noise, decrease road noise and add to the clarity of sounds in the vehicle (such as stereo music or occupant conversations).

3. Add a sound-reducing muffler. Mufflers designed with sound resonance chambers or baffles and have sound absorbing materials will reduce the sound waves produced by the exhaust. If you have a dual exhaust system (the exhaust output from the engine cylinders is separated into two complete paths), you can install a dual-in muffler system. This will allow the exhaust gases to collide in a single muffler and cancel much of the noise produced by two complete exhaust systems.

4. Install sound-dampening, high-temperature wrap around the exhaust. Sound dampening exhaust wraps reduce the transfer of vibrations to the vehicle and will limit the amount of sound in the cabin.

Identify Antique Harley Tanks

Screw holes on the tank can help narrow its year.

Some Harley-Davidson enthusiasts enjoy restoring old bikes to their original condition. Sometimes identifying all the antique parts, whether on the bike or not, takes some sleuth work. Harley gas tanks can mostly be identified by the badges on the tank, and in the absence of these the types of screw holes for relief impressions where the badges were once attached. Sometimes these dents are on the bottom of the tanks or between them.

Instructions

1. Check the frame of the bike for a vehicle identification number, which appeared on all Harley-Davidsons after 1968. This number can pinpoint the year it was made. Use a Harley antique catalog to identify the type of tank manufactured on Harleys that year and compare it with the tank currently on the bike. If the characteristics match, it is likely the tank is original.

2. Look for a fuel shutoff petcock on the top of the left tank. If one is present, the tank was manufactured between 1941 and 1965.

3. Check the tank for emblems. Match any you find in the Harley catalog. If there are no emblems, examine the relief impression left by them. Often, their shapes can still be deciphered in the tank. For example, tanks made in 1961 and 1962 have the relief that held a starburst emblem.

4. Check for strips on the tank that once held an emblem. For example, a strip was spot welded on the tank between 1940 and 1946. Some years produced tanks with additional strips or different shaped strips.

Rent To Own Purchase

A rent-to-own home purchase can be a good deal for both buyer and seller.

A rent-to-own contract, also known as lease-to-own, is essentially a rental lease in which the tenant has the option to purchase a property at a predetermined time. Rent-to-own contracts are particularly popular during economic downturns, when consumers have trouble getting loans. A rent-to-own contract is a good way to build equity in a home without having to go through a bank.

Types

Rent-to-own home contracts are also known as lease options, lease purchases, owner financing and land contracts. They aren't all the same thing, but they are commonly mistaken for each other. A lease option is a contract in which a tenant has the option to buy the property they are leasing after a certain time. It is the same as a rent-to-own contract. A lease purchase is not an option to purchase on the part of a tenant, but an obligation. Contingencies such as an improvement in credit score or a certain savings amount may be put in the contract, negating it if they are not met. Owner financing or a land contract is a purchase by a buyer from an independent seller. The seller finances the purchase for a certain time, after which the mortgage is either paid off or a balloon payment for the balance is drawn up.

Buyer-Tenant Benefits

A tenant who enters into a rent-to-own contract receives several benefits, including the ability to move into their new home without a significant down payment. Tenants can also work on the home they eventually plan to own (within the specifications of the lease) and put additional money in their monthly rent payment that will eventually be used toward the purchase of the home. Banks generally look more favorably at those who have lived in a home, with the intent to purchase, because it shows a record of payments as well as a commitment to the property.

Seller-Landlord Benefits

Benefits to the seller include the ability to get out from underneath a mortgage payment each month, or to receive income if the home is owned outright. Sellers also no longer have to maintain the property since most rent-to-own contracts put that responsibility on the buyer.

Disadvantages

While a rent-to-own contract seems like a great deal for everyone involved, there are some disadvantages that need to be considered. If a renter decides at the end of the lease term not to buy the property, the seller has to try to sell the property again, costing him time and money. For renters, if there are provisions in the contract that allow the seller to kill the deal based on poor property maintenance, late payments or other clauses, a renter will lose all the rent he paid, plus maintenance he did as well as any down payment that was collected.

Expert Insight

According to Anthony Sanders, a finance professor at Arizona State University, anyone considering a rent-to-own contract should keep the rent and purchase aspects separate. "Renters who want this option should go with a reputable broker and a good real estate attorney," Sanders said. "The incentive for the owner to cancel the option if house prices increase quickly is tremendous."

Lose Thigh Fat Fast At Home

Simple exercises can tone the thighs.

Thigh fat is a common problem for both men and women. Fat commonly collects in the hips, stomach and thighs. According to "Better Nutrition" magazine, losing weight only from the thigh area is impossible. You will need to exercise the entire body to burn off fat; eventually, you will lose fat from the thigh area. Every body is different and has different problem areas. Everyone will lose fat from different areas sooner than others. Where we can focus is on burning as much fat as possible while toning the thighs.

Instructions

1. Exercise frequently. You will need to conduct as much cardiovascular, fat-burning, high-intensity exercise as possible to kick start your system into fat-burning mode. Do this by running, cycling, swimming, dancing or following a workout DVD. Aim to exercise for at least an hour a day, three to five times a week.

2. Ensure that you are doing your cardiovascular training at a 75 to 80 percent intensity level. Use a heart rate monitor that will calculate this for you and give you an accurate measurement. These are inexpensive and available at supermarkets and sports stores.

3. Tone your thighs with lunges and squats. Incorporate these exercises into your daily routine. Squats will also help tone your arms if you hold dumbbells in your hand while doing them.

4. Cut out all junk food and foods that are high in fat. Choose healthy meals such as fresh steamed fish and vegetables or vegetable soup.

5. Drink eight 8-oz. glasses of water daily. This will help the body flush out toxins and aid the weight loss process.

Get A Refund For Gap Insurance When You Sell Your Car Or Truck

Not everyone realizes that if you purchased gap insurance and you sell your vehicle before it is paid off you are entitled to a partial refund. You need to initiate the refund. I have only had one gap insurance company that let me know if I had sold the vehicle I was entitled to get a partial refund.

Instructions

1. You purchase gap insurance when you buy a vehicle.

2. If you sell/trade the vehicle before you have paid the loan off then you are entitled to a gap insurance refund. The amount will vary based on the remainder of the loan.

3. Obtain an odometer disclosure statement. When you trade your vehicle in at a dealership they will give you the odometer disclosure statement. Save this disclosure.

4. Once the new lender pays off your car you will get a notice from the old lender showing that it was paid off. Save this paperwork.

5. Gather the odometer disclosure statement, the paperwork showing the loan was paid off and your paperwork showing the purchase of the gap insurance.

6. Go back to the dealership where you purchased the vehicle you had the gap insurance on. Tell them you need to cancel your gap insurance. They will get the form, fill it out and fax all your information to the gap insurance company.

7. Wait several weeks and then receive your check in the mail! It is that easy!

Lease A New Atv

Leasing an ATV, or all-terrain vehicle, is similar to leasing an inexpensive automobile. You are placed on a payment plan where you must make every payment for a specific period of time, which is typically a few years. Once the lease is up, you can either opt to pay a specified amount to purchase the vehicle or simply continue leasing a different ATV.

Instructions

1. Select the make and model of ATV you want to lease. Most facilities that sell and lease ATVs have a specific price per month listed for the ATV.

2. Pay the down payment for the ATV. This down payment is less than that for a standard car and is only a few hundred dollars. Often the down payment is the same as your monthly payment. If you don't have enough money for the initial down payment, you may need to secure a personal loan from a bank.

3. Sign the lease agreement paperwork. Once you sign the contract, you are locked into the payment plan for the specified amount of time. Trying to break the lease beforehand can result in a hefty penalty.

4. Make your payments every month--don't be late. Making a late payment can result in an increase of your future payments.

5. Stay under the amount of mileage you are allowed to drive on your vehicle. Exceeding the miles on your ATV before the lease expires can also result in a penalty or automatically renew the lease.

Why Are Harley Motorcycles Called Hogs

The term '"hog" is derived from Harley-Davidson's racing mascot during the 1920s.

The term "hog" has been associated with Harley-Davidson motorcycles since the early 1920s. Many businesses like Hula-Hogs in Maui, Hawaii, and Hogs-R-Us in Cork, Ireland, draw business based on this association.

Harley's Racing Mascot

Harley-Davidson has a long and rich history in motorcycle racing. According to Missy Scott, author of "Harley-Davidson Motorcycle Company," a team of farm boys who raced professionally for Harley-Davidson was affectionately known as the "hog boys" and used a pet pig as a mascot. After each win, one of the team members would carry the pig with him on the victory lap.

Harley's Owners Group (H.O.G.)

Harley's Owners Group (H.O.G.) began in 1983. The acronym "hog" was adopted to commemorate Harley's racing history. It has since become the world's largest motorcycle club, boasting more than 1,400 chapters around the world. A one-year membership subscription is free with the purchase of a new Harley.

Hogs Today

Although associated with Harley-Davidson, any custom motorcycle can be considered a hog. According to the authors of "The Legal Environment of Business," the term "hog" is generic. It has been applied to large motorcycles since 1935 and hence cannot be trademarked by Harley-Davidson.

Hook Up Computer Speakers To Hd Tv

HDTV delivers the best picture available, but the sound can often be improved by connecting an external pair of speakers. Self-powered speakers are required because the amplifier inside the television is not usually powerful enough to drive external speakers. Computer desktop speakers are a good choice. They have a built-in amplifier, usually inside the right-hand speaker. The only extra equipment required for this project is a Y-adapter with RCA audio plugs on one end and a jack with a mini-plug on the other.

Instructions

1. Insert the white and red plugs on the Y-adapter into the left and right Audio OUT jacks on the back of the HDTV.

2. Connect the plug on the end of the right-channel computer speaker to the mini-plug jack on the

Y-adapter. This completes the connection from the HDTV to the computer speakers.

3. Insert the plug attached to the left-channel speaker into the audio jack on the back of the right channel speaker.

4. Connect the AC adapter to the power jack on the back of the right-channel speaker, then plug the other end of the AC adapter into a wall outlet.

5. Switch on the computer speakers, and adjust the volume to the desired level.

Twin Cam 96ci Engine Specs

The Twin Cam 96Ci is a high-powered engine produced by Harley-Davidson Motorcycles. The engine was released in 2007 and, according to Harley-Davidson, the Twin Cam system provides cleaner burning and improved engine performance. The Twin Cam 96 engine replaced the Twin Cam 88, which was produced between 1999 and 2006.

Engine Specifications

The Twin Cam 96Ci produces 1,584 cubic centimeters, or 96 cubic inches, of piston displacement. Using 25-degree fuel injector nozzles, the engine features an improved electronic fuel injection system that more efficiently atomizes fuel and target sprays gasoline to enhance running performance in a variety of temperatures and climates, and provides for smoother starts. To increase power output over the Twin 88, the stroke ratio is increased from 4 inches to 4.38 inches in the Twin 96. Torque is approximately 90 foot-pounds, a 17 percent improvement over the Twin Cam 88.

Equipment

A new feature on the engine are oxygen sensors, which improve performance and efficiency and negate the need for catalytic converters in the U.S. The transmission is a six-speed, and the new six-gear reduces highway revs by 11 percent over the previous model transmission. The new primary-drive system has an automatic-adjustable chain tensioner design. Harley-Davidson claims the new carbon-fiber drive belt is 30 percent stronger and more narrow. The multi-piece camshaft is lighter and more durable than the older engine, while the hydrostatic cam bearings have a less complex design to increase weight carrying capabilities as well as improve durability.

History and Models

According to Harley-Davidson, the Twin 96 engine is next in line in over 100 years of Harley-Davidson engine history. The Twin Cam 96 is "evolved, yet carries on the legacy of the Flathead, Knucklehead, Panhead, Shovelhead, Evolution and Twin Cam 88 engine that came before." Upon its release in 2007, the Twin 96 was available on Harley-Davidson touring, Softail and Dyna motorcycles. The bolt-on Screamin' Eagle 103ci Big Bore Kit increases engine displacement from 96ci to 103ci and is available for select Harley-Davidson models.

Uses For Old Directv Receivers

DIRECTV has several satellites in near-Earth orbit.

DIRECTV is the oldest and one of the largest satellite television giants in the world. With several satellites in near-Earth orbit, DIRECTV beams premium television services to all of the United States and most of the world. DIRECTV's receivers are the terrestrial keystone to their satellite television operation, deciphering the satellite feed and turning it into a high-quality television picture. With all the metal and plastic in the receivers, the green question is raised: What do I do with my old DIRECTV receiver?

Recycle

Recycling is one option for disposing of an old DIRECTV receiver.

DIRECTV receivers contain metals, such as aluminum, and some models contain gold. The receivers also contain plastic and rubber. All of these materials are recyclable, so with no further necessity of an old DIRECTV receiver, recycling is a viable option. A simple Internet search for electronics recycling in your area may reveal several options. Also, contacting your county or city waste disposal departments will help you find locations to take your receiver.

Donate

Donating your old receiver will allow you to get a charitable tax reduction.

Donating is a tax-deductible option for any unwanted or unused household items, including your used receiver. Older DIRECTV receivers are often still usable, and could bridge the financial gap in one family's inability to afford satellite television. Simply take your receiver to any local charitable thrift-store operation and donate it to them. Usually the charity will give you a donation receipt, upon which you can fill in the value of your receiver and your other donations. You can use this receipt to write off the donation the next time you file your income tax.

Sell

Selling your used DIRECTV receiver can help you make a few extra dollars.

Selling a used DIRECTV receiver is the most monetarily advantageous option. Some options to sell a used receiver include Internet auction, newspaper classified, Internet classified, garage sale or flea market. New receivers are often more than $100, and some exceed $200. Selling your old receiver could mean a huge savings for someone who otherwise would not have been able to afford one.

Program A Power Commander

Power Commanders for motorcycles can be programmed in a variety of ways.

Power Commanders are units used to connect electrical systems, such as fuel injection or ignition settings, in motorcycles. The primary function of Power Commanders is to enhance the motorcycle's performance without changing the engine. Most come in kits that are specific to a brand of motorcycle. For instance, Power Commander devices used for Yamahas are different than those for Suzukis or Harley-Davidsons. Most cost in the range of $350 to $400.

Instructions

1. Program the unit, using a standard USB cable and the Power Commander software. Using the cable, connect the device to a computer. Install the software, either by downloading it from a website or by placing a CD in the computer hard drive. Once the software is installed, modify the settings to fit your bike by examining the various options and clicking on them with your cursor. Settings vary by device, but typically consist of a list of options that allow you to increase optimization for fuel injection, timing and other performance-related aspects.

2. Install the unit. Installing a Power Commander can be vary for each individual motorcycle. Follow the instructions specific to your bike. Generally, the first step is to find the customary connection harness, also called the "PCIII." The PCIII is usually underneath the seat. Once you locate it, plug in the Power Commander.

3. Modify the settings. Since most Power Commanders are pre-programmed, chances are that all you need to do is install it to give your motorcycle optimal performance. But in addition to modifying the settings via computer, you can also do so directly on the device. Each Power Commander comes with an array of buttons that enable you to modify everything from electrical timing to injection. There are a few subtle differences between programming the Power Commander on the device itself and on a computer. The most obvious difference being that programming directly on the device allows you to modify the settings while riding the motorcycle. Set the buttons to the desired performance.

4. Test the unit. Perhaps the best aspect of making sure your Power Commander is programmed correctly is to test it out by riding your motorcycle. Take a test ride and then adjust the unit accordingly. As an aside, you can always return the Power Commander to its default settings if needed.

4. Choose your desired synchronization options. Select "All" to synchronize all files automatically. The Zune software uses this method of synchronization by default and automatically performs the synchronization each time you connect the Zune HD to your computer. The "Items I Choose" option allows you to drag items from your collection to the icon representing your Zune HD. Any changes you make to these items automatically synchronize the next time you connect your device. For example, if you drag a group of songs to your device, then later delete one of those songs from your collection, the song automatically deletes off your Zune HD device the next time you synchronize. The "Manual Sync" option allows you to select the items you wish to synchronize individually. You must add or remove music, movies and other items manually between your computer and your Zune HD. No changes synchronize automatically once you select the "Manual Sync" mode.

5. Select and drag the files you want to synchronize if you choose to perform one of the manual sync options. Your library automatically synchronizes without further intervention if you've selected to sync all files. The size of your media library and the number of files you select determines the amount of time the initial synchronization process takes.

Specifications Of The M109

Versions of the M109 fire one of two artillery shells.

In the 1960s, the U.S. military developed the M109 howitzer, a mobile artillery piece used for ground support operations. The military have produced several variants of the M109 since the 1963 original, including the M1905A5 and the M109A6 (1993), also known as the Paladin. These models incorporated changes to the crew, engine and weapons systems. Paladin models remain in service today, recently seeing action in Iraq.

Drivetrain

An M109 draws power from one of two turbocharged diesel, two-stroke, eight-cylinder engines that sit just to the right of the driver. The engine in the original M109 produced 405 horsepower at 2,300 rpm. Engines in the Model M109A5 and later variants, including the Paladin delivered 440 horsepower at 2,300 rpm. The M109 engine transfers power via a seven-gear transmission.

Maneuverability

An M109 could attain a top speed of 35 mph on road, and 12 mph when driving over terrain. It included a 135 gallon gas tank that gave it a maximum range of 217 miles. The engine in an M109A5 and later variants increased these speeds to 38 and 17 mph, respectively. These howitzers can climb graded terrain up to a 60-degree angle, cross a trench with a 6-foot depth and scale a wall 1.75 feet tall. These vehicles could cross waterways with a depth up to 3.5 feet. Operators could install an amphibious kit to the M109, which used air bags to cross rivers or water of greater depths.

Each variant of the M109 until the M109A5 included a 135 gallon fuel tank that gave it a range of 217 miles. The increased speed and power output of the M109A5 and Paladin's engine, coupled with a 133 gallon tank, reduced the range to 186 miles.

Operability

The original M109 required a six-person crew for full operation, which the M109A6 Paladin variant cut down to four. This original crew included a driver, commander, gunner and assistant gunner to aim the howitzer's cannon up and down and left and right, respectively, and a two-person reloading team. A Paladin's computerized weapon system upgrade removed the need for one of the gunners and one of the reloading team members.

Ballistics

All variants of the M109 featured a belt-fed .50-caliber machine gun and 500 round ammo box fitted to the top of the turret. Every variant of the M109 fired a 155mm shell through its cannon; original models used .39-caliber rounds of this length, while the M109A2 and later versions fired a .23-caliber round.

Each 155 mm round weighs 98 pounds; the two-man reloading team needed to unscrew the breech (the cap covering the interior end of the cannon) to load each round after firing. This configuration gave the M109 a maximum fire rate of four rounds per minute for up to three minutes. A crew could fire one round per minute for up to one hour, with the lower fire rate permitting the cannon to cool down sufficiently in between each round.

The original M109 used a short-barrel cannon with a length of 238 inches to launch artillery; improvements to each model increased this barrel length to give the M109 greater range. An original M109 could hit targets up to 14,600 meters away; models that fired the .23-caliber rounds could ultimately strike targets from a distance of 30,000 meters.

Lace A Bicycle Wheel

Wheel building is the mark of a true bicycle mechanic.

One of the best things you can do to improve the riding qualities of your bicycle is to upgrade the rims. Of course if you have a top-of-the-line bike that cost thousands of dollars, chances are it already has good quality rims; but if your bike is on the lower end and only cost a few hundred, better rims will make a noticeable difference. A complete wheel set is expensive because if it has good rims it also has high-end hubs and other parts. If you lace your own wheels using your existing hubs and cassette with quality double-butted spokes and good rims, your bicycle will be greatly improved for minimal cash outlay, plus you gain the self-confidence that comes from the rite of passage of lacing your own wheels.

The most common spoke pattern is 36 spokes in a cross-3 pattern. The neophyte wheel-builder should master this pattern before considering anything more exotic.

Instructions

1. Oil the threaded end of a spoke and insert it through one of the holes in the rear hub, from the outside toward the inside of the flange on the drive side of the hub. This will be the key spoke. Look at the rim and find the valve hole. The spoke holes are offset to the left and right sides, alternating. Lay the hub on the ground with the drive side facing up and the key spoke pointing away from you, and lay the rim so that the hub is centered within it and the valve hole is at approximately the 10 o'clock position. With the rim laying on the ground, half of the spoke holes will be pointing toward the ground, and the other holes will be pointing up. Insert the threaded end of the key spoke into the first hole that is pointing up, clockwise from the valve hole. Thread a nipple partially onto the end of this spoke, with the protrusion of the nipple pointing toward the rim. This and all nine spokes in this group will be trailing; that is, they will angle counter-clockwise from the center line of the hub.

2. Insert a spoke through the second hole in the hub clockwise from the key spoke. In other words, skip one hole and place the spoke in the next one. Skip three upward-pointing holes in the rim and insert the spoke in the fourth hole, working clockwise from the key spoke. Thread a nipple partially onto this spoke. Continue in the same manner with the other seven spokes in the group, skipping one hole in the hub and three in the rim.

3. Flip the wheel over so that the drive side is toward the ground. Look at the key spoke and determine if it is in the hole next to the valve hole, or if there is a hole between the key spoke and the valve hole. If there is an empty hole between, the first spoke in this group will go in that hole. If not, it will go in the first hole on the other side of the valve hole.

4. Find the key spoke, and insert a spoke through the first hole in the hub to the right or clockwise, but on the opposite flange. Insert from the outside to the inside, as before. Insert the end of this spoke through the rim hole identified in step three, and partially thread a nipple onto it. Continue with the other eight spokes in this group, skipping one hole in the hub and three holes in the rim. These spokes will also be trailing.

5. Flip the wheel over so the drive side is up. Oil the threads of a spoke and insert it, this time from the inside of the hub toward the outside, in any hole in the drive side flange of the hub. This group will be leading spokes, so angle it clockwise so that it crosses over two and under one of the trailing spokes, and insert it into the first hole it reaches that is on the correct side of the rim. This will be one hole removed from the nearest trailing spoke. Thread on a nipple, and continue with the remaining 17 spokes on the drive side, always angling clockwise and crossing over two and under one spoke.

6. Flip the wheel over and repeat Step 5 on this side of the wheel. This will complete the installation of the spokes.

7. Screw all the nipples down with the screwdriver, incrementally until all are just seated but not tight. Then go all the way around again, pressing each leading spoke inward until it is straight, while re-seating its nipple with the screwdriver.

8. Turn the bicycle upside down and install the new wheel. Tighten all the spokes one full turn at a time, using the spoke wrench. Continue tightening the spokes incrementally until they feel as tight as a factory-assembled wheel, occasionally spinning the wheel to check its trueness. If you work incrementally, the wheel should remain true.

9. Follow the same steps for a front wheel, except that the front wheel has no drive side. Start from either side, and proceed in the same manner as with the rear wheel.

Buy Hd On A Budget

It takes research, but you can find an affordable HD television.

As of 2012, models of HDTVs cost anywhere from $1,200 to $2,5000. If your preferred budget is more like $200, you will have to compromise on some features, but you can still find a satisfactory television set with 1080p, the highest resolution available. Televisions using liquid crystal, or LCD, displays start at $250 for a 32-inch screen. Typical plasma televisions, which are larger, start at $400 to $800 for a 42-incher.

Size

The size of the screen is important to your viewing pleasure. Both Cnet and "Consumer Reports" recommend at least a 40-inch screen for a primary television. CNet states that in February 2012, typical prices ran from $350 for a 32-inch screen to $2,300 for a 64-inch screen. Larger, more upscale HDTVs offer more features as well as the bigger screen, so it's not a flat size-to-dollar ratio. For ideal viewing you should be seated no closer than 1.5 times the screen size -- 60 inches for a 40-inch TV -- and no further than twice the size -- 80 inches for a 40-inch screen.

Features

HDTV offers far more options and specs than old vacuum-tube televisions ever did. High-end models offers Wi-Fi connections, 3D TV and USB memory ports you can use to display photographs or home movies on the television screen. For a budget-conscious purchase, dispense with such bells and whistles. The number of HDMI inputs, on the other hand, is important. For example, three connections enables you to connect to cable or satellite, a DVD player and a gaming console without having to switch out plugs.

Picture Quality

Picture resolution -- the number of pixels on the screen -- isn't as important to good picture quality as the native contrast ratio, which is the degree of difference between black and white. Manufacturers boast of ratios as high as 5,000 to 1, but the human eye can't perceive a difference beyond a 1,000 to 1 ratio. Don't invest in anything more. Don't worry about dynamic contrast either: This blacks out dark scenes to make them darker but doesn't improve contrast within a given scene. Contrast ratios are determined by manufacturers' individual standards, so you can't compare across brands. The standards Samsung uses aren't the same as LG or Toshiba.

Considerations

When shopping for HDTVs, manufacturers' specs on contrast ratio and resolution aren't as important as whether you like the picture. If possible, set it to a channel you like to watch at home and look at it under lighting comparable to your TV room. Retailers set television displays to bright, colorful shows and settings that pump up the color, which may not give you an accurate sense of your home experience. Research what the model sells for at other stores and online and then negotiate. Keep an eye out for holiday sales and for last year's models to go on sale in January and February before the new sets come out. Retailers may offer display or floor models at a sizable discount, but be careful. The longer the model was turned on while on display, the less useful life it will have left.
