Replace A Dodge Ram Wheel Bearing

Dodge Ram trucks use wheel bearings inside rotor housing to allow the wheels to spin freely. These wheel bearings can fail because of a loss of lubricant or heat damage, and will require complete rotor replacement. The average backyard mechanic can replace the wheel bearings in a Dodge Ram in about three hours.


Instructions


1. Raise the truck with the floor jack by placing the jack head onto a frame rail and pumping the lever until the wheel is in the air. Position a jack stand next to the jack head on the frame rail for support.


2. Remove the wheel by turning the lug nuts counterclockwise, then pulling the wheel from the hub. Place the wheel aside, away from the work area.


3. Remove the caliper and pads by turning the twin rear mount bolts on the caliper body counterclockwise, then sliding the caliper from the rotor. Unplug the calipers with ABS from the wiring harness by pulling the adapter plug from the socket. A small screwdriver can release the catch on the plug.


4. Turn the spindle nut (hub nut) counterclockwise and remove it. The wheel bearings on most Ram models are sealed inside the rotor housing, and this housing must be removed. Behind the wheel lug bolt assembly, there are four 14mm bolts that can be turned counterclockwise. Slide the rotor off the hub.


5. Replace the rotor with a new unit and slide it over the hub spindle. Turn the four mount bolts clockwise until they are tight. Replace the spindle nut and turn it clockwise.


6. Replace the caliper and pads (new pads are recommended) by sliding the loaded caliper onto the rotor and turning the two mount bolts clockwise. Reattach the wiring harness connection by pressing the plug into the ABS socket on the caliper.


7. Replace the wheel by sliding it onto the lug bolts and turning all of the lug nuts clockwise, in an alternating pattern.


8. Remove the jack stand and lower the truck from the floor jack by turning the jack's pressure screw counterclockwise slowly.


9. Repeat this procedure on the opposite wheel.

1. Take your Lego skills to shop and mechanics classes in high school, as well as algebra, geometry, physics and English. Extracurricular activities that provide mechanical experience and computer literacy would also be beneficial for those looking to become diesel mechanics.


2. Know the difference between auto and diesel mechanics. Not only do they work on different equipment, but systems operate differently in some cases.


3. Volunteer or work part-time on a nearby farm if that option is available to you. Often, you can get hands-on experience tearing down tractors or machinery and learning how everything works.

6. Look for a diesel mechanics program that offers the training you want. Most community, career and technical colleges - and some colleges and universities - offer a one to two-year associate's degree or diploma program that allows students to specialize in different areas of diesel mechanics, including heavy equipment (construction), agricultural equipment and tractor-trailers.


7. Consider getting a job with a large company that offers on-the-job training right out of high school. Some large companies will even foot the entire bill of getting a diesel mechanic trained and certified.


8. Prepare yourself for the trade's technical aspect, especially the need for some fairly advanced mathematics and computer skills. Many systems on large diesel vehicles and equipment are electronic, so students must be able to disassemble, diagnose, fix and reassemble these systems, too.


9. Put in at least two years of practical work experience after graduating before taking the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) exams to become certified. After certification, the technician title will entitle you to slightly higher pay.

Rochester Carburetor Tips & Tricks

If properly cared for, the Rodchester carburetor can last a lifetime.


The Rodchester quadrajet has many features that make it a fuel-efficient and altitude-friendly carburetor for the seasoned, high-performance specialist or the owner of one of the classic cars or trucks that spawned from the 60s and 70s. Providing excellent driving performance, it has features that allow for easy tuning and adjustment. The quadrajet came stock on engines, such as the Buick V-6 muscle cars and all the way up to the Cadillac V-8, which had the 500 cubic inch engine.


Secondary Throttle Design and Gas Mileage


Due to the unique features of the secondary throttle plates on the quadrajet, when the accelerator activates, the secondary circuit creates an enormous fuel demand. Keep a heavy foot off the accelerator when driving during normal conditions. The primary, smaller throttle plates have more than enough acceleration power to drive the vehicle without ever opening the secondary circuit. Drivers can save on gas cost by using this easy method.


Tube Orifices


The quadrajet has four small tubes that protrude from the air horn. They consist of the secondary air bleeds and the acceleration well tubes. For the purpose of inspection and cleaning, all of the tubes should be clear of any debris or varnish. As they come precisely sized on the inside, no wires should be used to clean them. A strong acidic carburetor cleaner or hot tank immersion remains the proper way to clear the four orifices of any obstructions.


Brass Carburetor Parts


The quadrajet has many brass parts on the inside, like the needle seat. Care should be taken when removing the needle seat with a screwdriver, since it can be damaged by harsh turning force or slippage of the screwdriver. The carburetor float consists entirely of brass parts. The float height (measurement) determines the fuel level in the bowl. Any bent or misaligned part of the brass float levers can change the float level, either starving or flooding the engine. Be careful when working on the float, as these parts have critical alignment parameters.


Primary Power Piston


The springs and metering rods that attach to the primary power piston have been calibrated by the factory. The springs, in particular, should never be stretched or pulled past their tension limits. The bottom spring on the primary valve controls intake manifold vacuum. Overly stretched, the bottom spring can change engine vacuum, which effects the engine performance. Take extra care when cleaning these precision parts, never removing brass with abrasives. Use strong carburetor cleaner and forced air pressure.


Choke Setting


Calibrate the choke setting carefully to factory specifications. By following the sequence for each linkage adjustment in order, you can be sure that the choke, secondary circuit and throttle response will perform precisely, as though if it were new.


Accelerator Pump


The accelerator pump meters fuel under rapid and hard acceleration. The sudden opening of the throttle pushes the pump in a downward direction. The cupped seal sends fuel through the pump jets. Inspect the cupped seal carefully for any brittle spots, nicks or cuts. Even the slightest deformities can cause poor acceleration and stumbling throttle response. More than any other part in the quadrajet system, the cupped seal for the accelerator pump should be replaced upon every inspection or repair.

Remove Shovelhead Rocker Boxes

The different styles of rocker boxes allow you to identify Harley engines.


Harley-Davidson introduced the Shovelhead engine configuration in 1966. Intended as a replacement for the long-serving Panhead configuration, it derives its name from the shovel-shaped rocker boxes at the top of its cylinders. The Shovelhead over newer engines allows you to perform practically any repair or maintenance task at home using only basic tools. Removing the rocker boxes to change the gaskets is one such task you can accomplish yourself without visiting a mechanic.


Instructions


1. Check to ensure the motorcycle is cold; do not perform this task immediately after a ride. Turn off the fuel tap beneath the gas tank, and turn off the bike's ignition. Lift the seat by releasing the catch, and use a Phillips screwdriver to remove both electrical contacts from the battery.


2. Loosen the clamp around the fuel hose with a slotted screwdriver, and detach the hose from the fuel tap. Drain the gas from the tank into a container. Remove the front and rear mounting bolts from the gas tank, and disconnect the fuel gauge line if your bike has one.


3. Lift the gas tank off the motorcycle, and set it down on a flat, level surface covered with a soft cloth or towel to prevent marking the finish. For best results, leave the gas tank in a cool, well-ventilated area.


4. Remove the bolts that connect the rocker cover to the rest of the engine using an Allen wrench. Work from front to back on one cylinder at a time. Once you have removed all the bolts, you should be able to lift off the cover and remove the gasket.

Remove A Radio From A Harley Fairing

Remove a Radio From a Harley Fairing


Harley-Davidson radio systems are installed as a component of the fairing system. In order to remove the radio, the outer fairing must first be completely disconnected and placed aside, exposing the inner components of the fairing. The battery should also be disconnected to prevent shock or damage. This will require that the seat be removed. Overall length of time to complete the task should be between one and two hours. Work slowly and carefully around the outer fairing to avoid scratching or damaging the finish.


Instructions


Removing the Seat


1. Turn off the motorcycle ignition. Allow the motorcycle to cool down before proceeding.


2. Remove the fastener on the top of the rear fender with a cross tip screwdriver.


3. Push the seat toward the rear of the motorcycle to free the tongue underneath the seat from its slot within the frame.


4. Lift the seat free from the bike and set it aside.


5. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery with a 10 mm open-end wrench.


Removing the Outer Fairing


6. Disconnect the seven fasteners that secure the outer fairing using a Torx drive head. The seven connectors are located on the outer windshield, the inner fairing near the speakers and underneath the inner fairing near the handlebar clamp.


7. Tilt the fairing forward toward the front of the motorcycle. Squeeze and disconnect the wire connector attached to the headlight assembly.


8. Lift the outer fairing out and away from the bike. Place this assembly in a safe, out-of-the-way location.


Removing the Radio


9. Unplug the connectors attached to the radio from the motorcycle's wiring system. They are the black radio connector, the antenna cable connector, the gray radio connector and the CB antenna cable connector.


10. Remove the four screws that secure the radio to its support bracket with a hex key wrench.


11. Pull the radio out.

Install Screaming Eagle Ecm

Using the tuner software with your motorcycle allows you to modify aspects of your bike.


Screaming Eagle, or "Screamin' Eagle," is the "high-performance" division of Harley Davidson. They produce a race tuner software designed to allow a Harley Davidson owner to virtually tune their bike. ECM, or "Enterprise Content Management," refers to the virtual "brain" of software management. The race tuner software requires no add-on for additional ECM because the tuner is capable of reprogramming the stock ECM. Installing a new ECM on your bike requires making a few connections.


Instructions


1. Insert the Race Tuner disc into your computer and follow the installation process.


2. Connect the included 9 pin serial cable to your computer. Turn off your bike.


3. Access the bike's data link connector by removing the side cover on the right. Connect the 4 pin end of the cable to the connector.


4. Connect the Race Tuner module to the 9 pin female end of the bike's cable.


5. Connect the 9 pin female connector from your computer to the 9 pin male end of the module.


6. Turn your bike's ignition switch on. Click on "Program ECM" on the map screen on the race tuner module.


7. Wait while the software reprograms your bike's ECM.

Whether the words "Enjoy Coca-Cola" are imprinted on the logo in one of the many languages of the countries where Coca-Cola is available or not used at all, this logo is recognized throughout the world, made more distinct by the Coca-Cola font and the red and white colors; the C in particular has a recognizable, almost calligraphic flow.


McDonald's


There's no need to have the word "McDonald's" written on the logo at all. What Is The Difference Between Iso Grades Of Oil

Oils used in hydraulic machines and for lubrications have a viscosity grade as established by the ISO.


Industrial machines and even hand tools rely on lubricants, or oils, to continue to function properly. This material ensures that parts can move freely without incurring damage. Hydraulics frequently used mineral oil-based fluids to transfer power or heat to elements of various machinery, including excavators. A perhaps more common use of hydraulic oils is the oil that automobiles use for braking (brake fluid). This fluid is one of many to which the ISO viscosity gradient scale can be applied.


Background


The International Standards Organization Viscosity Grade, or ISO VG, is a numerical rating of the viscosity of oils and lubricants as established by several organizations in 1975. The International Standards Organization (ISO), American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), Society for Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE), British Standards Institute (BSI), and Deutsches Institute for Normung (DIN) established the ISO VG to help standardize the industry. Lubricant and oil supplies and manufacturers, as well as manufacturers of machinery that use lubricant, use this ranking in their work as it describes the material's resistance to flow.


Significance


As the viscosity of the oil increases, so does the density of the material, as a higher density results in oil that is less likely to respond to flow or other movement. Thus, an oil or lubricant with a viscosity grade of 220 is thicker and more solid-like than an oil with a VG of 100 or 68. The grade is a literal measurement of the oil's ratio of absolute viscosity in centipoise (a unit of measurement) to the density, also known as centistoke.


Grades


Since its inception in 1975, the organizations have developed 20 viscosity gradients to cover the range of oils and lubricants that are common in hydraulic application. The lowest common ISO grade is 32 and the scale ranges up to 220. The scale also includes grades 46, 68, 100 and 150.


Considerations


Because the viscosity of oil and other liquids is dependent upon temperature, the ISO grade is only applicable at a specific temperature. Base ISO grades are calculated when the oil is at a temperature of 40 degrees C (104 degrees F) and raising or lowering the temperature of the material will alter the oil's resistance to movement such as flow. For example, raising the temperature to 100 degrees Celsius will change the number of centistokes from a grade to just 5.4 centistokes, in comparison to the 32 centistokes at 40-degrees Celsius. At this temperature, the oil is more likely to be effected by flow.

Instructions


1. Remove the current laces from the boots. Hold the zipper against one of the boots, lining the eyelet on the right side with the right eyelet on the boot. Push the shoelace through the zipper eyelet and through the boot eyelet and pull it out.


2. Move to the left side of the boot and push the shoelace through the bottom eyelet on both the zipper and the CG boot. Pull the shoelace through the back of the boot, as you pull on the other side of the lace. Pull up until both sides of the shoelace are even.


3. Hold the shoelace from the right side in your hand and slowly push it through the eyelet above the bottom one. Keep pushing until it comes through the front. It should go through both eyelets: the one on the boot and the one on the zipper.


4. Push the shoelace through the next eyelet, staying on the same side. You want to weave the shoelace in and out each eyelet on the right side of the boot. Keep going until you reach the last eyelet and then tie a knot at the top. Trim off the excess shoelace with the scissors.


5. Return to the left side of the boot and repeat this method. Push the shoelace through the eyelet and pull out the back of the boot. Then push it through the next eyelet and keep weaving until you reach the top of the CG boot. Tie off the lace and cut again.

Grease The Steering Head Bearings On A Harley Davidson Springer Fork

With Springer forks, check the steering head frequently for proper operation.


Harley-Davidson Springer Softail models use an opposed, tapered roller-bearing system to support the forks in the steering head. Springer forks are a predecessor to the common modern hydraulic fork. Modern technology and engineering have improved the Springer forks to make them a viable alternative suspension system, and they lend a nostalgic appearance to the motorcycle. In spite of the benefits of modern engineering, however, Springer forks transmit a considerable amount of shock and stress to the steering head, necessitating a shorter service interval of 2,500 miles, as opposed to the 10,000-mile service interval for hydraulic forks.


Instructions


1. Locate the Zerk fitting -- also referred to as the grease fitting -- on the right side of the steering head.


2. Press and hold the fitting on the end of the grease gun nozzle securely on the Zerk fitting.


3. Pump grease slowly into the steering head until the grease begins to ooze out of the top and bottom of the steering head.


4. Remove the grease gun. Using a clean shop rag, wipe any excess grease from the Zerk fitting as well as the upper and lower ends of the steering head.

Make a Digital TV Antenna Out of a Satellie Dish


The advantage of a digital antenna over those used for analog television is that digital TV broadcasts do not have ghosting or other signal discrepancies. A satellite dish can be adapted into a digital TV antenna in order to receive television broadcasts. A few tools commonly found around the house will be needed, as will adult supervision if you are underage, due to the use of power tools and a soldering iron.


Instructions


1. Cut off one end from a coaxial cable spool using a pair of scissors. Cut off a 10-inch length from the cut end with the scissors.


2. Make a slit in the outer insulation from one end of the 10-inch length of coaxial cable to the other end with the blade of a utility knife. Pull off the outer insulation with your fingers. Make a slit in the inner insulation from one end to the other. Pull the inner insulation off with your fingers. Place the cut length of coaxial cable on a table. Repeat this entire process to make an additional two lengths of 10-inch coaxial cable that no longer have insulation on them.


3. Cut off a five-foot length from the end of the coaxial cable spool. Remove the insulation from the five foot length in the same manner as was done with the 10-inch lengths.


4. Place the PVC pipe horizontally on a table. Insert one end of the five-foot length of coaxial cable into the hole on the left side of the PVC pipe. Reach into the hole on the right side of the PVC pipe and grab the end of the coaxial cable. Pull the coaxial cable through the PVC pipe until about an inch is visible out of the right side.


5. Place a sheet of newspaper on the table. Place a PVC cap face down on the newspaper. Drill a hole through the center of the PVC cap with a portable drill. Smooth out the inside of the hole with the drill.


6. Place bonding glue around the rim of the right side of the PVC pipe. Push the coaxial cable that is coming out of the right side of the PVC pipe through the hole in the PVC cap. Place the PVC cap onto the right side of the PVC pipe. Hold the PVC cap against the right side of the PVC pipe for a minute. Let the bonding glue set for at least a half an hour.


7. Heat up the soldering iron for 10 minutes. Solder an end of one of the 10-inch lengths of coaxial cable to the top end of the coaxial cable that is coming out of the PVC cap. Let the solder cool for two minutes.


8. Rotate the PVC pipe a quarter turn. Solder an end of another of the 10-inch lengths of coaxial cable to the top end of the coaxial cable that is coming out of the PVC cap. Let the solder cool for two minutes.


9. Rotate the PVC pipe a quarter turn. Repeat the procedure to solder the last 10 inch length of coaxial cable to the coaxial cable coming out of the PVC cap. Let the solder cool for two minutes.


10. Stand the PVC pipe on the table with the PVC cap facing up. Measure 4 inches up from the PVC pipe on each of the 10-inch lengths of coaxial cable. Bend each of the three 10-inch lengths of coaxial cable down at a 45 degree angle in relation to the PVC pipe at the 4-inch mark using the jaws of the needle-nosed pliers.


11. Make a 10-inch slit in the outer insulation at the end of the coaxial cable spool using the blade of the utility knife. Pull the outer insulation off of the 10-inch slit with your fingers. Scrape 4 inches of the inner insulation from the end of the coaxial cable using the blade of the utility knife to reveal the inner wire.


12. Place the dish face down on the newspaper. Drill a hole though the center of the dish with the portable drill. Turn the dish over. Push the coaxial cable coming out of the hole in the PVC pipe through the hole in the dish. Place the PVC pipe against the dish. Hot glue the PVC pipe to the dish. Let the hot glue set for 10 minutes. Reapply the hot glue. Let the hot glue set for 10 minutes again.


13. Solder the end of the coaxial cable coming out of the hole in the dish to the inner wire at the end of the coaxial cable spool. Let the solder cool for a minute. Wrap a strip of electrical tape around the two wires where they meet. Solder the outer insulation of the coaxial cable to the back of the dish. Let the solder cool for two minutes.


14. Stand your digital antenna against the side of a building or on a lawn chair. Aim the front of your digital antenna towards the broadcast towers that are providing the free digital television signals. Trail the coaxial cable spool into the house and over to your digital television. Unwrap the rest of the coaxial cable from the spool. Screw the coaxial connector at the end of the coaxial cable onto the coaxial connection on the back of the television set.

Port & Polish Shovelheads

Harley engines, like Captain America's "Panhead," are named for the shape of their rocker boxes.


Since 1936, Harley-Davidson V-Twin engines have been named for the shape of the chrome rocker boxes that enclose their cylinder heads. "Knuckleheads" were replaced by "Panheads" and then by "Shovelheads" in 1966. The "Shovelhead" produced significantly more horsepower with significantly less engine displacement than current models. However, Harley was limited by government regulations as to how much power it could give to the engines and production was eventually halted in 1984. The heads were sand cast iron. A slightly smaller version was called the "Ironhead." And, a standard way to make these engines even more powerful was to polish the interior of the heads and the intake and exhaust ports.


Instructions


1. Remove the front and rear heads from the engine. Strip the heads of any movable parts including valves and seals.


2. Scrape the bottom of the heads with a gasket scraper and soak the heads in a 5-gallon metal bucket containing any degreasing solvent in a well-ventilated room for 6 hours.


3. Dry the heads with compressed air. Paint a 1/4-inch-wide line around the outside of the bottom of each head with black touch-up paint. Do not attempt to polish any part of either head that is not within that painted line.


4. Attach an abrasive roll to the shank of a rotary grinder according to the instructions for your grinder. Rolls usually attach to the grinder shank with a single, flat head screw. Work on one head at a time.


5. Lay one cylinder head bottom side down on a flat surface. Slowly grind the 90-degree edges of the intake and exhaust ports until those edges are no longer sharp to the touch, using a rotary grinder and abrasive roll.


6. Smooth the cast surfaces inside each port until those surfaces are shiny and smooth. Turn the head over.


7. Smooth the cast surface inside the hemispherical combustion chamber the same way you smoothed the interior of the intake and exhaust ports. Change abrasive rolls frequently. Do not attempt to physically change the shape of the combustion chamber. Do not polish within 1/2 inch of the valve seats, which are the clearly visible, machined area around the ports inside the head.


8. Install a polishing wheel on the rotary grinder shank using the same technique you used to install an abrasive roll. Polish the interior of the intake and exhaust ports and the interior of the combustion chamber using a rotary grinder, polishing wheel and polishing compound.


9. Repeat these procedures to port and polish the second head. Remove the touch-up paint from both heads with acetone and a shop rag.


10. Wipe all surfaces of both heads with new motor oil and shop rags to remove metal and polishing residue. Leave a thin coat of oil on the cast iron heads to prevent rusting until just before reassembly of the engine top end.


11. Wipe all surfaces on both heads with degreasing solvent and shop rags immediately before engine reassembly.

Set The Timing On A Ford F150

For the Ford F-150 to run efficiently the timing needs to be checked routinely during a tune-up. This will ensure the best performance and gas mileage for the F-150. The procedure to check timing for six-cylinder and V-8 engines is basically the same but there are two slight differences. The six-cylinder has its timing markers on the driver's side of the engine and the V-8 on the passenger's side. Adjusting the timing is important to the maintenance of the F-150 and adds a few minutes to the tune-up.


Instructions


1. Park the F-150 on a level, paved surface and set the parking brake.


2. Find the timing marker on the timing cover. On six-cylinder engines its on the driver's side next to the crankshaft pulley and has numbers on it reading "12-8-4-0." This stands for degrees before top-dead-center. The marker on V-8 engines is on the driver's side and is just a triangle shaped pointer. The numbers are on the harmonic balancer. Spray some parts cleaner on a shop rag and clean the markers.


3. Find the timing references on the crankshaft. Six-cylinder's have a little notch in the crankshaft pulley. V-8's have numbers stamped in the harmonic balancer behind the pulley. The V-8 numbers read "Before 10-8-6-4-2-0-2-4 After." The "Before" numbers are before top-dead-center, the "After" numbers are after top-dead-center. The setting will be in the "Before" area. Barely click the starter to bring the notch or numbers into view. When the numbers or notch is visible, clean with parts cleaner and shop rag. Dab a little white paint (any kind will do) on the notch or the numbers to increase visibility.


4. Loosen the distributor hold down bolt with a wrench just enough so that it can only turn the distributor with some effort. Remove the vacuum advance hose from the vacuum advance on the distributor and plug it with a small Phillips screwdriver.


5. Clip the red wire on the timing light to the positive battery terminal and the black one to the negative terminal. The pickup lead clips over the number one spark plug wire which is the first wire at the front of the engine on six-cylinders and the first on on the passenger side for V-8s. Carefully position the light's wires to avoid getting caught in the fan or pulleys.


6. Start the engine and aim the light at the timing marks. The timing light will flash every time the number one spark plug fires, making the rotating mark on the crankshaft appear to be stationary. If the the distributor is turned the mark will move. Adjust the distributor until the proper reference number is obtained. These numbers vary from engine to engine. The timing setting should be printed on the emissions sticker near the radiator.


7. Set the timing, turn off the engine, remove the timing light, tighten the distributor bolt and hook up the vacuum advance hose.

Stop My Computer From Going Into Sleep Mode

Sleep mode--a setting that keeps a computer running at low power--is useful for people who like to leave their computers always on and ready for use but want to save energy or, in the case of laptops, battery life. Those users who mind their computers going to sleep in the first place, however, can change operating system settings to turn off sleep mode.


Instructions


Windows XP


1. Right-click the desktop, and select "Properties."


2. Click the "Screen Saver" tab, and click the "Power" button near the bottom of the dialog box.


3. Change the option next to "System Standby" to "Never" for either "Plugged in" or "Running on batteries" or both if that is what you want. Click "Apply," "OK" and "OK" once again to close the Display Properties dialog box.


Windows Vista


4. Click the "Start" menu button, and then click "Control Panel."


5. Click "System and Maintenance," and then select "Power Options."


6. Select "High Performance" to disable sleep mode for the computer. The monitor will still go into sleep mode unless you click "Change Plan Settings" and disable all sleep options.


Windows 7


7. Click "Start," and then select "Control Panel."


8. Double-click "Power Options."


9. Select "High Performance" under "Additional Plans," and then click "Change Plan Settings." Change all of the options to say "Never."


Mac OS X 10.7


10. Click the "Apple" menu, and select "System Preferences."


11. Click "Energy Saver."


12. Move the slider for computer sleep to "Never." Do the same with the display slider if you do not want the display to sleep either.

Build Flame Kits For Your Exhaust

Adding a flame thrower kit to the exhaust of your classic cruiser is an ideal way to grab attention. Kits can be purchased online, but you can do it yourself in the driveway or garage without too much hassle. These kits only work with older vehicles with carburetors and no catalytic converters. Keep in mind, throwing flames out of the exhaust is illegal in many places. Check local ordinances before installing the system.


Instructions


1. Drill a hole in the exhaust tubing. Measure in from the tip of the exhaust (back of the car) about one half inch. Drill a hole big enough to fit a spark plug. Depending on what plug you use, this hole can vary. It is recommended to get the spark plug first. Also recommended is to use a titanium-nitride-coated drill bit, which can be found at any hardware store. These bits are specifically meant for metal applications. If the vehicle has dual exhausts, and you plan on throwing flames from both sides, repeat this step for the other exhaust pipe, as well. Install the plug by screwing or tack welding it in.


2. Install a toggle switch in the passenger compartment where it can be reached from the driver's seat. Ground the negative (-) side of the toggle switch to the chassis of the vehicle and run the positive (+) side to the battery or a hot wire in the fuse block. The extra terminal will be used to wire to an ignition coil, so run that wire toward the back of the vehicle.


3. Install an ignition coil (you can find one at the junkyard for little to no cost) near the spark plug. Recommended is to put it in the trunk if the vehicle is a car or the bed of a pickup. Wire the positive (+) side of the coil to the extra terminal of the toggle switch, and the negative to the chassis. Mount the coil using a coil bracket, which can also be found in any junkyard.


4. Connect a spark plug wire from the coil to the spark plug. This will enable the spark plug wire to actually spark. Since spark plugs do not work off of 12 volts like the rest of the car, it must be connected to the coil.


5. Apply the choke to the carburetor slightly. Rev the engine with the toggle switch on. This will overload the engine with fuel and send raw gas fumes down the exhaust pipe, where the spark plug will ignite them and create a flame.

The Harley Davidson Fat Boy is a line of cruiser-style motorcycles that continues to be offered today. Characteristically, they all feature a low seat height, low riding height and polished metal and chrome exterior trim. 5. Go to your local electronics store and purchase your in-dash satellite radio. Subscribe to either XM or Sirius when you make your purchase.

Clean Squeaky Brakes On A Golf Cart

Expose your golf cart's wheel assembly to address squeaky brakes.


Squeaky brakes on a golf cart aren't conducive to maintaining proper golf course etiquette. After all, no golfer wants wants his backswing interrupted by a loud screeching sound. Prevent errant tee shots and offline putts by checking and lubricating the brakes on your course's carts regularly to ensure they're up to par. Routine checkups on not just the brakes, but the other parts of your carts like the batteries and wheels should be performed every three months to assure both riders' and golfers' safety.


Instructions


1. Park your golf cart on a level surface such as an empty parking lot or garage. Place bricks or wheel blocks in front of and behind the cart's front tires to prevent the cart from accidentally rolling away.


2. Place a jack beneath the cart and raise the cart until the rear wheels are off of the ground. Use a socket wrench to remove the bolts holding the wheels onto the cart. Take the wheels off the cart and set them aside.


3. Remove the cotter key and pin from the brake arm on the backside of each rear wheel assembly. You may need needle-nose pliers to remove the cotter key and pin. Remove any rubber shoes covering the bolt that connects the wheel assembly to the cart. Expose the wheel assembly unit.


4. Take careful note of how the wheel unit is assembled, taking a picture if necessary or if you are unfamiliar with brake maintenance and repair so you reassemble the wheel unit exactly the way it was originally.


5. Remove the springs and shoes located in the center of the wheel on the front and back of the brake shoes. Remove the two wedges and clean them, freeing them of debris and lubricating them with WD-40 or another metal lubricant.


6. Wipe down the rest of the wheel assembly with a damp cloth, being careful to remove all built-up grime and debris. Spray the rest of the wheel unit with WD-40, giving special attention to moving parts. Allow the wheel to dry and perform these steps on the other wheel. Come back to the first wheel and relubricate all parts with noticeable wear. Repeat for the other wheel.


7. Reassemble both wheels and reattach them to the cart. Tighten the bolts with a socket wrench and use the jack to lower the cart back to the ground. Remove the wheel blocks and test the cart's performance breaking at different speeds in the vacant lot to ensure it's working properly, and quietly, before returning it for use on the course.

Buy A Used Motorcycle

Buying a used motorcycle is easier than buying a car in some ways but is a process that should be approached more carefully, due to the greater inherent risk that you take by simply riding a motorcycle.


Instructions


1. Be aware, from the beginning, that you may need to be buying replacement parts at different stages over the first few months after buying your motorcycle. Used bikes have taken different degrees of wear and tear, depending on how carefully previous riders have treated the machine. Check eBay and various classified ads to see what pieces of your potential bike sell for.


2. Check wheels and tires just as you would for a car. Look for cracks and holes, especially with the tire inflated to proper pressure. Easier to check on a motorcycle is the wheel-balancing. Prop the bike on its stand and spin the wheel. Make sure that the wheel doesn't wobble from side to side.


3. Look for fluid leaks all around the engine. Again, this is easier to do on most motorcycles because you can see the engine from all sides. Ask the owner about any leakage that you spot and be sure that any concerns you have are answered satisfactorily.


4. Pull back on the throttle and let it go. If it snaps back into place quickly and cleanly, then it is in good shape. If it's sluggish in its return, then there is a problem to be looked into.


5. Press the front brake and, with the front wheel off the ground, let the brake go and spin the wheel. See how the wheel turns; make sure that the brake does let go of the wheel and that you have no stickiness.


6. Examine the front fork very carefully. As this part of the motorcycle provides you with primary suspension, balance and steering control, it is imperative that there are no cracks or bends in the metal. Any such deficiency causes you severe problems on the road at cruising speeds.

Contemporary Issues In Management Accounting

Information Systems

The corporate scandals that plagued the period of 2000 to 2010 have forever altered the nature of managerial accounting. This field has been hit hard, since management accountants are in charge of the internal financial structure of the organization. Misleading the shareholders almost always requires the cooperation of management accountants. Schemes, like deflating the costs of creating a new product desired by management, overstating inventory stores, understating managerial salaries, inflating managerial accomplishments and other shady behaviors, have now come under intense scrutiny from the general public, shareholders and the government. Ethical issues are central to today's operations accounting due to its vulnerability to fraud.


Total Quality Issues


As integrated information systems continue to link financial and operations accounting, the basic issues of "Total Quality Management" are linking them even more. The concept of "Total Quality Management" is precisely to integrate the external and internal ideas of the firm. The concept is to eliminate these distinctions so as to create a single, streamlined and integrated accounting system. It is not as if managerial accounting will no longer have its own specific areas of expertise, but rather that it must work closely with financial accounting in financing projects and evaluating internal practices.

Upgrade Drivers For A Video Card

Changes to your operating system or new software may cause conflicts with your video card or video card driver. If the manufacturer of your video card has created a new driver, you may solve the problem by installing it. You might also upgrade the driver to take advantage of a new video format.


Instructions


Finding out What Video Card You Have


1. Right-click on My Computer.


2. Select Properties.


3. Click on the Device Manager tab.


4. Click on the plus sign to the left of "Display adapters." The name of the driver appears. Make a note of it.


Finding and Downloading a Newer Driver


5. Go directly to the Web site of your driver's manufacturer.


6. Click on the link for your video card, brand of video card or brand of video chip (if you don't have a separate video card).


7. Follow instructions to download the driver.


8. Save the file on your computer's desktop.


Installing the New Driver


9. Find the existing driver in the Device Manager, as before. Right-click on it and select Remove.


10. Double-click on the icon for the downloaded file.


11. Follow installation instructions.


12. Restart the computer.

AMA Motocross Racing Rules


The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is the world's largest sanctioning body for the sport of motorcycle competition. Since 1924, the AMA has sanctioned motorsports competitions and motorcycle recreational events, as well as advocated for motorcyclists' interests in all levels of government. AMA-sanctioned motocross racing has a comprehensive and definitive set of rules and guidelines, which are reviewed and updated on an annual basis. General Guidelines


All riders in AMA-sanctioned competition are required to be AMA competition members as well as a member of their recognized district organization; associate members may not participate in AMA-sanctioned off-road competition. If an AMA district membership isn't required in a rider's home district when competing outside their home district is not required to purchase another district's membership unless the rider wants their points kept and eligible for year-end awards in that district.


Minimum age for amateur riders is 12. In all off-road events, a rider must be 14 years or older to ride motorcycles above 250cc. Rider's age is determined as of event date, except in youth competition.


No rider under legal age of majority in the state in which meet takes place may compete without written consent of their parents or legal guardians present at the meet. An authorized adult can only act on behalf of the minor rider with a notarized statement indicating that the parents or legal guardian have consented for the authorized adult to be responsible for the minor rider during the meet, and must remain present at the meet.


Standard meets are open to all qualified AMA members, regardless of gender.


Only Class A riders (highest classification) may compete for cash prizes. Rider classification is determined by district or by meet referee in unrecognized districts.


All race personnel, officials, riders, mechanics and/or anyone associated with the riders and photographers are prohibited from consuming or being under the influence of intoxicants or drugs.


Any riders and/or family or pit crew directing foul language to any officials or promoters are subject to disqualification for the entire meet. Riders are responsible for the actions of their family and pit crew and risk disqualification for any negative behavior and actions.


- All riders and personnel must rely on their own judgment in terms of assessing safety and assume all risks of participating in competition in any manner.


- Pro motocross or Supercross riders, or any riders with a professional racing license from another country are eligible to compete in amateur competition and are eligible for cash awards from the event, but not eligible for district points. Pro riders are not eligible for factory contingency unless otherwise stated in the contingency program guidelines or rules. Pro riders must wait one full year after their pro license expires to be eligible for Amateur National competition or year-end district awards. To ride in a promoter offered Pro class, riders must have a Pro license.


- All riders and motorcycles participating in any AMA Amateur sanctioned meet will comply with the Amateur Rule Book.


Riders and Classifications


Riders are responsible to enter only classes in which they are eligible.


The AMA classifies riders on the basis of participation and achievement unless otherwise provided by AMA rules.


- Classification designations are : Class A (highest classification), Class B and Class C. Additional entry-level classifications may be established at meets based on amount of rider participation and other circumstances.


Riders go up in classification based on their RPV (rider performance value).


Participating or advancing in a higher class in any AMA or non-AMA activity results in permanent advancement to that higher class in all like AMA-sanctioned competition.


A rider can decide to advance at any time to a higher rider class but may not return to a lower rider class without AMA approval and can only return to a lower class once. Riders can appeal their classification once to the AMA.


Riders returned to a lower class are only those whom officials deem completely non-competitive in the class they are leaving and will not dominate the class to which they are returning.


Failure to comply can result in disciplinary action or suspension.


Any Class B riders aged 12-15 will not be forced into Class A, regardless of how many races or points they have. Riders in this age group may advance based on their own ability.


A rider may not use more than one machine in any class, under penalty of disqualification. More than one contestant may ride the same motorcycle so long as the riders are entered in different classes.


Entries


All entry forms must be completed in ink. Promoters may refuse rider entry if rider has not made arrangements to pay medical or ambulance bills incurred as result of injuries at a previous meet sponsored by that promoter.


Only one engine number can appear on an entry blank.


- Promoters can establish closing dates, and may accept post entries with higher fees; conditions must be clearly listed in all promotions.


- Entrants may be removed for breaking rules of conduct, but promoters cannot issue continuing suspensions of AMA membership cards.


- If youth and amateur events are being run on the same date at the same location, youth entrants aren't allowed to enter more than three classes for the entire day.


- Youth or amateur riders can use the same motorcycle in more than one class the same day as long as the machine and rider meet the class requirements.


- Riders must start the race to be considered a participant.


- To compete in a youth meet, an AMA member must be minimum age of 7 (except in the 0-50cc class) and no older than 16. Proof of age can be requested.


- Parents, legal guardians or authorized adults must remain present at all times during youth AMA rider meet. Youth riders may only compete if parent, legal guardian or authorized adult signs below rider's signature on entry form; in case of authorized adult, a notarized authorization from youth rider's parents or legal guardians must be kept on file with the rider's release form.


- The youth rider must have the ability to safely ride and maintain control of their machine at all times. Personnel have the authority to disqualify youth riders that they deem unable to safely control their machine. In Motocross only, if a rider's physical stature does not allow them to reach the ground with both feet, blocks may be used but must immediately be removed after the race start.


- A youth rider's age as of January 1st determines their age for the year. Youth riders may move to the next higher age class (within the youth division only) if they are eligible to do so during the year, but once they move to a higher age class in AMA/non-AMA competition, they are unable to move back to the lower age class. Points earned in a lower age class do not transfer to a higher age class; riders are requested to determine which age class they will ride in for the points season/year.


- Youth entrants are eligible to run a maximum of three classes for the day, at any events with youth and amateur races running same day and location.


- Youth racers may use the same machine in both youth and amateur events on the same day, as long as it meets the engine displacement of the entered class. Proper numbers must be displayed on the machine when district numbering requirements designate.


- Youth riders are eligible to receive district points in youth classes.


- All participants are solely responsible for the condition of their vehicles and their competence to ride them.


Machine Specifications - Stock


Stock class machines must be approved by AMA. For a stock machine to be approved, the manufacturer must apply to AMA, register the machine specs, provide photos and prove that 100 identical, completed machines of the same model are available for sale to the general public thoughout all six AMA regions. The approval procedure for the following year opens Aug. 15 and must be completed no later than March 15 the following year. A list of currently approved machine models is available at www.amaracing.com.


- Stock class machines must not change or modify the following: air box, frame, rim size, carburetor (jet changes allowed), electronics, stroke, swing arm, exhaust system, wheel hubs and internal engine components. Cylinder re-plating is allowed but must retain the bore of the original manufacturer. Carb jetting changes are allowed. Clutch plates, piston rings and pistons can be aftermarket items, as long as the shape, design and material of the OEM parts are retained. No high-compression pistons. All other internal engine components must be OEM stock. The existing frame can be fortified by additional material (such as welding) but the frame geometry must not be changed. OEM front/rear suspension can only have internal modifications. Shock linkage and suspension spring rates can be changed to any commercially available part. Any other items not listed may be changed or modified.


- For stock classes with oil-injection systems, only oil may be put in the reservoir. Pre-mix gas is not allowed in system.


- First violation of stock class rules results in event disqualification. A second violation results in event disqualification and a one-year AMA competition suspension. If a violation is deemed to be cosmetic and offer no performance advantage, or deems no willful misconduct, a fine or warning can be issued, rather than a disqualification.


Machine Specifications - Modifieds


All classes are considered modified unless otherwise indicated. For modified machines: all equipment used in sanctioned competition must meet AMA modified standards. It is the rider's responsibility to ensure components and materials perform in competition safely.


Actual engine displacement must be stamped on the cylinder or engine case and may not exceed the class limit. Frames cannot be changed once a rider has qualified, although engines may be changed. Superchargers are not allowed. Kill switches/ignition cut-offs are a requirement, and all motorcycles must be fitted with a self-closing throttle.


All motorcycles must use petroleum-based gasoline (ASTM D4814); all gas must be stored in approved containers.


Transmission gearbox is limited to the approved motorcycle's number of speeds -- machines originally equipped with fewer than six speeds may be increased to a maximum of six. All approved bikes must have the transmission cataloged and sold by the original manufacturer.


Clutch pedals must be rubber-covered; specialty fabricated clutch levers and pedals may be used.


Special sprockets can be used so long as they function safely. Extra sprockets cannot be mounted to the rear wheel.


Starting systems, including kick lever, pedal, starter shaft and starter crank gear, can be removed. Kick pedals must fold in.


There are no gearing limitations.


Brakes must be fully functioning. Compression releases can be installed in addition to, but not in place of, brakes or braking devices. Bikes must have both front and rear functioning brakes. Special pedals must be rubber-covered. Brake ventilation is permitted; brakes that operate via tire friction or wheel rim friction are not allowed.


Aluminum wheel axles are not allowed at any AMA competitions.


No titanium frames are permitted. Safety stands and bars must be removed. Once qualified for a meet, frames cannot be replaced.


Footrests must fold back and have a non-skid surface.


Handlebars must be made of aluminum, steel, titanium or other AMA-approved material. Repaired, cracked or broken handlebars are not allowed; handlebar mounts may be altered. Control levers must have ½-inch minimum ball ends.


Forks must be proportional and adequate to the bike they are installed on. Fender brackets may be removed, and steering dampeners may be fitted in all competition types.


Gas tank capacity must be between 5-24 liters (1.32-6.34 gallons) and in good operating order. Seat tanks are prohibited. Vent lines must be equipped with a device to prevent gas from leaking. Gas tank size must stay the same throughout the entire meet, and tanks may not be swapped out during pit stops in place of adding fuel to the regular tank.


Recapped or retreaded tires are prohibited. Rubber studs, metal studs or other foreign materials are prohibited, as are paddle tires. No liquid can be used as a primary tire filler.


Front and rear portion of the rear fender may be removed, and special fenders are allowed as long as they are securely mounted. Streamlined parts, shells or housings are not allowed. Lights, license plates, mirrors, glass, brackets or other equipment which could pose a hazard to other racers are not permitted.


Mufflers/silencers should do not exceed the maximum db required by the state or 99db, whichever is less, measured per MIC manual SAE J1287. Applicable sound limits may not be exceeded at any time during an event; testing by promoter is required, and can be conducted at any time. Machines not in compliance may be penalized. Spark arresters must be installed throughout the event.


Three number plates are required and must be mounted securely. Only rider number and letter may appear on plates, and they must be legible, 5-inch-high, standard block letters that are professional appearance. Outlining or shading is not permitted. A Class: white plate, black numbers. B Class: yellow plate, black numbers. C Class: black plate, white numbers. Riders are encouraged to put their number on the back of their jersey or chest protector.


Riders cannot communicate via electronic communication devices to their pits during an event.


Machines that pass pre-event inspection are subject to further inspections at any time during the program. Any rider refusing to allow their machine to be inspected is automatically disqualified.


Rider Equipment Specifications


Riders are responsible for the selection of their helmet and apparel for durability, safety and protection. Riders must wear a helmet at all times when riding on a track or course. Helmets must be full-face or full-coverage helmets, and must utilize a shatterproof face shield or goggles. Helmets must conform to one of the following recognized standards, with a label certifying its compliance: USA Snell M2005, M2010 or DOT FMXSS-218; Europe: Regulation ECE 22-04, ECE 2205-P; UK: BSI 6658 Type A; Japan: JIS-T-8133-2. It is recommended that all helmets used in competition be equipped with an emergency helmet removal device or system, commercially manufactured. It is also recommended that competitors display their name, drug allergies, blood type and pertinent medical information on the base of their helmet.


Protective pants, long-sleeved jerseys and protective boots of at least 8 inches in height must be worn in all competition. Rider number must appear on the back of the rider jersey or vest in event of being used as means of rider identification. Number must be of contrasting color to jersey color and minimum 8 inches in height. other safety gear is encouraged at the rider's discretion.
